Double jabbed - how safe do you feel?

Coverage in the press today about advice to employers being slimmed down - basically it will be up to them to do their own risk assessments and decide on policy in their premises. Also coverage (and a thread already) about Govt plans to make Covid passports compulsory for access to pubs, clubs and restaurants from the Autumn - to encourage take-up of vaccines among the young.

If you are double-jabbed - how safe do you feel and are there things you will still not do?

I am double-jabbed on top of having had Covid. I am happy to meet with small groups of people indoors, but keeping a reasonable distance. I will continue to avoid crowded and cramped places, and to wear a mask on public transport and in shops. The mask is more to protect others in the unlikely event that I am infected.

My logic is that Covid has more chance of overcoming my immunity if I’m exposed to a lot of it all at once, e.g. the crowded stuffy indoor setting, so that is to be avoided. Whereas a ‘glancing blow’ of Covid from a short exposure is unlikely to overcome my immunity. If anything, it will remind my immune system of who the enemy is, and strengthen it.

Haven't read through the whole thread (sorry) but I don't think that's how it works. I think about 9 out of 10 people who have been double vaccinated will become immune and 1 in 10 won't produce antibodies and will still be able to catch it.

From what I've read airborne transmission is most risky and droplets travel furthest indoors with poor ventilation, but it's not 'weakened' outside. If you get it, it's the same.

Dumpedwife · 10/07/2021 21:27

I feel safer than Idid but I reality its a case of when I get it not if.
Had the substandard Astra Zeneca and at age 49 am not likely to get a booster.
Covid is rife and the delta and delta plus variant make the first variant look not very contagious on comparison.
I'm worried about ending up with long covid.
I'll wear mask and hand San but tbh, I don't think I will avoid it working in a very busy public facing role.

stopgap · 10/07/2021 21:29

Very safe. Double vaxxed since April, been on two vacations since that required flights, and the local rate is 2 per 100k. I’m in the US. We are at herd immunity rates in New England. Perhaps I’d feel less safe if I lived in a state with low uptake of the vaccine.

Chillychangchoo · 10/07/2021 21:29

Double jabbed and feel as safe as houses.

Ready to start living life to the full again. You’re never 100 percent safe in life are you?

Simbacatisback · 10/07/2021 21:41

Had covid
Double vaccinated

Don't give a dam anymore. Follow all rules but as they relax will do the minimum required not the maximum

We have sacrificed our children and young people for the elderly
. We need to get back to normality.

ilovesooty · 10/07/2021 22:18

Wtf is the substandard Astrazeneca

IcedPurple · 10/07/2021 22:19

@Delatron

I don’t understand when people say ‘colleague has caught it and been quite ill for the past week’

Why is people being ill scary? Admitted to hospital and in a serious condition is scary. People being ill and in bed for a week is par for the course in life.

Why are we scared of illnesses now? It’s life.

I don't get this either.

The dark muttering about 'All those of you who think you'll only get a 'mild' case, well, I was completely knocked out for 10 days with Covid and took several weeks to feel better."

Eh, so what? Not fun for sure, and it's not something I'd enjoy, but nor is it a reason I'd want to put my life on hold just so I 'feel safe'.

And to those who say 'Would you be happy to risk 'long Covid'? Yes I absolutely would. Life is full of risk, and that's one I'm very much prepared to take.

Yes, I keep thinking about this as well. We have always been susceptible to horrible colds/flu/viruses that could potentially lay us low for a long time, but no one ever cowered at home for months on end just in case.....

I had Covid back in March 2020 and while it wasn't pleasant, it was hardly something I would put my life on hold for. I know quite a few people who have tested positive very recently and all of their symptoms have been less bad than a common cold, but some of them have made such a fuss, just because it's 'Covid'. The fact that it's Covid doesn't make it more inherently bad if you just have very mild symptoms!

Ihatefacemasks · 10/07/2021 22:24

@ragged

I agree with every word.

MN Is a micro-world which bears no relation to real life. In real life, I don't know a single person who is in the slightest bit worried about Covid.

I will not wear a mask for one single minute longer than the law says. I have never had a habit of muscling in on other people's space, so I'm not going to do anything differently from how I have always done it (including during lockdown, when I went shopping every day). I will carry on washing my hands when I come in from outside, and before eating or preparing food, as I have always done.

MN is a weird world of paranoid and extreme anxiety.

Do you really not? I’m in a craft group that meets in a cafe. We have restarted meetings but disappointingly less than half the group feels safe to come back.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 10/07/2021 22:30

Double vaccinated since May, more than happy to drop all restrictions, masks and testing and return to pre covid life, and I also couldn't give 2 hoots if those around me are vaccinated or not, not interested, couldn't care less either way

RonaLisa · 10/07/2021 22:32

@TheCountessofFitzdotterel Genuinely not. Maybe it's partly because most of my friends are self-employed/run their own businesses/work in the Arts, so are desperate to get back to work.

