New Boris Statement: Where is this going?

550 replies

DadAManger · 12/07/2021 17:20

‘We recommend masks but only recommend them’
‘Deaths will increase and we may reach 100,000 new cases per day’
‘We must open now and if not now, when?’
‘The slower we take it, the smaller number of people will die’
‘Return to the office of you can, otherwise keep working from home’

Just before Boris spoke, there was a BBC piece claiming that 10-20% of all Covid cases (mild, without symptoms, or otherwise) will be long-Covid cases of some sort or another. Now there a million long-Covid cases.

Are we aiming for herd immunity? Anyone else think this is going to be confusing for most and lead to a default setting of ‘normal’? Where is this going?

@XenoBitch

Best way to prevent thus happening, by preventing exhalations indoors

Riiiiight. How you going to police that one?

Staying outdoors whenever possible, and everyone catching their exhalations in masks when indoors

You know, the basics of 'your mask protects others, their masks protect you'

XenoBitch · 12/07/2021 20:58

Mask don't "catch" exhalations. If they did, you would suffocate.

bumbleymummy · 12/07/2021 20:59

@Puzzledandpissedoff

On top of all the fallout of lockdown, we also have the fallout of a system that behaved as if it was overrun, by cancelling appointments, treatments and operations, even when it wasn't. What on earth was the point????

To complete the privatisation of the NHS?
I see Javid's already doubled the estimate of the backlog, which could easily precede involving the private sector to help clear it, and from that other opportunities could arise

In fairness involving them could have merit, but is there anyone left who imagines it would be done for the good of the general population rather than as a crony-funding exercise?

They didn’t even use the private capacity that they were paying for last year.

@CallmeHendricks

"Personal responsibility" is the biggest cop-out I've ever heard. As I think has been pointed out already, how would that work for traffic speed-limits?
Yeah, but people have not been vaccinated against road traffic accidents, most of the vulnerable have against this virus
CallmeHendricks · 12/07/2021 21:05

That's beside the point. The thing is, Boris has urged caution, which means down to people's personal whim. In the same way that if there were no speed limits insisting we comply with consequences if we did not, many would drive at dangerous speeds causing accidents (even the otherwise law-abiding). And so it will be with this; if there is no "law" then more and more people just won't bother.
If the vaccines were the total answer, we would all be free by now, pretty much. But Boris has "advised" caution, which means there's still an issue.

Tinydancer321 · 12/07/2021 21:07

@Tealightsandd earlier on, on a bbc post someone tried to compare their 2 colds to long Covid 🤦🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

SomeKindOfFloppyWeirdo · 12/07/2021 21:08

Oh my god. I’ve been such a fucking idiot. Here’s me believing the gp and the paediatric consultant that ds was suffering from long covid, and that was the reason he’s been in pain for a year. Turns out long covid’s not real, it’s just bbc propaganda for the brainless masses and my gosh darned cheeky 11 year old was just faking it all so he could stay home on full pay from his lucrative public sector job!

I mean, he went all in Shock I don’t know how he faked his full body rash, the swollen eyes, cracked lips, huge tonsils, fast irregular heartbeat and raised inflammatory markers over multiple blood tests for a whole year. Guess that bbc propaganda is some strong shit! Stay safe everyone!

Tealightsandd · 12/07/2021 21:10

@Tinydancer321

Long Covid is a cold... Confused Oh dear

SchadenfreudePersonified · 12/07/2021 21:11

It is evolution and survival of the fittest

I think you'll find it's survival of the richest Ambroseli

Wealthy people with better diets leading to better immune systems, better housing (which means they aren't crowded together ), better working conditions (ditto - plus they can more often work at home, and certainly don't need to use public transport), better medical care (particularly when this corrupt cabal have finished selling off the NHS to their mates) . . .

