🚨👀 | HERE WE GO: The government is in talks with McDonald’s about discounts for vaccinated people

McJab and fries GrinGrinGrin

Anyone else think this is completely bizarre?

I'm fully vaxxed but if I wasn't, this would have put me right off. I'd be questioning why they needed to do this

I think we all need to question why they feel the need to do this........
DumplingsAndStew · 01/08/2021 12:06

So almost fifty people commenting on it, yet still no source?

Tubbs99 · 01/08/2021 12:09

Surely the reason they’re doing this is because younger age groups don’t really need the vaccine and therefore the uptake isn’t as good? The government wants them to take it for the sake of older and vulnerable people. They‘ve tried stick, which hasn’t worked so now they are trying carrot.

Neondisco · 01/08/2021 12:10

I'm already double vaccinated and even if I could get discount I wouldn't likely use it. I'm vegetarian so not a fan.

But right now I don't give a shit what the gov to to incentivise vaccination. I just care that as mny people as possible get vaccinated. So I'm absolutely fine with it.

FizziWater · 01/08/2021 12:16

One MacDonald's is not going to make anyone obese.
It's not just MacDs they are looking at other incentives.
No one is being forced.
There is some anti vax among the young but mostly it is just lack of urgency / motivation and this might help.
Unless we get 90%+ vaccinated we will never be free of it all.

I for one prefer to see carrott rather than stick.

EssentialHummus · 01/08/2021 12:18

I for one prefer to see carrott rather than stick.

Or “reindeer treats” as we’ll now be calling them.

lifehappened · 01/08/2021 12:23

@Itsprobablynotcominghome

Didn’t someone on Mumsnet come up with this idea? And got ridiculed?
Yes I remember that 😂😂
chesirecat99 · 01/08/2021 12:24

My local council had a prize draw for 2 tickets to watch England play in the Euro finals for anyone who went to a walk in centre to get vaccinated or who booked an appointment.

lifehappened · 01/08/2021 12:24

Lol you don't get obese from one macdonalds guys

BoomChicka · 01/08/2021 12:28

I can see some teens holding out now to see if they up the ante. In the US some states were giving out cash, lottery entries to win $1m etc. If I was indifferent to getting the vax I might hang on to see what prize no.2 is..

FflosFfantastig · 01/08/2021 12:28

It's absolutely bizarre in every sense. It reeks of desperation. I wake up every day thinking surely the world can't get anymore weird and everyday I see that it can.

FloofyCushion · 01/08/2021 12:29

Well this confirms my belief that some posters are actually Tory stooges testing out their ridiculous ideas on MN before putting them into practice! 😂

ActonSquirrel · 01/08/2021 12:30

My admin clerk refuses to come to work more than one day a week however she just posted photos of herself out in a busy night club heaving with people 🤦🏼‍♀️

If it encourages them why not

Is your Google broken? But if you insist on being spoon-fed

The thread in question was almost universal in condemning the ideas so either the stooges are ignoring MN or they deliberately want to piss us off Grin
BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 01/08/2021 12:39

It isn’t desperate. Research has shown time and again that incentives increase participation in public health campaigns. As previous posters have said, certain states in the US have increased uptake with $100 shopping vouchers and in one town, a free pint with every jab for those of age.

I understand those questioning the logic of a fast food incentive when obesity is another public health crisis, it is a somewhat mixed messsge if you unpack it. However, I’m assuming (perhaps wrongly) that the gov have looked at what will incentivise the target group the most for the lowest cost.

user1497207191 · 01/08/2021 12:40

Yet another stupid initiative. If people want the vaccine, they'll have it. A free BigMac for those who don't won't encourage them at all. It'll just cost a shed load of money, those who want the jab will have it anyway but get the bonus of a BigMac at taxpayer's expense.

I can just about get my head around a free taxi ride to take people to the vaccination centre, as that could genuinely help people without transport, especially those living a good distance away.

But gimmicks like a free BigMac is ridiculous.

It's like the stupidity of Rishi's eat out to help out scheme - politicians are starting to look a bit thick these days.

Shallwegoforawalk · 01/08/2021 12:47

Should have made it Nando's, much more appealing to the young adults I know. Grin

ChocolateFace · 01/08/2021 12:52

I actually think it's really patronising. DS has eloquently (very unusual for him) explained to me why he's not keen on being vaccinated. I'm very pro vaccination but respect his caution on what he puts into his body.

He also works at McD's and has no desire to eat the food and drives his own car, so no need for an Uber.

The thing that would persuade him would be an advertising campaign involving someone he respects persuading of the safety. And the insistence of Covid passports for crowded venues.

He's seen me suffer more after being vaccinated than he did with Covid. He also knows one person who's experiencing what seems to be permanent numbness after vaccination (although I'm sceptical about this) and several girls who have missed periods. He's genuinely concerned about it affecting his fertility.

I know if I'd already had the vaccination and my lazy git friend was given fast food vouchers as an incentive I really wouldn't be impressed!

Whiskyinajar · 01/08/2021 12:53

It won't be an incentive for autistic DS who is terrified of needles.

He's 18 and absolutely refusing the vaccine despite all the advice and discussion

Me and DH are fully vaccinated but DS won't even hear of it.

McDonalds won't be enough of a pull for him.

DumplingsAndStew · 01/08/2021 12:54

@Crockofck

That link doesn't mention McDonalds.

And it's not the Times, as mentioned in the OP.

Are you lazy irl?

Although I don't have full share token.

Madcats · 01/08/2021 12:59

If they are so desperate to get more of the population vaccinated, why on earth don't they offer it to younger teens.

I can think of plenty who would willingly ask for it to stop them missing days and days of activities over the summer/next term because they need to isolate and/or don't fancy running the risk of getting long Covid.

LynetteScavo · 01/08/2021 12:59

Maybe give every one who left school/college/uni this year an increase on their grades if they have the vaccine before the end of August. Would be a bit complicated Wink but damn effective I reckon Grin
