Schools - we just have to bite the bullet...

It's completely futile to think we can stop Covid spreading through schools in the longer term. Who are we trying to kid? We may be angry that we are in this situation, but we are and we have to live with it.

It seems to be that it will be far better all round if Covid is just treated as we would the flu in schools. From September all teachers and CEV pupils should have been vaccinated, so we may as well just let it happen, with children off school when they are too unwell to attend. At least that way, disruption will be minimised and concentrated into a few weeks at the start of term.

@Whichjab
It's bizarre, isn't it? I do hope that is what it is, and not real. Thanks, that does actually make me feel better. It's just a barbaric attitude, and just not the country I recognise any more.

Today is likely to have a huge number of cases, so perhaps it's because of that?

Howshouldibehave · 21/07/2021 09:15

I think the government will change its mind and offer vaccinations to over 12s in the autumn term.

It is bizarre, there is always a run of these types of post, maybe I'm wrong about this one but there has definitely been a history of flooding MN and trying to get us to change our opinions .

Huge case numbers, increase in deaths , more travel bans or just the desire to make everything the publics fault.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 21/07/2021 09:19

@ineedaholidaynow

Not all CEV pupils will be vaccinated though, only the older ones will
That isn't a fault of the government or DofE or anyone else though, its because there hasn't been a vaccine approved for use in younger dc
hedgehogger1 · 21/07/2021 09:21

Is that not the plan anyway? My kids both have underlying health issues. DS was told to shield for a while. It's going to be interesting anyway....

Only if they can obtain the supply and the staffing and logistics to administer them aswell as offering the boosters at the same time.
ineedaholidaynow · 21/07/2021 09:23

I know @Wellbythebloodyhell, I was just commenting as the OP stated that all CEV pupils would be vaccinated

Fountainsoftea · 21/07/2021 09:31

It's not just death though, is it? It's the effects. Dh was pre diabetic a year ago. He is on the verge of being overweight according to bmi. A nasty dose of cv in January and he is now full blown type 2. Points, or whatever, shot up 10points. Nothing else has changed. No huge weight gain, no dietary changes. No underlying illnesses. Just cv.

Underhisi · 21/07/2021 09:44

"Not all CEV pupils will be vaccinated though, only the older ones will."

Not even the older ones. A large proportion of those eligible can only realistically be vaccinated in school, where they are usually vaccinated.

noblegiraffe · 21/07/2021 09:50

But won't be. The list of children 12+ who will be vaccinated is pretty restrictive and even then, even if they are vaccinated as soon as possible, they won't be double jabbed by then.

And of course there are no plans for primary CEV kids.

There are, however, plans to vaccinate all secondary pupils for flu. If you're arguing that we should treat it like flu you might want to rethink that line.

Canigooutyet · 21/07/2021 09:52

it will be a nightmare for staff in schools. School I used to work in will have the tas doing the 15 minute obs like they haven't already got enough to do trying to help pupils learn, intensive physio after surgery, personal care, gastro feeds, suction and more.

Canigooutyet · 21/07/2021 09:54

To those that missed the link about those children that will be vaccinated including g the logic of why healthy youngsters will not be offered it. any

No, it's what the vaccinations committee suggested in their report, (totally outside of their remit) to solve education inequality. So expect a large scale propaganda effort in favour ramping up over the summer.
FoolsAssassin · 21/07/2021 10:00

What are your thoughts on things to help those DC whose health is damaged as result of contracting Covid?

SqueakyPeaks · 21/07/2021 10:04

I think the problem is that your flu analogy doesn't work. Covid isn't flu. It may cause organ damage which frequently persists for months in young people with no underlying health issues or co-morbidities.

DumplingsAndStew · 21/07/2021 10:06

@duffeldaisy

Yeah, let's just downgrade all illnesses. Let's treat Covid like the flu (which would actually mean jabbing children for it. We don't let flu run rampant in the community or in schools, we have huge vaccination programmes among the young, the old and health workers, but ignore that).

Let's treat cancer like a cold while we're at it. It doesn't affect many younger people, and the ones who die from it are very ill. Mainly because they've got cancer.

FFS. I cannot actually believe how callous people have become.
Look beyond this country and what others are doing. Not everyone has lost their ability to care or want the best for us all. This 'let people die' thing is sickening, really disgusting.

👏

I think the Government should support care for those children... However the fact that health advisors aren't recommending all over 12s be vaccinated after months of study implies that the health risk is very, very low... and not statistically lower than the risks associated with the vaccine.

This is what I was thinking. A friend’s DC who was very fit and did loads of sport has seen a paediatrician and been told they have ‘sticky blood’ and it as triggered a thyroid condition. They can barely get through a full day of school and go straight to bed. No chance of returning to their sport at the moment.

The other 5 family members are older and recovered with no ill effects.

changingstages · 21/07/2021 10:10

I'm so relieved to see some sensible answers on here as well as the LET IT RIP brigade. It's fucking terrifying how stupid people are... almost as if some are posting in bad faith.

DumplingsAndStew · 21/07/2021 10:11

@bluetongue

Yes, some will scream ‘what about the children’ and ‘what about long covid’ but those with health anxiety will just have to work through it.

Sorry, are you suggesting Long Covid is a mental health issue? What is your basis for this?

And on the subject of mental health issues, do you think they can all be solved by "work[ing] through it"?

FoolsAssassin · 21/07/2021 10:15

Thanks for posting your thoughts - What would this support look like exactly do you feel?

Given there is talk of mitigating the course content for GCSE but not A level next year and to start the school league tables for GCSE next year, do you trust the Government to act in our DC’s best interests?

I don’t I’m afraid. A year 13 at my DS’s school died recently. I suspect from the phrasing they have killed themselves. I know a lot of the year 13 were and are extremely stressed after the mess over the exams that the Government have caused. I have not seen any evidence that they will act in a way to protect our DC.

noblegiraffe · 21/07/2021 10:17

Sorry, are you suggesting Long Covid is a mental health issue? What is your basis for this?

Funnily enough, Robert Dingwall of the vaccinations committee, who argued fervently against vaccinating teens (and whose influence you can see in the report) was on Newsnight the other night suggesting pretty much this.

Howshouldibehave · 21/07/2021 10:17

The MHRA approved it in 12-17s ages ago. The government advisory committee is the one dragging its heels about it. Almost like there is another agenda there!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 21/07/2021 10:17

2 sixth formers at DD’s school killed themselves due to lockdown.

Dd was also in a right mess about online lessons.

I don’t trust this government to act on anyone’s behalf except their own.
