If you're still mask wearing, when will you stop?

Do you have a 'line in the sand'?

Depending on what happens with numbers and variants- I'm thinking 'once all adults have had the chance to be double vaxxed'.

When other people stop wearing them. I'm a complete sheep on this issue. I find masks a complete faff and would really rather not wear one.

But shops still ask people to wear them and in most indoor places I've been in people have been wearing them so I'm just following the crowd and hoping it fizzles out soon.

SpindleWhorl · 24/07/2021 17:56

@clarkkentsglasses

I don't get this attitude of wearing one if you're sick

Why the hell would you knowingly go out sick anyway?

Pre Covid, I would never have gone out if me or my DC had been sick, colds, sick bugs etc - why would anyone be prepared to pass that on amongst other families or at work?

So I'm not going to start going out sick now with or without a mask

To go to medical appointments?

My 'sick' is being CEV and I need scans, etc. I also need to speak to pharmacists, OTs, physios, and occasionally buy essentials in shops that I can't get online.

I also need to get some exercise, sunshine and fresh air occasionally if that's ok with you.

I'm immune suppressed so all of the above is quite difficult tbh.

@Xiaoxiong

When I have a cold or cough - forever. Very happy for this to be normalised as it has been in Asia for years.

When I'm fit and healthy - I will wear one in a shop or small space if other people have them on. Otherwise it would feel impolite I think!

Yeah exactly the same
MeadowHay · 24/07/2021 18:02

What are 'low figures' to all the PP who have said that/variations of that? As the vast majority of you haven't given any actual numbers? What figures do you mean and what actual numbers are you talking about?

maddiemookins16mum · 24/07/2021 18:08

When the hospital admissions go down massively, people stop getting it (somewhat) and when there is clearly a proportionate drop in deaths.
That time is not yet upon us.

DancesWithTortoises · 24/07/2021 18:08

@TraumatizedFlower

So all people not wearing masks are uncivilisedhmm

This is what I've hated about the pandemic, nasty people ......

Except that's not what I said, is it? I said if I was infectious. I would hope people have realised how much it helps the spread of infection and would do it. Not to do so would seem rather selfish, don't you think? Protecting others is the civilised thing to do.

What I hate about the pandemic is people who lie about what others have said in an attempt to make a rather pathetic point.

Unfortunately pre Covid schools actively encouraged you to bring your child in unless they had a fever, chicken pox, or some sort of sickness/ diarrhoea.

Even now in Covid times my children’s school still expect them in with coughs or colds as long as they have had a negative test.

Oh just to add, it’s not just my children’s school.

I have worked from home for a while now but when I used to work outside of the home my bosses also expected me into work unless I was actively sick with a sickness or diarrhoea bug.

Now I work from home it’s not a problem really.

Cornettoninja · 24/07/2021 18:15

@MeadowHay, that’s kind of the point (mine at least anyway). We have no idea when/where/if cases and therefore pressure on health infrastructure will stabilise. We’ve no evidence particularly for stabilisation either way and things are still very much in a state of fluctuation. Until we have a good grip of what covid is likely to look like with vaccinations in the mix there is no way anybody can truly give you the figures you want from them.

Until there is a period of stability no one can possibly call it either way so to a great many people it makes sense to keep behaviours tailored to living in a pandemic.

PeonyTime · 24/07/2021 18:17

Given the rates round me are over 1000/100,000 I cant see me ditching it soon.
I'd be looking for a sustained level at least 10% of current rates before I'll feel more comfortable.

essentialhealing · 24/07/2021 18:18

I said to dp earlier that when we're at the stage where less ppl are wearing masks in supermarkets than those that are I will stop too

I've been to Tesco twice this week and Lidl today and the mask wearing is still extremely high here, probably 90% wearing still

Dyra · 24/07/2021 18:20

When my work (hospital) says I no longer have to. Until then I'll keep wearing one in shops, public transport, and other enclosed spaces.

Mintjulia · 24/07/2021 18:21

I suppose when Covid is no longer affecting every hospital. But I only wear a mask in the supermarket and on the train. It doesn't have much of an impact on me really. I forget it's there.

Pootle40 · 24/07/2021 18:22

If I was in England I wouldn't be wearing one but sturgeon saying we need to up here.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 24/07/2021 18:23

When cases drop to less than about 30 per 100,000 maybe or when it’s declared over. I don’t mind them and other bugs seem to have circulated less which has been nice.

Eaumyword · 24/07/2021 18:23

@Highfive2021

Not until we’ve had a long period of low stable figures.
This!
User5827372728 · 24/07/2021 18:23

A few weeks after I’ve had my second jab, when there isn’t 30 plus thousand new cases a day

Itsanewdah · 24/07/2021 18:25

Forever in closed spaces (train, supermarket etc). I always loved that in Japan. You never know if somebody else is vulnerable, and its such a small thing to do that can help others so much.

These figures. My target would be pale green, so under 49 per 100,000 like they were last summer or early this spring, rather than 1,500 per 100,000 like the MSOA immediately north of mine.

tigerbread20 · 24/07/2021 18:27

I’d be happy to wear one forever more to be honest, but definitely until after I’ve had my baby.

GreatBigBeautifulTommorow · 24/07/2021 18:42

Probably when we don’t have to wear them at work (Nhs) and we’re not seeing a strain on the nhs from Covid.

Don’t bother me really, I’d happily keep wearing one

Attheheart · 24/07/2021 18:51

I shall follow the social convention of where I am. ATM most people in most enclosed spaces seem be wearing them so I shall continue. If it gets so I'm the odd one for wearing one, I'll stop.

I don't feel strongly one way or the other, but it's no hardship so I do it to be seen to be considerate to those who do feel better when people wear them. Basically, I don't want to look like a selfish arse.

VicSynix · 24/07/2021 19:02

A lot of the small, independent shops and cafes in our town have asked for people to keep on wearing them - as if their staff have to isolate, they have to shut and they can't afford that. A lot of them also have young staff who've only had one vaccination so far. So while they're still asking, I have absolutely no problem in wearing a mask.

These are places that have kept going throughout all the lockdowns, supporting the local community by supplying essential food or takeaways and generally making everyone's life a bit easier during a crap time. So I feel it's the least I can bloody do.

Colds and coughs can easily linger for weeks even if the infectious period is over, and most people wouldn't be able to not go to work or school/uni etc. for two weeks. Perhaps WFH will become more common when someone is ill but still well enough to work, though.

Don't forget many people don't get any sick pay anyway so missing work is not an option for something that doesn't make you sick enough to be unable to leave the house.

megletthesecond · 24/07/2021 19:07

I was pondering this and assume things will be much much better by next spring. Although I might still wear one in winter and if I use public transport.
I double mask in shops and can jog in one if its busy, they really don't bother me and frankly I can't be bothered to risk being a bit poorly (lone parent).