Tinydancer321 · 12/07/2021 21:11

Do people honestly think I’m winter we won’t be in another lockdown!!! That our children won’t be missing another term of term of school where we have to pay for this to get the numbers back down to manage it.
I get we need to go back to some sort of normality however it maybe our normality has changed… I have 3 kids with asd, and as parents our normality had to change… it can be done. Maybe we will need to do weekly tests in the end (I mean proper ones) daily lateral flow tests even. If we want to do Normal things maybe we need small changes.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/07/2021 21:12

They didn’t even use the private capacity that they were paying for last year

You're absolutely right, but maybe forgetting that what actually matters to politicians is the advantage the deals had for them. If they followed the pattern of every one I've ever known, the effectiveness of what they were doing would take a very poor second place to this

I did like the idea that everyone should stop exhaling over each other though, but have an even better one. Perhaps we could all learn semaphore and avoid the need for talking completely?

TheDailyCarbunkle · 12/07/2021 21:13

'Long covid' is post-viral syndrome, which has been around since the dawn of time. Doom mongering about it is pointless - if covid is around then post-covid effects will be around. Again restrictions don't prevent infections they delay them - you can pointless restrict for years and people will still get infected, still get long covid. At some point (and that point should have been a long time before now) you have to look at the entirety of life and what's required to keep the world moving, instead of getting complete tunnel vision over one illness and letting everything fall apart around you.

whynotwhatknot · 12/07/2021 21:13

does it have to go through a vote in parliament this week?

rwalker · 12/07/2021 21:13

Don't understand why people don't realise lockdowns and restriction don't get rid off it we need to learn to live with it.

The people I experience shouting loudest tend to be pensioners and people on benefits where they finical security hasn't changed .

People on about long covid what about mental health It would be reasonable to assume more people suffer MH problem than long covid

MarshaBradyo · 12/07/2021 21:13

Tiny it is possible if the wave peaks before then

I'm sorry to hear about your DS - really nasty. As you say, either he is a budding De Niro (and with a job in the public sector your never knew about) or those claiming the BBC are full of sh*t are perhaps full of it themselves.

whynotwhatknot · 12/07/2021 21:15

Chris witty looks like he wants to cry at these briefings he clearly doesnt agree with dropping al restrictions in one go

Tinydancer321 · 12/07/2021 21:15

@SomeKindOfFloppyWeirdo sorry about your lo. Oh but he can’t have long Covid because Boris said children are uneffected so we keep sending our kids to school and not to worry about them getting sick . You know Boris said, his knowledge on science far out weighs yours sons consultant…. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I’m disgusted by the society we live in. It’s all about money. Like why should money come before lives!! Do people realise you don’t get a second life, they don’t want to wear a mask, my loved one doesn’t want to wear a ventilator!!!

Tealightsandd · 12/07/2021 21:17

rwalker Long Covid causes mental health problems. (As well as potential brain damage, heart damage, lung damage, kidney damage, diabetes, hearing loss, erectile dysfunction).

Chronic illness and disability (like Long Covid) unsurprisingly tend to affect people's mental wellbeing.

NannyAndJohn · 12/07/2021 21:18

@lovescats3

I think no masks will backfire economically because a lot of people will not want to use public transport and go to galleries etc - if they kept masks these people would go out
Yep. We're limiting ourselves to essential trips out only from now on.
Tinydancer321 · 12/07/2021 21:18

Mental health issues have been failed for years. I don’t understand how the restrictions we had at the min would effect mental health. As we could all see friends and family and go places. What will effect people’s mental health is another lockdown because we went clubbing and super close to everyone 🤦🏼‍♀️

Blankspace4 · 12/07/2021 21:19

I can definitely see us being in lockdown again October / November

Tinydancer321 · 12/07/2021 21:20

My mum has schizophrenia and how she is treated by society is awful. No one talks to her only stares. Yet so many people now care about Covid causing mental health issues as they couldn’t see their friend in a coffee shop. 🤷🏼‍♀️

XenoBitch · 12/07/2021 21:21

The restrictions we have at the moment has meant all the mental health support groups I used to go to are not running. That has had a direct impact on my mental health.
Tealightsandd · 12/07/2021 21:21

@SomeKindOfFloppyWeirdo
Flowers I hope your ds can access some support.

Hopefully all the research currently going on will find ways to treat and manage Long Covid.
