Double jabbed - how safe do you feel?

Coverage in the press today about advice to employers being slimmed down - basically it will be up to them to do their own risk assessments and decide on policy in their premises. Also coverage (and a thread already) about Govt plans to make Covid passports compulsory for access to pubs, clubs and restaurants from the Autumn - to encourage take-up of vaccines among the young.

If you are double-jabbed - how safe do you feel and are there things you will still not do?

I am double-jabbed on top of having had Covid. I am happy to meet with small groups of people indoors, but keeping a reasonable distance. I will continue to avoid crowded and cramped places, and to wear a mask on public transport and in shops. The mask is more to protect others in the unlikely event that I am infected.

My logic is that Covid has more chance of overcoming my immunity if I’m exposed to a lot of it all at once, e.g. the crowded stuffy indoor setting, so that is to be avoided. Whereas a ‘glancing blow’ of Covid from a short exposure is unlikely to overcome my immunity. If anything, it will remind my immune system of who the enemy is, and strengthen it.

I felt immensely relieved and much safer after my second jab, but at the time I had no choice other than to teach groups of adults (that changed on a weekly basis) in rooms where distancing was impossible and I wasn’t able to require them to wear masks (though, bless them, they did anyway, to protect me - late 60s).
Everywhere else still seems safer than that workplace.

HideousKinky · 10/07/2021 16:48

I feel safe most of the time but once a week I volunteer in a place where I am amongst 500+ people but we are required to wear masks, visors, social distancing etc. Even there I feel pretty OK

Wakeupin2022 · 10/07/2021 16:50

I have seen a lot of nastiness around those of us who may continue to wear masks so I can understand pps concern.

It seems it's all just virtue signalling......

It's almost as if those who don't want to wear them feel threatened. I don't give a flying feck what anyone else does. Wear a mask, don't, its really none of my business.

Fwiw I don't think there will be much of an issue in real life. Social media and forums like this can be vile places and we truly see the worst in people.

Tbh I’ve seen just as much vitriol in the other direction

Really OTT stuff

We weren’t this bad last year when it was optional. People seem more anxious

Irl I think it’ll be fine

Wakeupin2022 · 10/07/2021 16:54

Yes there has been nastiness the other way too.

And some of the comments you see on here are ridiculous.

But really it seems at times there is no middle ground anymore.

HelloMissus · 10/07/2021 16:55

I’ve literally not had anyone say a peep to me about wearing a mask.
But the one time I let my foster child lift theirs to sip water on the train, some bloke jumped at us, shouting.
I told him to shout at my husband who was in the loo. Funnily enough he took one look and got off at the next stop.

I don't think that's true in real life. At least I hope it's not. I won't be wearing a mask once it's no longer mandatory, but I couldn't care less if anyone else does. I expect most people feel the same way. I guess we'll soon find out. MN can be very polarising - I suppose it's the nature of forums like these.

I'm not feeling safe at all. I have had both AstraZeneca vaccines but it still scares me. A colleague from work has caught it, had both vaccines and has been quite ill for the last week.

JustMeAndWheatley · 10/07/2021 17:08

Not worried at all.

RocioMartinez · 10/07/2021 17:17

Safer - but I am getting monthly antibody tests and it was only the third month after the second jab that I showed as having any antibodies.

BellaMontana · 10/07/2021 17:38

I feel safe just a little bit worried about long covid , apparently the vaccine doesn’t really protect you against that . I’ve never been very scared as I’m not vulnerable but I’ve followed every single rule since day one to protect others.
I’m looking forward to a normal life again , it’s not good for your mental or physical health to isolate . Think this is the peak and then cases will start to go down , think they call it hybrid immunity or something like that now instead of herd immunity ( sorry can’t provide a link ) .
I understand that some people are worried if they have reason to believe the vaccine is not helping them . That must be incredibly hard and hopefully things will get better and easier for you over time ❤️, there’s so much research going on . But life has to go back to normal now for the rest of us ,especially for kids .

Gingercatz · 10/07/2021 17:43

Not bothered. Had Covid last year and it was very mild. Been double jabbed for months now. Just got over a nasty flu thing which has been horrible.

LibbyL92 · 10/07/2021 17:59

I’m doubled jabbed. Have been since 22nd May.

I went to a music festival on the weekend of 19th June. Download festival. It was a government pilot to see how Covid spreads without any social distancing.

I was in a crowd of 10k watching live music. Sharing drinks, hugging, kissing, sharing cigarettes, for 3 days straight.

I lived the weekend how I would of pre Covid. It was like Covid never existed.

I had to be tested 5 days after the festival, and I came back negative. I went with and met around 30 people, not one of us caught Covid.

Majority of us were double jabbed.

Kinda proves it’s incredibly safe.

Rabblesthecat · 10/07/2021 18:53

I still say and have all a long that if this had happened in the 80s and before 24 hour news and social media, it would have gone down as a bad year for the flu and no lockdowns would have happened

But social media talks and 34 hour news has time to fill

Rabblesthecat · 10/07/2021 18:53

24 hour news

Sanguinesuzy · 10/07/2021 20:26

Really ? 130,000 extra deaths and just a bad year for flu ? Bollocks.

No chance

We still had the ability to report from hospitals

Delatron · 10/07/2021 20:54

I don’t understand when people say ‘colleague has caught it and been quite ill for the past week’

Why is people being ill scary? Admitted to hospital and in a serious condition is scary. People being ill and in bed for a week is par for the course in life.

Why are we scared of illnesses now? It’s life.

Pootle40 · 10/07/2021 21:05

Didn't feel worried before I was jabbed I have to be honest.

The 80’s managed wall to wall coverage. It wasn’t exactly the dark ages. Of course we would have gone into lockdown. Thatch didn’t care what anyone thought.

Agreed. I’ve been ‘quite ill in bed for a week’ for various illnesses across my lifetime. Flu, tonsillitis, mastitis, nasty viruses. It’s part of life. It’s not a fun part, granted, but it’s a part of life nonetheless. It feels like some people are trying to eradicate all illness.

She wouldn't have locked down Scotland. She would have used it as an opportunity to kill us all off!

Indigopearl · 10/07/2021 21:15

In relation to covid pretty safe. I had a mild case before being jabbed though.

In relation to health in general pretty scared. I would like to have a functioning health system in place in case I catch cancer or have a car accident and I am not at all confident this is the case.

Grinyeah! And the north of England. Particularly Liverpool and those pesky miners!
