If you had to shield but are fully jabbed, how careful are you being?

As someone who shielded for most of last year, I'm finding it really hard to adjust to the new policy which seems to basically be "covid is over, you're on your own" Hmm I suffer terribly with anxiety and am very risk averse, so although I am double jabbed I have no idea how cautious I should be now case numbers are going up so much, and after the Euros they will probably be astronomical. Any other shielding people going through similar, how cautious will you be now?

Covid vaccines do work well in clinically vulnerable

I'm still a bit anxious, but trying not to let it take over my life.

I'm CEV, had my second jab in late April. I can still work from home, but have chosen to go in to my (very quiet, very covid-safe) office on some days just because I'm really aware of the fact that I was becoming really anxious about being out and about again. I will also meet a very small circle of friends for food in restaurants that I feel safe in, and I have been to the cinema. I'm not keen on shops and tend to have as much as I can delivered.

I have teenage DC and I don't want my health to impact their lives any more than it has done already. The eldest 2 had their vaccines early as I'm CEV, so they'll have had their second soon. DH has had both now.

Our holiday this summer is however going to be camping in rural Wales, I'm not feeling brave enough to travel yet.

Posted this on another thread.
I was advised to shield and I did. I have multiple health problems including auto immune disease for which I take immunosuppressive drugs.
I have changed my stance now that I am double vaxxed. While I may not get the best immune response I do have some antibodies. I know this because I do monthly tests for research.
I trust the vaccine to prevent serious illness and while I will still be cautious to some degree I will not shield forever. My life has been restricted enough from illness.

I suspect flu will be a bigger danger to many CEV this winter than covid. There was no flu last year on which to base this year's vaccine so they may not get it right. Flu has always been a risk, with the possibility of pneumonia yet I never "shielded" because of flu.

Ironically I now feel my UK holiday in August will be less safe than if we had gone abroad.

Egghead68 · 09/07/2021 17:11

It’s great news. I would only add the caveat that there is data coming out that the Pfizer vaccine loses efficacy for everyone after around 6 months although not much for serious infections.

BlowDryRat · 09/07/2021 17:14

Not very careful. I wear a facemask when required, practice hand hygiene and give people space when I'm out and about. Other than that, I've been meeting people inside and outside, going to work, hugging my parents etc. I'm taking a train later this evening for a weekend away.

[quote nether]This is the BBC report, but it does not say which groups of CEV these findings cover

That's wonderful news!!!! Thanks for posting @nether & @Egghead68 . Potentially a real game-changer.

I think I need a lie down...

Egghead68 · 09/07/2021 17:18

The vaccine data in CEV people I mean.

Egghead68 · 09/07/2021 17:19

Cross-post @nether!

GenitaliaNotGender · 09/07/2021 17:20

I won't shield again. I'm so fucking done with it and now I just want to be living my life as best I can as it's so fucking restricted anyway. I'm also fucking done with my DH and DCs having to worry about me and having to change their behaviour to protect me.

Obviously I will wear masks and social distance as far as possible whilst living what life I can - I know some others will ditch this now and some others won't and that's up to them. I'm not judging anyone as I think the vast majority of people are as fucking fed up as I am.

I'm also sick to death of seeing people arguing with others about what they will and won't do eg mask wearing. People need to be taking their complaints upwards to MPs/government instead of looking sideways at each other and fighting.

This sideways arguing with each other instead of looking up is exactly what the government want, it's always been their divide and conquer tactic. Fuck it. If I wasn't happy because I thought (for example) people not wearing masks were putting me at risk I would contact my MP etc not fight with Doris down the street and random
Mners Wink I will be emailing my MP (again!) about the lack of financial protection for CEV people.

For myself, I can't live like I lived last year.

HazyDaisy123456 · 09/07/2021 17:32

I have worked part time from home throughout and had just started in the last few weeks to get a bit of a life back meeting friends in gardens or well ventilated rooms, going to outdoor restaurants, days out etc.

But I feel as scared now about 19th July as I did in the first week before the first lockdown.

I have two teens who go out to school and thankfully they are off school for the summer but I do feel nervous, scared and let down by the government.

Sparklingbrook · 09/07/2021 17:33

Adding to this I saw this just

www.gov.uk/government/news/covid-19-vaccines-highly-effective-in-clinical-risk-groups?fbclid=IwAR2vtcio27AF25iOkz0VDispHQKEAEkHa3Z8bvXWKIwmxlunhbD3zTMV4eA

I have a friend who is CEV who will be pleased to read that.

MikeHat · 09/07/2021 17:39

That's very reassuring @Sparklingbrook.

Sparklingbrook · 09/07/2021 17:42

I am still a little puzzled by the blood cancer reports though. Does this mean people are getting a highly effective response after reports they weren't?

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 09/07/2021 17:52

From (patchy) memory, the study that showed that people with blood cancer had an 8-13% protection rate was after one dose of Pfizer. It wasn't peer reviewed (at the time I read it), but it was Kings and.... Imperial?

The reports above appear to concur with that, but the second dose may be taking us (I hope) to much higher levels of protection. Fingers crossed.

SimonJT · 09/07/2021 17:55

I’m not being cautious, I wasn’t the first time around, but I wasn’t aware I should be shielding until January due to not being appropriately recorded at my GP surgery.

I caught covid in February, I did spend a night in hospital, but I recovered quickly. I’m now double jabbed and back doing full contact rugby.

PRabbit · 09/07/2021 18:32

But I feel as scared now about 19th July as I did in the first week before the first lockdown.
Me too. I’m especially afraid for my DC who can’t get vaccinated.

noblegiraffe · 09/07/2021 18:36

Fingers crossed.

Everything crossed for you, Miles :)

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 09/07/2021 18:49

It is bordering on criminal that CEV children are unvaccinated AND made to go to school. That is the BIGGEST scandal of our age imo, & there's plenty of competition for the title.

If there was a clapping hands emoji on here for this, you’d get all of them Flowers
OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/07/2021 23:05

Immunosupressed cev here. I swing between fuckit kamikaze (not really- I'm aware.of my social responsibility) and anxiety. At this precise moment I just want a couple of weeks of non shielding/non isolating freedom.

NotMyCat · 10/07/2021 01:11

@Sparklingbrook blood cancer have posted this today (my blood disorder means I follow them as there isn't a charity for my condition, they're usually really helpful)

If you had to shield but are fully jabbed, how careful are you being?
memberofthewedding · 10/07/2021 02:17

I go out very little anyway (mobility issues) and see few people so Im not doing anything different. I dont have any plans for holidays etc

Wildewoodz · 10/07/2021 02:35

I’m mostly shielding myself again. I have a domestic holiday booked but we can drive there and know the quiet beaches in the area well so we can show the kids fun whilst staying safe, distanced and outdoors. We will do outdoor days out. I won’t lock myself up because inactivity makes one of my conditions worse but I’ll be avoiding indoor mixing and will be staying outdoors and distanced.

Luckily our friends and family understand so we can see them this way. They came up with the idea of wearing a mask to walk through our house to the garden and said they’ll continue doing that.

Wildewoodz · 10/07/2021 02:38

Yes. This is so true. @GenitaliaNotGender.

Sending a supportive virtual pow wow.
