And are going somewhere indoors, like the shops or a play centre, are you still running back to the house to get it or not?

Just curious what people tend to be doing.

It feels like a whole new mask etiquette is happening now!

NotMyCat · 03/09/2021 11:13

Yep but I'm wearing FFP ones and don't go anywhere inside without one

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/09/2021 11:13

Though I guess they’re akin to sneezing into a hanky or not. They’ll catch bigger droplets 🤷‍♀️

SmidgenofaPigeon · 03/09/2021 11:14

All cotton masks do is make other people feel better. That is it.

32inchtv · 03/09/2021 11:16

No I don’t rush back. I’ve been surprised to find I haven’t needed it

There was an occasion I needed to go to the pharmacy and expected to need to knock on the door and ask for them to provide me a disposable mask for my visit but I was fine without

nordica · 03/09/2021 11:16

@UpstreamSwimmer

The evidence for wearing masks just isn't there. In not a single country can you track the pandemic's wax and wane with the mask mandate. Why wear a mask when it clearly doesn't do anything?
There's a lot of ground between tracking the pandemic's wax and wave due to masks alone, and thinking they don't do anything.

Any mask or face covering will stop or at least reduce the amount of droplets that are expelled when speaking, coughing, sneezing and so on. Same reason we've always been taught to use a tissue or our elbow when sneezing or coughing.

A thin cloth mask won't stop you catching or spreading the virus if you're in an enclosed space for a period of time and one of you is infected, but it can reduce viral load and there is research that shows masks do work but best if everyone in any given setting wears them.

If you want protection for yourself, then go for an FFP2 grade mask as that will also filter the air you breathe in.

EstuaryBird · 03/09/2021 11:17

I still wear one and will continue to do so in supermarkets and trains….this is mostly because it means that I don’t have to engage with people.

I don’t care if people wear them or not but I do miss social distancing, except if I’m at a gig when masks and distancing don’t matter. Yes, I am very 2 faced ☹️

Beautiful3 · 03/09/2021 11:28

I stopped wearing one 2 days after it was no longer compulsory.

LindaEllen · 03/09/2021 11:32

I haven't worn one since it became personal choice, apart from in the vaccination centre where they were enforcing them. Nowhere else seems to be enforcing them. I test regularly and take hygiene precautions. Nobody is catching anything from me.

midsomermurderess · 03/09/2021 11:33

I do or either buy one or sometimes shops can give you one. I'm in Scotland too so it's still mandatory. It also feels rather anti-social not to wear one.

zafferana · 03/09/2021 11:34

I only wear a mask now if required to, for instance at the hair salon or on public transport. In shops? Nope! Masks only block 5-10% of infections and don't protect the wearer. I do, however, socially distance from anyone not in my household. I have no wish to get close to strangers and find not wearing a mask makes them keep their distance from me too!

CarlaH · 03/09/2021 11:38

Not sure how hygiene precautions work with an airborne virus and a test is only as good as the moment when you take it.

You cannot possibly say that nobody will catch anything from you.

Siennabear · 03/09/2021 11:46

No I don’t. It didn’t stop cases going up when it was in force. A lot of people have become very anxious and frightened to live their lives, even though they are young and healthy normally.

Some of the thinking is absolutely bizarre. A good friend of mine who is normally intelligent said to me the choice was wear a mask or die. I have to say I was quite shocked. Her sister on the other hand doesn’t believe any of it so 2 extremes.

The comments about wearing a cardigan tied to your face, what can I say? the world has gone mad. If you’re vaccinated why the fear?

Banani · 03/09/2021 11:56

I would go back for my mask. Still wearing one and the vast majority of people on the bus and in shops locally still are.
The ‘masks don’t make a difference’ theory isn’t as clear cut as some above would have us believe, but regardless if it makes others feel safe then it’s no big deal to me. The vast majority of those in transport and retail seem to be saying they’d prefer customers continued to wear them so it feels respectful to continue to do so for the time being.

SwedishEdith · 03/09/2021 12:08

Cotton masks do provide some protection for other people - how couldn't they?

inigomontoyahwillcox · 03/09/2021 12:13

yes I do

garlicandsapphires · 03/09/2021 12:15

I recently forgot my mask, didn’t go back to get it, went shopping and felt a bit weird and guilty, but haven’t bothered with a mask since.

That's the theory. In practice however, they haven't shown to make any difference. There isn't a single country where you can track a difference in infection rates to mask mandates. Which to me makes it abundantly clear that masks just don't matter.

AlixandraTheGreat · 03/09/2021 12:45

@ILookAtTheFloor

I don't wear one now.

I think the evidence for them is weak.

I'd wear one in a hospital or other medical setting, for pure theatre purposes.

So you're okay, then, if the nurse that treats you also wears a mask "for pure theatre purposes", or your surgeon, in actual theatre? What if your surgeon decides not to play along with the "theatre" in the theatre?

@UpstreamSwimmer Anyone that has an ounce of common sense will recognise that something over the mouth and nose of an infected person is better than nothing. In addition, something over my mouth and nose to filter any particles heading my way is better than nothing. This is why masks make a difference.

moohoop · 03/09/2021 13:00

I'm on a busy train right now and barely anyone is wearing one. Feeling quite exposed.

BroccoliFloret · 03/09/2021 13:06

I wish I lived in England where you have the choice.

Here in Scotland Queen Nicola is clinging desperately to her mask-wearing.

gardeninggirl68 · 03/09/2021 13:07

That's interesting that there's no actual evidence they have made a difference

Sadiq is still enforcing it on London transport. To be fair though with the tube coming through from Heathrow and the sheer volume of people I think erring on the side of caution is a good thing.
teenagetantrums · 03/09/2021 13:12

I don't wear one.. expect at work where l have to when in communal areas. Just back from a few days in London..took masks as you have to wear them on public transport there..no one was wearing them so l didn't bother.
Funnily in the hotel the only people wearing them seemed to be teenagers

megletthesecond · 03/09/2021 13:14

I would.
But I've not forgotten one yet. I always keep a spare in each bag anyway.
