Covid positive family next door accidentally threw ball into my tiny garden

It bounced and rolled.I'm CEV.

Do I:

  1. Chuck it back and ask then not to kick the ball against my fence but on the other side to the non-CEV neighbours!
  2. Say nothing, but wear gloves and then wash my hands thoroughly and spray the grass with dettol kitchen spray
  3. Put a knife in it, and bin it, like DH suggests
  4. Stroll out there and simply chuck it back and don't worry, it's outdoors, just wash my hands with soap and that's it.

PS, I wouldn't really take option 3, it must be hard for them being cooped up for 10 days over the summer holiday.

I’m cev, and I’d do no.2. I know I know I know…. But if you know there’s covid next door then where’s the harm in wearing some gloves. Actually I wouldn’t do the Dettol, though!

I know what you mean about some people @brittleheadgirl . I know someone who recently went back to, as they call it, “deep shielding” because of the delta variant. Their vulnerability? At risk of diabetes. At risk! They don’t even have official cev status - the mind boggles at such weirdness.

FflosFfantastig · 03/08/2021 14:52

4 just chuck it back and wash your hands after.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 03/08/2021 15:03

I’d do 4 after I had left it for a while and when they weren’t outdoors again. They shouldn’t be knocking on for it as if they are covid positive they can’t leave their house.

You absolutely CAN catch the virus by touching a contaminated surface and then touching your eyes/nose/mouth. People are being rude. This virus can and does kill CEV people.

If the ball has virus on it and she picks it up it's now on her hands. Then she opens the door to get inside and transfers it there. It is NOT only airborne. Surfaces matter and she needs to think about what surfaces she touches after the ball and clean them. Why on Earth wouldn't she?

Not criticising people for being anxious but the risk of surface transmission is vanishingly low. Google it.

ballsdeep · 03/08/2021 15:14

I seriously thought this was a taking the piss op

They would have dropped the hands part of the slogan if surface transmission wasn’t an issue. Plenty of reports showing how long it lasts on different surfaces etc. So I agree the areas touched after would need to be cleaned.
FlyingFancy · 03/08/2021 15:19

You mean like they updated the symptoms list to include the most common symptoms.

Oh wait...

FlyingFancy · 03/08/2021 15:19

They would have dropped the hands part of the slogan if surface transmission wasn’t an issue.

In any case it's obviously still a good idea to wash your hands, no one is saying you shouldn't bother doing that.

aiwblam · 03/08/2021 15:19

People are being mean and stupid.

Touching something that someone Covid positive has touched is not a great plan. Put a plastic glove on and chuck it back.

No need to offer to get them supplies unless they are in some way vulnerable.

nether · 03/08/2021 15:20

2, as you are in a CEV household (have the least vulnerable person do it)

Add 1 if things keep coming over.

It's not a main route of transmission, but when someone is unusually vulnerable it's best to avoid avoidable risk

RapidRollerSkater · 03/08/2021 15:21

4

Day 9 here isolating with 2 teens, one of whom is very poorly. It’s very tough indeed.

It’s just a ball!

Disfordarkchocolate · 03/08/2021 15:22

I'd be doing 4 with some gloves on.

Confusedandshaken · 03/08/2021 15:24

As long as you don't lick it or cuddle it to you in bed at night you will be fine to throw it back and wash your hands.

Happy36 · 03/08/2021 15:26

Throw back, wash hands.

If it comes over again, ignore it.

Aposterhasnoname · 03/08/2021 15:26

Dear God in heaven is this what we’ve come to. There’s no hope for us.

Warhertisuff · 03/08/2021 15:27

@Branleuse

id wear gloves and go get it and throw it back, and write a note asking for them to be extra careful
How will you get the gloves off without touching your arm a little? And won't you need to touch the gloves to disinfect them?

Seriously though, throw it back and wash your hands... and that's that. You've eliminated any plausible risk.

wasthataburp · 03/08/2021 15:36

Hahahahah good one OP.

MrsTidyHouse · 03/08/2021 15:38

Put your handS in a plastic bag.

Pick up the ball, keeping hands in bag.

Slide hands up over the ball, thereby trapping it in now inside-out bag.

Chuck over the fence.

Wash hands. Which haven't touched the ball anyway.

Try not to be worried. Easier said than done, with new variants.

Jaxhog · 03/08/2021 15:48

Leave it for 24hrs, then pick it up and throw it back. Wash hands with Soap.

That way you'll be safe, and won't have to worry about them kicking the ball against your fence.

Katie517 · 03/08/2021 15:50

Throw it back, wash your hands and then with all respect get a grip!

How do you function day to day as an adult if you need to come on an Internet forum to get advice about what to do if you touch a potentially contaminated ball? You do realise every time you touch something out of your house hundreds of other people have touched it before you? Or have you not touched another surface in 18 months? I thought this was a joke post to start with.

Scandicc · 03/08/2021 15:51

Try to avoid licking it.

Imnothereforthedrama · 03/08/2021 16:06

It baffles me that it doesn’t occur to someone to wash hands after handling something that’s been on the floor anyway Covid or not .

TalkingOutYerArse · 03/08/2021 16:32

Throw it back then wash your hands.

Legomania · 03/08/2021 16:41

Do you mean outside? Or just in general? If I did that (young children) I'd be washing my hands all day long
