To think friend is being really selfish

We are in Cornwall which has one of the highest case rates in the whole country and masks will be required in our schools thank goodness. Today I went round to see my friend and she has been quite against lockdowns she once shared some us for them stuff on Facebook. I have been highly cautious and took a LFT before we went. Today she was chatting to me and called it “disgraceful” that masks would be required and says she has written to the school to say her DD (14) is exempt and won’t be wearing one even though she isn’t. Aibu to think friend is being really selfish and it will be the fault of people like her if schools shut again.

No it won't be her fault. Stop blaming other people. Not everybody is as convinced of the efficacy of masks as you. And a lot of people find them very uncomfortable (me and all my colleagues included)

Yes yabu.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 30/08/2021 00:09

No, it’ll be fuck all to do with the odd teenager not wearing a mask in school.

Tiramiwho · 30/08/2021 00:12

I agree with your friend.

Thislittlefinger123 · 30/08/2021 00:24

I'm with your friend I'm afraid

Explosivefarts · 30/08/2021 00:26

Your friend is right the child shouldn’t need to wear a mask

HailAdrian · 30/08/2021 00:30

I thought the phrase was 'stupid and selfish?' Anyway, I disagree that your friend is selfish.

greenlynx · 30/08/2021 00:31

Yes, I think that she’s selfish, but I bet my opinion won’t be popular.
It’s interesting that she’s so convinced that she’s right but she has written to school that her DD has been exempt not that she herself was against wearing masks. Just a thought.

GintyMcGinty · 30/08/2021 00:35

YABU

HairyFloppins · 30/08/2021 00:48

It's bloody no ones fault FFS.

PurpleOkapi · 30/08/2021 01:02

YABU. Your friend is doing what she believes is best for her child. That's her job. If that's not compatible with what's best for someone else's child, that's their own parent's job to worry about. Neither is being selfish. The studies I've seen on mask mandates in schools suggest they don't make much difference, anyway. That's probably because most children don't wear them right. Covid poses such a low risk to healthy children that there's no medical reason to shut down schools over it. If that happens, it's because some believe children should be forced to make sacrifices so that a small-but-vocal minority of those more at risk can feel safer about their refusal to make those same sacrifices for themselves. They're the ones at fault, not your friend.

Except the science says the masks are effective and if you’re arguing with the science and you don’t have a scientific background, you’re wrong.

You know what makes me uncomfortable. One hundred and fifty thousand deaths in the U.K. alone.

Grow up.

LadyCatStark · 30/08/2021 01:06

I with your friend. I’m never putting one of those horrible things in my face again and neither is DS.

PurpleOkapi · 30/08/2021 02:09

@travellinglighter

Except the science says the masks are effective and if you’re arguing with the science and you don’t have a scientific background, you’re wrong.

You're conflating two different things. Whether masks are effective in a controlled laboratory setting is a very different question from whether mask mandates are effective in real life. And that, in turn, is a very different question from whether they're effective for children in schools. The science actually says requiring masks in schools is ineffective.

nymag.com/intelligencer/2021/08/the-science-of-masking-kids-at-school-remains-uncertain.html

If it isn't safe for a high-risk child to attend schools without a mask requirement, imposing such a requirement doesn't make them safer. Encouraging the parents of high-risk children to believe otherwise is encouraging them to needlessly risk their children's lives by sending them to school based on the mistaken belief that mandatory masking makes them substantially safer. And for what? To score political points? To look for someone to blame when the inevitable happens and lots of students get covid? None of that is a good reason for any of this. Wishful thinking isn't a substitute for science.

Also, whether someone is right or wrong depends on whether what they're saying is factually correct, not on whether they have this all-important "science background." If you do have such a background, then surely you know that facts don't change based on the qualifications of the speaker.

She sounds like a dickhead. These people are everywhere unfortunately . This pompous letter writing really irritates me. All these people are doing is to mark themselves out as disagreeable, self centred a-holes. They all think that they are so enlightened and yet they behave like members of a cult.

I had to take LFTs before going to visit my daughter.

timeisnotaline · 30/08/2021 05:20

I think she’s selfish too. I think US schools data is showing masks help block the spread in classroom environments. All the republican governors over there trying to ban mask mandates in schools send their own kids to private schools where they all have to wear masks. It’s just other people’s kids they are happy to have catch COVID in school.

I think that was very sensible. I took an LFT before l returned to work following my AL.
walksen · 30/08/2021 06:15

The government have abandoned any aim to stop infections really. Their aim is to live with it. If you haven't had it already you will do Donner rather than later.

It does make it seem ridiculous though when people demand we help people/women/girls of Afghanistan when so many people wouldn't even wear masks or test for Corona virus, take vaccines etc to help people on this country.

Look out for you and yours op. No one else will.

Chessie678 · 30/08/2021 06:26

@Imfedup12
Italy’s current overall mortality from covid is slightly higher than the UK’s which suggests slightly higher or similar numbers in Italy have been infected.

Most studies show that mask mandates make no or very slight difference to the spread of covid. There was a US study last year that appeared to show that mask mandates make a significant difference but by the time they came to publish it the data had changed so this was no longer the case and they retracted it.

We can see in Scotland at the moment that covid spreads fast in schools despite masks so as a pp said they’re not making schools safe for cv children.

I know. We can't take LFTs before every time we see another person.

Can you clarify what it is I've said that requires me to grow up?

GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr · 30/08/2021 08:11

Good god are we still blaming people for the spread of a highly transmissible virus?!

Virus is gonna virus, whether the odd teenager doesn't wear a mask in school or not.

Or maybe she should be forced to wear a bell around her neck and shout 'unclean' as she walks around school?
