Their report isn't out till tomorrow, but continuing with the govt tradition of making big announcements via favoured news outlets, the Telegraph reports that the guidance will be that children aged 12+ will not be offered routine covid vaccinations.

"Instead, under guidance due to be issued on Monday, jabs will be offered to children between 12 and 15 who are deemed vulnerable to Covid or who live with adults who are immunosuppressed or otherwise vulnerable to the virus. They will also now be offered to all 17-year-olds within three months of their 18th birthday."

So from September, there will be literally nothing stopping covid spreading around schools bar the odd open window.

sashagabadon when this lefty wrote to their Tory MP they did indeed mention distribution of vaccines to poorer countries.

DinosaurDiana · 18/07/2021 17:09

Just booked my DD in for her flu jab in September. Thanks to whoever said I could.

Tealightsandd · 18/07/2021 17:31

These will be needed for all those poor sods that have had AZ so need a booster.

Yes unfortunately we don't have enough supply. If the Beta strain currently in France takes hold in the UK, we might need to look at giving mRNA boosters to people who've had Astrazeneca. Particularly over 45s and the vulnerable. We might also need boosters for everyone else vulnerable, whichever vaccine they were given. It's a bit uncertain right now as to how long protection lasts.

It would be better if we could vaccinate all children, but it's very good news that those who are vulnerable can finally get their jabs.

Gestures of grandiose are all well and good but not so generous and kind when the action puts vulnerable people in the UK at risk. We know that Covid is hitting poorer people harder.

What a shame that the drugs companies refused President Biden's call for a temporary vaccine patent waiver. Particularly as donated vaccines are just a drop in the ocean. Patent waiver is the quickest and best way to achieve good worldwide coverage.

Delighted with this, my dc are still developing & growing. One is a very promising young athlete in a high cardio sport, I wasn't letting her get it even if it was available. There's not enough research done on kids.

cherin · 18/07/2021 17:47

Well then it would be your free choice, I don’t know how you can be delighted that others are deprived of theirs

As parents, we are guided in our medical choices for our children by scientists all the time.
MareofBeasttown · 18/07/2021 17:53

I don't really understand people on here who dont want their kids to have it but also 9 mad keen to stop other people's kids having it.

Scottishgirl85 · 18/07/2021 17:57

Medicines are approved on a benefit-risk balance for the individual taking the medicine. If the balance is not in favor of benefit for the individual then it is not approved. It's really rather simple.

SoOvethis · 18/07/2021 18:12

Mine won’t be having it. They have all had covid and are fine so I don’t feel the need for them to take the risk with this vaccine while we still are learning it’s long term side effects. My husband is CEV and agrees with me before anyone starts. He has had covid too and was fine.
I can understand others feeling differently if their kids haven’t had covid and are more worried about the unknown of that as opposed to the unknown of the vaccine.
I just hope that the vaccine doesn’t become compulsory for kids at any point. It’s one thing making it mandatory for adults but that should never have the case for children.

MareofBeasttown · 18/07/2021 18:17

Given masks are optional, I very much doubt that vaccines would ever be made compulsory.

MushMonster · 18/07/2021 18:26

Being able to decide would be the perfect solution indeed.
Let's see if it gets anywhere close to that.

maggiso · 18/07/2021 18:29

Thinking about it the 3 months before the 18th birthday is to allow time to be fully vaccinated ( 2 jabs 8-12 weeks apart) before their 18 birthday.
I suspect the vaccine committee scientists are watching other countries who are vaccinating their children and young people now and waiting to see which is - on balance the least worrying! Is there an element perhaps that children getting rare but longer term medical issues ( long COVID etc) is more acceptable to public opinion from natural virus spread than any vaccine induced medical issues in the young?

m0therofdragons · 18/07/2021 18:41

So I won’t be able to visit my family in Canada as all dc 12 and over must be vaccinated to go there?

SCMocha · 18/07/2021 18:46
@cherin Boots seem to be allowing anyone to book a free flu jab, I have booked for my 17 to.
Are you sure it's the free one?
I went through all the questions and went to book a slot, and then noticed that it said 'private jab', when as I'm over 50, I should be eligible for the NHS one this year. So the free ones available at the moment might only be for over 65s or vulnerable.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 18/07/2021 18:50

Tealights this was in conjunction with vaccinating vulnerable children. It was when the BBC was going on about not vaccinating children at all. My response above was to a poster saying nobody ever mentions it.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/07/2021 18:50

I am so so angry about this. Beyond furious. Just WHY?!

So Dd 15 had to walk into a Covid infected pit every day with no isolation. Why is she disposable?

Notonthestairs · 18/07/2021 18:52

Who qualifies as vulnerable? Will it include learning disabilities?

Tealightsandd · 18/07/2021 18:56

@Notonthestairs

Hopefully they've looked at (global) data, to determine which conditions are at highest risk for serious illness or death.
Tealightsandd · 18/07/2021 18:59

Sorry @PastMyBestBeforeDate

I should've read through the thread properly.

Maybe because for most they don't actually need it, their immune system is good enough?

Sadsiblingatsea · 18/07/2021 19:11

Why on earth would a parent wish to inject their child with an experimental vaccine with so many side effects?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/07/2021 19:11

My dd and her friends are furious. They hate hate hate Boris with a vengeance. ‘We don’t count and aren’t important’ was her comment.

MareofBeasttown · 18/07/2021 19:14

@Sadsiblingatsea

Is it ok to allow 16 and 17 yr olds to make their own decision?
