Sajid Javid - arrogant, insensitive?

SJ coming under fire from many for his tweet yesterday following his full recovery from his Covid-19 diagnosis. As Health Secretary he should have chosen his words more carefully and been more sensitive to those who lost loved ones, suffering long covid etc

Unfortunate choice of words for the many reasons mentioned above. More confused messaging from a government trying to convince us to have the vaccine, continue masks wearing etc while simultaniously presenting it as an overreaction and telling us to get on with life and stop cowering.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 25/07/2021 09:56

Having said that, I don't think his Twitter comments were that bad.

All he's said that thanks to the vaccines we can live with it. Which sort of was the whole point of the vaccines.

As for Yvette Cooper, I hate the "fighting" an illness talk.

starfro · 25/07/2021 09:59

@Ghosttile

’the left who are actively cheering on the virus’

If you really believe that you need to seek help.

You see it all the time.

It's ike back in the 80's when the student LAbour party used to cheer the unemployment figures rising.

noblegiraffe · 25/07/2021 09:59

All he's said that thanks to the vaccines we can live with it

No, he's contrasted it with what we've been doing up till now - the restrictions, the mitigation measures, the lockdowns. All the sacrifices that have been made to keep it under control labelled as 'cowering'.

Whatshouldicallme · 25/07/2021 09:59

@noterook

I've no idea if Christmas genuinely believes it or not...I suppose i can believe that people who got letters or telephone calls to say that procedures or appointments they'd be waiting for "due to COVID" may have assumed the people meant to be providing those services were sat home on furlough like many others as it wouldn't have been explained outright when the procedure was cancelled that everyone had actually been redeployed to COVID wards!

It's obviously an important misunderstanding to correct as it will be a big disappointment to people expecting the NHS to be "back to normal" because clubs are open and you no longer need to wear a mask at the shops.

NakedAttraction · 25/07/2021 09:59

I don’t understand the issue. He said it was thanks to the vaccine, not to him being some super human. I think it’s really important to keep pointing out to all those reluctant to get the vaccine that yes, it might not stop you catching covid but it greatly increases your chances of having a mild case and avoiding hospitalisation.

It was the use of the word "cowering"

People have been living and dying alongside CV for 16 months now, insulting and mixed messenging from this arrogant fool.

Its the oppositions job to call out ministers plus most people did fight for their lives, most people do when ill - Coopers response was measured and compassionate.

Whatshouldicallme · 25/07/2021 10:00

starfro · 25/07/2021 10:02

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

Useless idiot.

Apparently he was the one insisting on the French restrictions.

The French restrictions are baffling and ridiculous.

Their case numbers are about to overtake ours ( the Labour bots will blame this on Boris because reasons).

Personally I'd green list every country because we should no longer care about cases.

ChristmasShearwater · 25/07/2021 10:05

If someone disagrees with you, you hurl insults and accused people of being goady or bots.

What I have said about the NHS has been well documented. Consultants (who weren't redeployed) have expressed their frustration at not being able to treat patients. The backlog is terrifying.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 25/07/2021 10:07

I think his point was to highlight the benefits of the vaccine.

Again, I find the “fighting an illness” just as inappropriate.

CoopsMalloops · 25/07/2021 10:07

😂 I’m on day 12 and I feel fine, also only had mild symptoms and I am not vaccinated. I’m a waking miracle!

lljkk · 25/07/2021 10:13

MN is full of people cowering from the virus.
Heck I know people IRL who have cowered.
The same group who have cowered are often very angry at anyone who didn't cower.

imho, When Javid wrote cower it was blunt statement but factual observation of real life widespread behaviour.

ChristmasShearwater · 25/07/2021 10:14

It was the use of the word "cowering"

Can't people think that cower was an inappropriate word but just shrug it off rather than throw a hissy fit all over Twittet and MN.

How do you cope in real life? Are you constantly offended and fuming?

noblegiraffe · 25/07/2021 10:16

It doesn't matter whether a random person on the internet thinks that people have been cowering.

It does matter when the Health Secretary makes a public statement that suggests that the nation have been cowering, particularly when due to his government's mismanagement of the crisis, nearly 130,000 people have died.

PiccalilliChilli · 25/07/2021 10:21

@Whatshouldicallme I'm not telling you where I live, but I will.say South London.

I work on the Tube as a station supervisor. So I've worked throughout too. Yes I have seen people wear the most prepisterous things when using public transport, as has DH who delivers parcels for a living. I stand by that statement. I am not lying.

London has a vast diaspora of people all with their own stuff to deal with. Just because you haven't seen it, doesn't mean one in 8m+ other London residents haven't.

Whatshouldicallme · 25/07/2021 10:21

@ChristmasShearwater

Where is this well documented? It just isn't true. Of course consultants want to be able to provide the care they have specialist training to provide and I'm sure are frustrated when they are unable to do so, but the NHS "copes" when COVID levels are high are by cancelling "elective" procedures to divert resources.

Of course, whether you agree that the NHS is really "coping" with so many services cancelled and whether you agree that cancer treatment is "elective" is a different issue. But this is what the NHS "coping" looks like, as the word is currently being used.

You may believe "getting the economy going" is worth the risks of soaring infection rates, but you will be sorely disappointed if you think the current plan to allow COVID rates and hospitalisations to skyrocket will have a positive impact on cancer and other forms of treatment for the NHS. It just doesn't work like that.

newnortherner111 · 25/07/2021 10:22

Insensitive in my opinion.

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/07/2021 10:24

Javid Insensitive and arrogant?

This is news because?

What level of deaths wouldn't be considered "mismanagement"?

Hungary levels?
Czech Rep levels?
Poland levels?
Belgium levels?
Italy levels?
Spain levels?
France levels?
Germany levels?

ODFOD21 · 25/07/2021 10:29

Yup he's a self centred twat like the rest of them!

PiccalilliChilli · 25/07/2021 10:29

Damn anyone who has a different view on things than the majority on Mn. Just because they have experienced it I'm talking bllocks. Just because they get so easily offended without analysing the Tweet first, I'm talking bllocks. Well everyone, this is my first flounce.

(Bangs door)

herecomesthsun · 25/07/2021 10:31

Management of the first wave was particularly inept in the UK. Corruption over procurement, late lockdown etc. Oh, ring around care homes.

Then failure to follow scientific advice in September, chaotic school closures in January.

We had a relatively sane interlude. Followed by Freedom Day.

IDK about other countries, I'm having enough to do with keeping up with the exploits of this one.

stairway · 25/07/2021 10:33

He’s an odd choice for the health secretary being more of an economist. However he isn’t a typical Tory. He grew up in a 2 bed flat and went to Filton college ( not the best) He must be pretty tough to get where he is. The economic cost of the virus is frightening and will cost lives/ reduce quality of life for years to come. He wants the country to get a grip and get back to normal ASAP.

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/07/2021 10:35

You forgot to mention, stairway - his dad was a bus driver Grin
