Do you think we will be locked down this autumn/winter?

I wouldn’t like this to happen but I can’t help but think it will.

What do you all think?

OP posts:
HelloMissus · 14/08/2021 18:28

No I don’t.
The current exit wave is better than anyone feared and every day more are vaccinated.
Plus they’ll have boosters coming out soon.

That said, none of us can say for sure.
So. Enjoy. The. Summer.

WhenZoomWasJustAnIceLolly · 14/08/2021 18:31

I think there will be but hope to be proved wrong.

ExpressDelivery · 14/08/2021 18:35

No, unless something happens that makes vaccines ineffective.

I do think we're in for a rough ride though, from all the bugs that we haven't been getting for the last 18mths.

Abraxan · 14/08/2021 18:36

@AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair

How did you get experience of most schools? There are 1000s of schools in England, how many exactly did you have experience of?

In my experience 100% of the 1 school I know had several measures and a tiny number of positive cases while the school was open. In my second hand experience of talking to other people this isn't unusual. I guess it's self selecting but parents on here may be unrepresentative.

I simply don't thing that opening a few windows by a few centimetres (as that's all they'll go) and putting the tables into rows was much of a mitigation. Many English schools don't have the space for social distancing. Even the teachers can't remain 2m away from the front row in a lot of classrooms.

I know 'on paper' most schools probably had lots of mitigations, as the government liked to tell us. However, the reality for many schools was that there was very little we could really do fully.

The rate of covid infections in secondary schools when fully open was the highest age group for infections. Primary school was also fairly high.

My own school was hit really hard despite doing everything we could to prevent it, All of the local schools were hit hard - either in the autumn term or, if soared then, in the summer 2 half term particularly. This seemed to be a pattern for many schools I either know of through work or friends with school aged children, or in the educational based media.

Surely no one ever believed schools were genuinely 'covid safe' did they?!

mum2jakie · 14/08/2021 18:39

No. No more lockdowns please! Although I said that before the last one too...

Abraxan · 14/08/2021 18:42

Despite this I still don't think there will be lockdowns involving schools unless children themselves start becoming very ill with it.

And hopefully previous infection for children will mean greater immunity in schools, especially in those schools which have already been badly hit in the last year. As my school was hit hard and many of the staff, pupils and parents caught it we should hopefully retain some safety from that as we go into this coming autumn/winter term.

I certainly wouldn't want to see increased restrictions in schools again. It made our job much more difficult and it wasn't much fun for anyone. As it is my LEA are still retaining some of the mitigation's we were able to put in place, but I am also looking forward to being able to return to more normality as time goes on.

applesandoranges221 · 14/08/2021 18:44

Yes. Once the crime bill passes ( and therefore the government can prevent protests, impose harsher punishments etc etc) the lockdown will be swift and fairly brutal.

Iseeyoulookingatme · 14/08/2021 18:46

Yes I do think we will have another lock down probably the same time as last winter. I hope I'm wrong though.

MarshaBradyo · 14/08/2021 18:46

Do you mean even if not needed. Why?

Don’t you think they’d like a functioning economy and end of furlough?

Gilly12345 · 14/08/2021 18:49

No but why worry?

applesandoranges221 · 14/08/2021 18:51

@MarshaBradyo I do mean that, yes. All of course under the guise of “keeping us safe”.

AtomicBronde · 14/08/2021 18:52

I don’t think the OP posted she was worried @Gilly12345 she asked us what we thought?

Moonface123 · 14/08/2021 18:52

No, l don't waste time worrying about such nonsense. If we do so what? It's hardly the end of the world. A few weeks inconvenience at most.

Antinerak · 14/08/2021 18:53

I imagine there will be one in October. Schools + unis going back like last year will cause spikes. They might do one as a precaution before Christmas. I hope if there are spikes in cases and deaths they'll lockdown over Christmas to slow down or prevent the worst of it.

LaurieFairyCake · 14/08/2021 19:00

Why ? Explain what you mean applesandoranges

ConfusedConfusedConfused

IsItWorthTheHassle · 14/08/2021 19:10

I suspect we will have to deal with yet another variant.
Because the rest if the world is not vaccinated.
And we still have very high levels of cases (even if the death rate is lower)

Amazing what herd immunity can do isn’t it? Hmm

Well, firstly there’s this little word called please that some of us like to employ.

Secondly, governments removing civil liberties to protect from a threat is a fairly well documented path throughout history, followed by more and more rights being removed and the threat more and more exaggerated.

The coronavirus regulations have set a precedent for the police having totalitarian powers, the Crime bill removes the right to protest and the Sarah Everard vigil shows what happens at the confluence of those things. I have lost four people I loved to COVID, am vulnerable and am still FAR more terrified at the thought of the rights we have lost and the horrors of lockdown. A poster up thread described losing your job / living on 80% minimum wage, possibly with children to feed and keep warm, as an “ inconvenience”.

Badbadbunny · 14/08/2021 19:17

No, the country can't afford it. It's already cost the country hundreds of billions, and huge numbers of people have been very badly affected by lockdown, such as the 3 million self employed excluded, those made redundant, etc. The cost to the country and to millions of workers in badly affected industries simply can't happen again.

LaurieFairyCake · 14/08/2021 19:19

Well you still haven't explained WHY?

You've explained HOW - you've explained how they have removed rights (which I understand and agree with you on)

So pretty please with fucking sugar on top - WHY would they do such a thing?

Shits and giggles?

I fucking HATE the Tories but they're not keen on tanking the economy more

Power.

People like those in government right now HAVE money. They will still have money no matter what happens to the economy.

Tell you what, rather than arguing about it now, let’s both bookmark this thread and come back in January and see who was right.

beigebrownblue · 14/08/2021 19:23

I hope not. But as far as possible I'm preparing for it as it was such a shock last time.

Also I think DD's sixth are too, as they've got a blended learning programme. Four days a week instead of five.

My guess is they've planned it so that if there is another lock down they can switch to remote learning.

WrongKindOfFace · 14/08/2021 19:24

I fucking hope not.

MarshaBradyo · 14/08/2021 19:25

apples it’s typically Labour / left who are more pro lockdown - in media and in government

Abraxan · 14/08/2021 19:26

Amazing what herd immunity can do isn’t it?

Well quite, but we don't yet know if virus acquired immunity is long lasting or not do we?! HmmConfused