I have a couple of friends who are a bit anxious about Covid - but if it weren't Covid, they would be anxious about something else. They are anxious generally (and this is not a criticism - I love them dearly, and their fretting is part of their loveliness).

Covid isn't the issue, though.

Ifitquacks · 10/07/2021 22:32

Yes to this. I had Covid last year. It was shit, I felt like absolute crap for 5 days, and then mildly shit for a couple of weeks afterwards. Just like when I had (proper) flu. And not as bad as when I had severe mastitis, or when I had quinsy. I never panicked about getting those things, and rode them out when I did get them. Just like Covid.

southeastdweller · 10/07/2021 22:35

About as safe as what I felt before. I'm much more likely to be harmed by a car accident or heart disease or cancer than I am/was of Covid. I've been loose with the guidelines and rules from the beginning and the only places I'll avoid is places that insist on wearing masks in their premises from the 19th.

I find it really sad that the OP is still planning on keeping his/her distance from people in their own home even though they're double-jabbed.

pourmeanotherglass · 10/07/2021 22:48

Not really sure.
Ive never had problems so far with coughs turning into chest infections and making me seriously ill, but DH has had this many times, so i started out more worried about him. He had something very like Covid in Jan 2020, I still think it could have been, there was something very nasty circulating in our area at that time. He was very ill and i was quite frightened.
We've both been double jabbed.
While the numbers were low, i was fairly happy eating out etc, especially with table service and distancing etc. Now that the numbers are very high, and the 19th may mean less distancing, I'll be a bit more wary for a bit. I'll probably continue to wear a mask for shopping until the numbers have dropped.

StressyWoman · 10/07/2021 22:50

I feel fine about going back to norma but I was never worried about me catching it, just passing it to my mum who ended up catching it in hospital anyway.

I will continue to wear a mask plus a visor when I go back to work though because I work in a club and I believe it stopped me getting Covid when in close and prolonged contact with 2 cases.

PuzzledObserver · 10/07/2021 22:56

@eurochick

I'm more concerned about the pain in the arse that is isolating than actually catching COVID.
Yes, that would be a real pain, since I’m about to move house, with an 11-day gap between addresses. A positive test before we’re fully installed would be a nightmare.
OP posts:
RoseMartha · 10/07/2021 23:03

Fairly but the busiest place I am likely to indoors go is the shopping centre or supermarket.

I also will keep wearing a mask if I feel somewhere is busy. Even though I hate wearing it.

Nonmaquillee · 10/07/2021 23:05

Really happy
Want to get back to living again

I worry far more about being killed in a road accident or diagnosed with a terminal illness than I do about Covid.

Dartsplayer · 10/07/2021 23:07

Double jabbed
Work from home
Don't really go anywhere as I get my shopping delivered (always have even in pre-Covid times)
Tested positive on Friday as my DD caught it at school and then passed it to other DD, DS and now me. Will continue to avoid crowded places even after this and wear my mask when I see fit. I'm more than happy just seeing a few friends in the garden - we now have a sheltered area so it doesn't matter about the weather

NannyAndJohn · 10/07/2021 23:12

I will continue to keep 2m distance, wear a mask, and am now limiting myself to essential trips out only.

Even if we're protected by the vaccine, it's still our duty to reduce the risk for the CEV and children.

pyjamams13 · 10/07/2021 23:23

Yup
Double jabbed. Not worried in the slightest, never was in the first place though. got double jabbed as thought would need it to go on holiday but has being pointless.

dotfot · 11/07/2021 01:07

I feel perfectly safe, but as a few others have said, I was never very concerned - my family and I have always been statistically in the categories least likely to be affected badly. I'm not interested in going to pubs or nightclubs but we go to the theatre a lot and have a lot of shows booked for the rest of the year, and we'll be using public transport a lot (which we have done since June last year). Lots of other indoor activities planned with my dc too - we've been to soft play, toddler groups, museums whenever they've been open. My priority has always been keeping her stimulated and happy, she goes to nursery although I wfh. I won't continue to wear a mask when restrictions relax unless the actual venue requests it, and I only use sanitiser before eating or if some place has requested it. I don't know anyone who has had Covid badly.

We've switched to getting our shopping delivered but mainly because it's far more convenient (I can't understand those who are actually anxious about getting yet still continue to visit supermarkets, it's very easy to get slots now).

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 11/07/2021 01:15

Bollocks I've just tested positive :( double jabbed with AZ. I think Pfizer is a lot better against these new variants. When will this ever end ?

BogRollBOGOF · 11/07/2021 07:49

I've been ready for real normality for over a year now (with grudging acceptance of the winter)

I'm beyond fed-up at wasting my health and "youth" (OK, I hit 40, but it's a good 40 and there isn't indefinite youth ahead!) on heightened paranoia over yet another unpleasant illness to add to flus, and things like campylobacter (that was a bitch!). Plus all the other diseases that can develop and general life-shit

I've lost relatives in their 40s/ 50s, but at least they'd been living to their potential.

I don't take life and good health for granted and believe in making the mo
