@Fairyliz

Surely this must mean the vaccine isn’t working!!! On July 19th 2020 no one had been vaccinated and less people had had Covid so no natural immunity. Yet the deaths then were on 26. Still awful but not as bad. So does the vaccine work or do we just have to take our chance?
As I understand it, the vaccine doesn't prevent you from catching Covid, it just makes the disease much less severe & hugely reduces the chance of dying from it.

Quite frankly I no longer give a shit if thousands die. Humanity, unfortunately, can and will make many thousands more.

nopuppiesallowed · 21/07/2021 19:15

I gather that the French hate their government and think they're inept. So do the Italians. The Netherlands are having major problems and so are the Spanish. It seems the people of every country (including the Australians) are heavily critical of their government. It's a pandemic. No one knows how to deal with it. It's a shocker....

MrsFin · 21/07/2021 19:16

How do you know the vaccine hasn’t actually made your immune response worse?

I'm taking part in a vaccine trial, for a vaccine that's now been licensed in the U.K. I know it's effective because I have a blood test every two months.

There will be similar ongoing studies for all the vaccines. My trial lasts 24 months from when I had the first vax in Jan 2021.

My DD is a nurse working with covid . She says most of those dying tend to fall into one of two categories, either unvaccinated OR double vaccinated with poor lung capacity , ie COPD etc .
Also one death recently went down as covid because the person did have covid but actually died of end stage liver disease .
Liverpool city put on vaccination sites in two of its largest parks last weekend for anyone that wanted could go to the park and get one so I'm sure plenty of young people got their first or second jabs .

On a humanity wide level I do agree with this.

I would change my tune if it was anyone whom I cared around though.
@Staffy1, I haven't read the full thread, but asking for all kids to be vaccinated won't solve much, if anything. Vanishingly few people under 20 have died of COVID, and most of them would have been CEV for other reasons. As a % of the UK's population, the deaths would be within a normal range once RTAs and drowning on inflatables, climbing, falling off ladders, or in swimming pools are included in the equation. There are deaths across the age range in every single age group every single day: each one is a personal tragedy, but as statistical evidence of trends, largely irrelevant and useless as a guide to shape government decision-making.
I’m talking about vulnerable kids, not all. In other words CV kids and severely learning disabled kids (or at least over 12s) who often seem to get much sicker than typical kids and can’t tell you if something feels terribly wrong (chest pain for instance due to pneumonia).

Thank you.

I agree. I didn’t care before the pandemic and I still don’t care.

He's not sitting in an office just plucking random dates and rules out of thin air!

re Johnson, although there are some excellent scientific advisers to guide him, at the end of the day he doesn't have to listen to them

He can also choose to listen to mavericks like Heneghan and Gupta rather than SAGE if he wants.

I don't think much of Dominic Cummings, but I think he has a point regarding the lack of sensible judgement at the heart of this administration.

beentoldcomputersaysno · 21/07/2021 20:00

Is that you Dom and Boris?

beentoldcomputersaysno · 21/07/2021 20:01

@herecomesthsun sorry, that was directed at the post quote and response before yours.

herecomesthsun · 21/07/2021 20:04

I can also credit that Johnson is very keen to placate, well all sorts of people (they are very populist) but especially the Telegraph readership demographic.

XingMing · 21/07/2021 20:08

Heart in mouth as I type this.

I am not unsympathetic as you clearly think I must be, but I will write it even so. In days gone by, and not very many years ago, very vulnerable children tended not to survive to adulthood. Thanks to advances in medicine, many more do live to a better age now, to be a source of love and joy for their families. It is desperately sad for the families, but as you say, their systems and communications are more limited. If your heart is bleeding for a loss, or you are worried Flowers

Tzimi · 21/07/2021 20:13

@wintertravel1980

Another country that has just entered the exit wave is Malta. They have vaccinated 80% of the total population (not just adults). Do we really think we will be able to exceed this level any time soon?

I am sure some people do not mind "standing in a meadow completely on their own ad infinitum" but for the whole world it is not an option.

If the whole world stood in the same meadow, people wouldn't be isolated!
BoredZelda · 21/07/2021 20:14

46,000 new cases....the last time we had cases that high we had 1500 a day dying

What number is acceptable to you? 100? 150? 300? Where do you stop being comfortable with the number of families who lose a loved one?

Oblomov21 · 21/07/2021 20:18

So? Most of those are even covid deaths. Many deaths were attributed to covid that weren't. Did no one died of anything else in the last 18 months. It would appear not.

We are vaccinating. We can't keep everything closed for ever. Loads of cases, but it's mild, not even as bad as flu, so what's your problem? Not even requiring hospital treatment.

I can't see the issue.

This!
MarshaBradyo · 21/07/2021 20:41

What does delaying it do to help?

Push hospitalisation to winter / next spring

It will be at capacity for a while other than that vaccines are administered and no improvements for some time

Chris08 · 21/07/2021 20:57

COVID is easily treated now that more is known with relatively cheap medicines. Don’t see any need for mad panic anymore.

nopuppiesallowed · 21/07/2021 21:07

Covid is relatively easily treated, now?
Flipping heck. I wish someone had told my doctor.
Best wishes from a previously active woman who loved walking and now can't walk as far as the local shops - 6 months after catching coronovirus.

Why are hundreds of thousands dying of it then?Hmm

My coworker is still suffering a year later. I hope that more research is being done into long covid and treatments. Bloody awful disease.
Funguy · 21/07/2021 21:18

I don't know if the vaccine is working or not. I nearly died last year and yes, I have had my injections this year. However, I have no faith in the Government and am now self isolating because I have a health condition which impairs my ability to fight disease. Antibodies or no, it depends on my T cells.
They needed to lockdown, not open up imho

Chris08 · 21/07/2021 21:18

Sorry for your exceptional problems but most recover without any medical intervention at all & a hospital bed is rarely needed. They seem to be calling all viruses COVID 19, we will always be susceptible to viruses & hiding away won’t change that.
