Covid positive family next door accidentally threw ball into my tiny garden

It bounced and rolled.I'm CEV.

Do I:

  1. Chuck it back and ask then not to kick the ball against my fence but on the other side to the non-CEV neighbours!
  2. Say nothing, but wear gloves and then wash my hands thoroughly and spray the grass with dettol kitchen spray
  3. Put a knife in it, and bin it, like DH suggests
  4. Stroll out there and simply chuck it back and don't worry, it's outdoors, just wash my hands with soap and that's it.

PS, I wouldn't really take option 3, it must be hard for them being cooped up for 10 days over the summer holiday.

I can’t believe there are people telling you it’s risk free. Of course it could infect you! Like you say, sneezing, coughing etc and they are handling it whilst positive.

I’d leave it where it is. If they asked, I’d tell them I was CEV so I’m not touching it for now.

Treezan82 · 03/08/2021 20:39

Option 4 - make sure you wash your hands before you touch your face and don't go near the actual people. Soap kills Covid very easily.

JustLoveYourselfALittle · 03/08/2021 20:41

But people cough, sneeze etc everywhere. I've seen a few even in a supermarket sneeze etc.
One guy clearly was suffering with Hayfever as streaming red eyes etc sneezing Loads in tesco the other day. Not once did he cover his mouth.

Generalpost · 03/08/2021 20:42

@JustLoveYourselfALittle

Pick the ball up. Throw it back. Don't lick the ball.
🤣

Out of interest, are you back at work op? Visiting friends, going to the shops? Do you touch door handles etc How is a ball any different if you wash your hands afterwards?

Being cev means something very different now thanks to the vaccine.
Maybe embrace life again and live a little?

And? Do you think you'll 'catch' his hay fever and it will kill you? Hmm
Whathefisgoingon · 03/08/2021 21:20

@brittleheadgirl That doesn’t make any sense. My workforce aren’t all covid positive. Why would you willingly touch something you know has been handled only minutes before by someone who is sick? Some people have to go to work but you don’t HAVE to touch the ball. It’s about minimising the risk, it can’t be eliminated completely, obviously.

Well apart from there being almost zero evidence these days that you can contract covid this way, I just don't understand the drama?

Pick up the ball, throw it back and then wash your hands. Job done. Zero drama or hideous behaviour from 'dh'
Obviously if op can't be trusted to not lick her hands en route to the bathroom....

@Whathefisgoingon

I'd be interested to know the mechanism by which handling a ball which had been handled by someone with Covid, and then washing your hands thoroughly afterwards could possibly infect you...

You're being ridiculous.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 04/08/2021 16:50

@toolatetooearly

Call the police, then put your house up for sale, just in case.
🤣🤣🤣
Warhertisuff · 04/08/2021 16:53

@Wolframhart

I don’t think people understand what it’s like being CEV right now. Especially CEV and evidence that you are one of the lucky people that the Covid vaccine does nothing

If you are used to being hospitalized from the small viruses and food poisonings that other people barely notice, Covid is absolutely terrifying. Telling someone to just pick up the Covid soccer ball is kind of the same as telling them to go ahead and eat the dish that got left out of the refrigerator for a couple of hours. Sure, most people will be perfectly fine, but the odds aren’t the same for everyone.

@Wolframhart

What an absurd comparison...

By eating food you're potentially ingesting pathogens. By picking up a ball you're not... Covid can't seep through skin ffs!

Those that are CEV have enough to be genuinely concerned about without this cruel scaremongering nonsense which seems to be designed to ensure they perpetually live in terror at the slightest imagined risk.

garlictwist · 04/08/2021 17:01

Just kick it over? Problem solved.

TheTallOakTrees · 04/08/2021 17:20

I'd be more worried about your batshit option than catching covid from a ball.
Book a doctors appointment

TheTallOakTrees · 04/08/2021 17:21

@JustLoveYourselfALittle

Brilliant GrinGrin

Did you know the ball OP or did the warning about make you stop and think twice Hmm

TheTallOakTrees · 04/08/2021 17:22

Lick not know....

ClaudiaWankleman · 04/08/2021 17:27

Telling someone to just pick up the Covid soccer ball is kind of the same as telling them to go ahead and eat the dish that got left out of the refrigerator for a couple of hours.

The risk from food left out of the fridge for a couple of hours is also vanishingly small @Wolframhart

I think you're at more danger of falling over and knocking your head on the corner of a kitchen cabinet.

Whathefisgoingon · 04/08/2021 17:40

@Warhertisuff In the exact same way that handling a mask can infect you.

You handle the ball, before you know it you’ve touched your face etc.

Why risk it? There’s no need.

Againstmachine · 04/08/2021 18:14

Not really wash your hands straight away, I think some on here are hard of thinking.

Warhertisuff · 04/08/2021 22:20

@Whathefisgoingon

So the OP can't be trusted not to touch her mouth or nose between picking up a ball (a very low risk action even if the previous person handling it did have Covid) and going to wash her hands, despite being concerned? Do you think she has similar issues not licking her fingers after wiping her bum?

All this "you never can be too careful" bullshit is just that, bullshit that imprisons lives needlessly in anxiety and worry, being controlled by neuroses in the name of "being safe". Hours agonising over risks that are often literally one in a billion.

Warhertisuff · 04/08/2021 22:22

@garlictwist

Just kick it over? Problem solved.
But how will she ever take off her shoes without dying of Covid? Shock
ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 04/08/2021 22:23

Living Covida loca

YarnOver · 05/08/2021 05:55

Kill it with fire. Obviously

Bananalanacake · 05/08/2021 06:36

Get the garden concreted over so the surface is easier to clean.

PhilCornwall1 · 05/08/2021 06:40

Just kick it over? Problem solved.

And then shout "ave it!!!"

bumblingbovine49 · 05/08/2021 08:06

I would leave it for a couple of days, then pick up the ball and throw it back then wash my hands immediately afterwards

Transmission on surfaces absolutely does happen ( though less than first believed) , especially if a highly infectious person has recently handled an item and they have sneezed or coughed while holding it or recently wiped their nose etc. However the virus doesn't usually survive more than a few days depending on the surface type . Also even if you get some on your hands washing them before you touch your face will be fine I think. No need for gloves or disinfecting grass etc Grin..If I couldn't wash my hands immediately afterwards Id use a cloth or gloves to pick it up
