🚨👀 | HERE WE GO: The government is in talks with McDonald’s about discounts for vaccinated people

Via @thesundaytimes

McJab and fries GrinGrinGrin

Anyone else think this is completely bizarre?

And more spoon feeding, whilst it may not mention McDonald's it does mention Uber Eats which delivers Maccys (can only assume a MP has shares in Uber and not McDonald's)

AntiWorkBrigade · 01/08/2021 13:02

I don’t see this as a crazy idea either. It’s a token incentive. I’d be uncomfortable with more valuable incentives that might put pressure on people who really don’t want the vaccination to have it. Imagine if it was a £50 Tesco voucher - poorer people would face a pressure to be vaccinated that the wealthier wouldn’t. This is more aimed at giving the lazy and procrastinators who don’t have strong feelings either way a little nudge. I’m alright with that.

WildSwimming101 · 01/08/2021 13:07

If they won't to get rid of covid. More people eating fast food isn't going to help.

Give out a free hour at the gym, free hour with a dietitian, free hour with a personal trainer, free hour with a therapist, free veg box, free water for a week?

riveted1 · 01/08/2021 13:11

@Cindy974

Just goes to show how this really isn’t about health anymore.
If the vaccines aren't about public health then what do you think they're about @Cindy974?

Incentives in public health campaigns aren't a new idea. Vouchers for uber/deliveroo (it's not just MacDonald's but sure that makes a better story Hmm) will incentivise the crowd who couldn't really be bothered whilst those genuinely against it won't be impacted. Should be paired with free taxis to vaccination centres too.

Agree everyone who took it up before should be offered it - I'd be fuming otherwise Grin Also annoyed I've missed my burger by 2 years..

riveted1 · 01/08/2021 13:13

Also genuinely perplexed at those thinking this is going to contribute to the obesity crisis?

Uber and deliveroo offer options that aren't junk food, and even if they were, one takeaway is a drop in the ocean when it comes to the extremely complex issue of society and obesity.

FizziWater · 01/08/2021 13:14

As far as I can see this is not at tax payers expense, it looks like a variety of businesses are offeringincentives at their own expense.
If we got to herd immunity it would remove the need for vaccine passports and reduced the astronomical cost to the NHS, test and trace and all the other costs of this pandemic.

I agree with pp that offering to 12 to 17 would have a similar effect.

XenoBitch · 01/08/2021 13:16

Bizarre. Maybe address the reasons why some people are hesitant/declining the vaccine. If someone is scared to death about the potential side effects, then giving them poor quality fast food is not going to change anything.

RoseAndRose · 01/08/2021 13:20

BBC on various incentives - doesn't specifically mention MaccyDs, but it would be possible as I think it's on UberEats

The more specific McDonalds stuff is coming from US, where it is happening in several cities

There's a huge amount of effort being pooled into addressing people's concerns around the vaccine though @XenoBitch?

This campaign isn't targeted at those who are genuinely concerned about being vaccinated, it's for those who are more ambivalent and just cba yet. Hence why free easy travel like a taxi and a small incentive would make a big difference.

There is a core of the population who will refuse vaccine, you have posted on all the vaccine threads so I assume you wouldn't be swayed. As is your right. But among the under 30s I think there are probably many who haven't seen it as relevant or important and just not bothered. Every single extra vaccine administered gets us closer to that herd immunity Herd immunity will enable those people who refuse the vaccine along with those who can't have it and those for whom it doesn't work to be protected because the virus will have nowhere to go.
aiwblam · 01/08/2021 13:56

It's not bizarre at all. The majority of people love a McD. If this is what it takes to get more people vaccinated, then so be it. There are too many human beings in too small an area in the UK. Our only way out of the pandemic is for a sufficient number of people to have antibodies. Our population density is very high - same number of people as France, but we have these people in half the area. It's not remotely bizarre IMO - it's a logical thought process to get the country as a whole immunity.

I'm not sure why people don't realise how overpopulated we are here. It seems pretty evident from everyday life - not enough school places, massive NHS waiting lists, mega traffic jams are commonplace, things that you try to book are rammed full. We seem to have become accustomed to these things and don't see them as indicators that there are simply too many of us. We can't do anything about it, but it seems stupid not to acknowledge it.

kayakingmum · 01/08/2021 14:02

I think it's a great idea. We should try to persuade as many people as possible to get the vaccine.

Parker231 · 01/08/2021 14:13

DS was at the Lattitide festival last week and there was a mobile vaccination unit there. Anything which makes it easy for people to have their vaccinations. Not enough are having them so whatever works.

jasjas1973 · 01/08/2021 14:15

Possibly the stupidest idea i ve ever heard!

So get people to buy crap food with a huge carbon footprint!!!

In the USA, Biden has told the states to offer $100 to be fully vaccinated, thats something that really would boost vaccination rates, put money in peoples pockets, benefit the poorest and help the economy.

Another alt is Germany, massive increase in pop up vaccination centres.

jasjas1973 · 01/08/2021 14:17

The majority of people love a McD

Yes, which is why whenever i go to the supermarket, i m surrounded by people so fucking fat, they waddle and very slowly too.

Poor health is one reason we have had so many die from Covid, even Johnson acknowledged this.

HelloMissus · 01/08/2021 14:25

If it helps encourage the 18-25 yr olds then so be it. At the moment their take up rate is not brilliant.

Would love to know how many doses were given out there.

Fuck all I imagine.

LynetteScavo · 01/08/2021 14:31

I think the young people who haven't had the vaccine yet have largely not had to take responsibility for their health up to this point on their lives. Previous vaccinations have either been organised by their parents or taken place in school. Apart from using condoms and brushing their teeth and most young people haven't had to take much responsibility for their health. Maybe they need to be sent an appointment and be told to turn up to it. Preferably on a card or by text because my DC don't even open envelopes.

rottenatthetop · 01/08/2021 14:33

If it is working in the US, then why not do the same here?

The more people vaccinated, the fewer cases there will be, the fewer serious hospitalisations there will be, the less likelihood of another hellish winter in restrictions.

If people respond to this kind of incentive, excellent, let's go.

FizziWater · 01/08/2021 15:01

Would love to know how many doses were given out there.Fuck all I imagine

Would you actually prefer it if people didn't have the vaccine?
Even if, for whatever reason, you don't have it, why on earth should you feel satisfaction that others refuse it?
Because it's only by the overwhelming majority of people having it that's going to get us out of all this.

Parker231 · 01/08/2021 15:32

@Itsprobablynotcominghome

DS said he saw people queuing on the last day so hopefully a good number. You had to have a negative test or proof of full vaccination to enter.

lap90 · 01/08/2021 19:35

There were lots of incentives in the states for getting vaccinated, although it was offered pretty early on when vaccinating people I think.

I can't imagine discount at maccies would entice those who are yet to get jabbed. McDonalds offer discounts on their app a couple of times in a week regardless.

Dustyboots · 01/08/2021 20:01

Young people are not stupid. Our government is stupid and out of touch with reality.

Parker231 · 01/08/2021 20:03

In France there are no incentives- you have to get vaccinated if you want the Health Pass.
