If you forget your mask...

And are going somewhere indoors, like the shops or a play centre, are you still running back to the house to get it or not?

Just curious what people tend to be doing.

It feels like a whole new mask etiquette is happening now!

Yes. I'm too embarrassed to go in without one. I accidentally forgot to put it back on after I had tried on some clothes the other day. I was mortified. Only realised when I was looking down at some kids clothes and realised I could see them far too easily.
I can't wait until they do away with them here I fucking hate it!

LawnFever · 03/09/2021 10:25

No, I’m on a train right now, it’s fairly busy and virtually nobody is wearing a mask, I think everyone has given up

SlipperyLizard · 03/09/2021 10:26

Mask wearing has really dropped around me. At first, most people still wore them in shops. Now I’d say it is more 50/50, presumably partly as people no longer go back to get a mask if they forget one, and then not having one on your person at all times stops being a habit.

sunshineandshowers21 · 03/09/2021 10:27

i don’t wear a mask, and when i was in the town centre yesterday i’d say 90% of people aren’t either. even on the bus there was only two out of about twenty passengers wearing one. very few people wearing them at soft play last week either.

seaandsandcastles · 03/09/2021 10:27

I don’t even wear a mask anymore and haven’t since the law changed 🤷‍♀️

NannyR · 03/09/2021 10:27

I still wear one, although if I forgot it for a quick shop I wouldn't be bothered about rushing back for it. I'm definitely in the minority of people still wearing masks now though in this area, hardly anyone wears them in the supermarket here.

AlrightThereSkippy · 03/09/2021 10:27

I feel the same really. I forgot to have one on today and only realised when I left that I didn't have it on! Really embarrassed now, as it was in my pocket. But hardly anyone else had one on either I didn't really notice until I knew I could breathe and talk normally!

Feeling like a massive dickhead now. Not because I'm overly worried for myself, but I want to be aware other people might not be comfortable.

In Scotland, I don’t know what the law is, but shops still have a sign up saying ‘wear a mask’ and most people still are. I do and would feel like a knob without.

AlrightThereSkippy · 03/09/2021 10:28

Sorry X posted with lots of people. Was responding to jack.

I agree, it has stopped being a habit, which is probably why I forgot it today. I'm embarrassed now though.

I've given up with them now.

PleasantBirthday · 03/09/2021 10:29

I forgot the other week, I was mortified. I had a packet of tissues in my bag and used one of them instead. I rarely see anyone around here without a mask.

AllTheSingleLadiess · 03/09/2021 10:29

Depends on the time of day and how busy it is.
I'd wear a mask in a supermarket on Xmas Eve (or Saturday afternoon which is another super busy time) but I wouldn't wear one on a weekday at 10am when social distancing is super easy.

GintyMcGinty · 03/09/2021 10:29

Yes - I'm in Scotland. They are still legally required here unless exempt and you would still get dirty looks if you didn't wear one.

Same here. Still wear it and get in a tiz if I forget itBlush

I still feel like it's the right thing to do, so I'd go back. A couple of times recently when we've been out walking (have countryside very close) we've found ourselves wanting something to eat or drink and I haven't had a mask, so I've put my cardigan over my face while I have a quick look, or walk through to pub garden.

Xenia · 03/09/2021 10:34

I wear it in Tesco as the sign at the door has you must but not Waitrose as the sign says it is voluntary. I wear it on the tube as the rules are you must. I never forget it as I have 2 in my handbag so it will always be there. If I did forget it and it was the law to wear it I would take off my cardigan and tie that round my face.

RoseMartha · 03/09/2021 10:34

I still wear one but if i had forgotten it when doing a quick shop would go without. Otherwise would pop into somewhere and buy one. I usually make sure to pick one up as I grab my keys before leaving. Have a small basket of reusable and disposable there.

When i was in my local town shopping centre yesterday about 50-60% were wearing them. Which has gone down in last few weeks as was 80-90 just after rule was lifted.

What do you feel that actually achieves?! A cardigan is hardly going to stop covid in its tracks.
SmidgenofaPigeon · 03/09/2021 10:36

No way.

I still keep one on me for the tube or bus, but I only put that on when socially distancing gets tricky. But I’m on maternity at the moment and only really travelling at quiet times.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 03/09/2021 10:37

@ifonly4

That is….it would just make me cringe for you. I know someone who puts a cardigan over their face probably doesn’t care, but I’d think you were bonkers.

That would make absolutely no difference at all and simply look ridiculous.

I only wear masks in medical settings now. So if I wasn't going to one of those then I simply wouldn't bother.

Brokenrecord3006 · 03/09/2021 10:44

No, I had one mask and god knows where it's gone but I've not worn it since we didn't have to. I'd say mask wearing is about 50/50 now and I never feel awkward without it.

FirstCoffee · 03/09/2021 10:46

I still do. I know that many people aren’t worried about catching covid but I still am so am happy to take small measures even if it only slightly reduces my chances.

AlrightThereSkippy · 03/09/2021 10:46

I feel bad though. It probably didn't make an enormous difference as most people didn't have masks on. But I've guilt-purchased some extra washable masks to put by my keys so I don't forget and also got some disposable ones, which I swore I never would due to hating seeing them all over the countryside looking like medical waste.

Even if it doesn't make a difference, at least people who are nervous will be a bit more comfortable.

But I have to admit being able to breathe and talk and being understood, (I have a funny accent so it's difficult enough even without the mask), was nice.

This happened to me yesterday. Went to the supermarket on my way home, no mask.

I'll admit I'm not convinced about masks, especially the way most people use them, but I've worn them religiously to help people around me feel more comfortable.

This time though, I decided to be extra careful about keeping my distance and get in and out as quickly as possible. The first time I've been in a shop without a mask since they were first recommended.

The supermarket wasn't particularly busy, but I saw only 2 other customers wearing a mask. This is a marked difference from last week when the vast majority were.

Here at least, I think mask wearing is over. It was the same on the train this weekend (not London where it's still compulsory). No masks at all, whereas the previous weekend the vast majority were still wearing them.
