If you're still mask wearing, when will you stop?

Do you have a 'line in the sand'?

Depending on what happens with numbers and variants- I'm thinking 'once all adults have had the chance to be double vaxxed'.

When I no longer need to visit my DM in her nursing home.

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/07/2021 17:16

I think the Japanese (and some other countries) have the right idea, wearing a mask when they have a cold to protect others. I don't mind wearing one, I could carry on for a long time.

ADialgaAteMyDog · 24/07/2021 17:16

When the case rate is about a quarter of what it is now.

fucketyfuckwit · 24/07/2021 17:18

We live in an area that until recently has had very low covid numbers. At the moment it is sky high and has been for the past 2 months. When the local numbers are back down I may stop using a mask in some settings but keep one on me just incase.

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 24/07/2021 17:18

When my local area has gone down from its current deepest purple to somewhere in the greens. I really don’t fancy catching Covid, because it has a high probability of making you feel really lousy for a week or more and I imagine most other people in my vicinity feel similar. The downside of mask wearing in crowded indoor spaces is low.

On the tube obviously I won’t stop until it stops being compulsory.

nordica · 24/07/2021 17:18

I'd be happy to continue long term in some situations like busy public transport or GP/dentist etc waiting rooms.

herecomesthsun · 24/07/2021 17:19

I don't wear a mask to go out.

I DO wear a mask to go IN, if there is a crowd of other people there.

Absolutely no plans to change that in the current situation (I might eventually).

fallfallfall · 24/07/2021 17:19

when indoors in busy places, maybe never. the overall decrease in seasonal cold and flu rates were impressive. no one thinks less of the Asian population who wear masks regularly so maybe it will simply become more accepted.

GintyMcGinty · 24/07/2021 17:20

I live in Scotland and the Chief Mammy still requires us to wear one.

Highfive2021 · 24/07/2021 17:20

Not until we’ve had a long period of low stable figures.

DancesWithTortoises · 24/07/2021 17:21

From now on I will always wear one if I think I have something infectious to protect others. It's the civilised thing to do.

user1471453601 · 24/07/2021 17:21

As previous poster said, when the figures drop. At the moment, in my area, there are 900+ per 100,000. The worst they've ever been. The death rate is climbing, but not as dramatically as cases.

The current death rate here is higher in the 59 and younger age range, compared to the 60+ she range.

PuzzledObserver · 24/07/2021 17:22

For me it’s about case numbers, especially in the area where I am at the time.

I don’t have a figure in mind - but certainly while numbers are rising is not the time to stop. I will want to see them clearly falling and a good bit lower than now.

I also don’t think it will be a big bang all at once. I think I would probably stop wearing a mask first in places with few people where I’m not spending very long, but would continue in busier places and where I’m spending a long time.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 24/07/2021 17:22

When DS1's hospital says it's safe for him to leave the house.

Lemoncurd · 24/07/2021 17:22

I'd quite happily wear one long term, don't think anything of it now.

Indigopearl · 24/07/2021 17:23

Depends on infection rates and hospitalisation rates. With the recent news that vaccine efficency rapidly drops over time I think I will be wearing one at least until boosters are rolled out.

SpringRainbow · 24/07/2021 17:25

I haven’t really thought that much about it.

I guess when/ if rates are much lower than they are.

At the moment I am not even trying to estimate if/ when that will be.

I would be surprised if it’s this year. I really don’t know.

Ohjustboreoff · 24/07/2021 17:26

Definitely this. I lived in Japan for years so I'm used to wearing a mask if I became ill and also seeing others wearing masks. I found it very strange coming back to the U.K. and seeing no masks. I'm hoping it becomes the new norm, you're ill but need to go out or not ill enough for a day off - WEAR A BLOODY MASK!!!
Itsjustricemichael · 24/07/2021 17:27

Like the poster above.. wear a mask to go in. So if its busy environment I just need to navigate through for a purpose (like a supermarket, airport or train) meh I might just keep on wearing one. For other crowded indoor environments mmmm not sure, probably seasonal, let current rates drop, see how things go a bit. For me (I understand not for everyone) it makes no difference wearing a mask.

newnortherner111 · 24/07/2021 17:27

I have not thought of when it will be. No point hoping given the continued incompetence of Mr Johnson.

AliMonkey · 24/07/2021 17:27

Good question. I think a combination of higher vaccination rate (90% double-vaccinated?) and lower case rate (

Xiaoxiong · 24/07/2021 17:28

When I have a cold or cough - forever. Very happy for this to be normalised as it has been in Asia for years.

When I'm fit and healthy - I will wear one in a shop or small space if other people have them on. Otherwise it would feel impolite I think!

woodfort · 24/07/2021 17:28

I think I will just naturally wear ever so slightly less each week and it will fizzle out.

Got the train a few times this week (not TFL but into London)- didn’t wear in (outdoor) stations where most people didn’t either but I mostly did on trains, removing when it was close to empty. The tannoy asked us to wear when busy so that’s what I did. Probably my own internal definition of what is “busy” might get less conservative over time.

In shops I’ve been making a judgment on whether I think it’s the kind of place people will wear masks or not…

I can see myself barely wearing one at all come September or October assuming the mask mandate isn’t back.

Alocasia · 24/07/2021 17:28

For work, I will probably wear a mask forever now. It doesn’t bother me at all and I now realise it’s probably something we should have introduced a longer time ago.

For shops etc, only when numbers are significantly lower than they are now, though I’m not sure how I’ll know or what the cut off will be. Again, I don’t mind wearing one so it’s no big deal.

As pp said, hopefully we will become more like some Asian countries where mask wearing is perfectly normal for anyone with cold symptoms, anyone worried about viruses or anyone who just chooses to wear one.

AbsolutelySure · 24/07/2021 17:28

Just when I feel ready to do so
