If you had to shield but are fully jabbed, how careful are you being?

As someone who shielded for most of last year, I'm finding it really hard to adjust to the new policy which seems to basically be "covid is over, you're on your own" Hmm I suffer terribly with anxiety and am very risk averse, so although I am double jabbed I have no idea how cautious I should be now case numbers are going up so much, and after the Euros they will probably be astronomical. Any other shielding people going through similar, how cautious will you be now?

Shielding will not come back....it will be down to the individual to make their own decisions.....and I say this as someone who shielded all last year

Then it won't protect people who were previously advised to shield from having to go to work school or the supermarket.

Priority access to supermarket slots will go, shielders will be forced back to spending their days in offices or schools, whilst prevalence - and thus the chances of catching covid - are higher than ever.

Even the Great Barrington Declaration had a "focused protection" point. So even Libertarians weren't suggesting just throwing the most vulnerable to the wolves. [/quote]
I agree....but shielders are already back in the workplace....it’s already job done.
I’m lucky I am still wfh and will be for the rest of the year....I have a good employer....I know everyone is not so lucky

This is absolute rubbish. Im so sick of hearing 'but they will be vulnerable to all illnesses and would need to be living a careful lifestyle anyway'. You need to get your facts right. My mum was immunosuppressed before covid and able to live a totally normal life and go about her everyday life like everybody else. She did not have to modify her life in any way whatsoever. Or live in fear. Covid is a different story. It will 100% kill her. Please stop spreading this misinformation!!!!

Completely agree with you.

They've 'updated' the shielding advice in the sense that it now has today's date at the top.

It's exactly the same, even to using the 17th May in the main text.

(Maybe just an uploading error, but looks really bad!)

Egghead68 · 12/07/2021 20:53

Yes, nothing whatsoever.

Looks like we’ll have to head back to our Covid-y workplaces (if we are not there already) or quit our jobs.

NotMyCat · 12/07/2021 20:56

People keep posting stuff like "I will not socially distance but you're free to make your own choice"

Didn't really think that through did you, how do I distance from you if you insist on not distancing from me?! ConfusedHmm

@Beebityboo

It's just such a minefield with family who want us to go on trips to busy places etc. Any cancelation and I get passive aggressive comments about my "anxiety" and how there's no reason to be worried now I'm fully vaxxed. I was so looking forward to having a normal summer. I had no idea cases would get out of control again like this.
This is exactly how I feel. Robbed of what I'd hoped would be a lovely summer.

Just had a in depth discussion with my ECV DH (we are both ECV) and I'm so stressed about numbers and our teenagers hanging out with large groups of unvaccinated friends.
It's an accident waiting to happen.

He's of the opinion we have been double vaccinated so let's just live now and not worry. He's happy for our teenagers to carry on mixing with friends.

But I'm so scared. I'm a severe asthmatic on maximum steroids and breathing inhalers. I can't breathe normally so I do worry about covid. I don't think people who haven't experienced not being able to breathe really understand the fear.

shewalkslikerihanna · 12/07/2021 22:36

Friend conscientiously shielded.
Stated going out a little bit when shielded were allowed out
Now double jabbed and has booked a cruise

boon · 12/07/2021 22:44

They seem to be looking into this more in the USA. This article talks about some of the immunosuppresant drugs that are linked to low antibodies following vaccination.

DPs consultant told them to be careful of the Delta variant (they have received both AZ doses). So they are mixing only with vaccinated people or immediate family. Not shopping and avoiding crowded areas.

Backofbeyond50 · 12/07/2021 23:11

At the end of the day it doesn't really matter what we Dora's we have dc in school. But dh who was shielding is being fairly sensible. We haven't had much social contact outside of family but had a lovely couple of weekends away in very COVID secure accommodation. Meals out and shopping too

Backofbeyond50 · 12/07/2021 23:12

Glad we got these out of the way before Juky 19th tbh.

HazyDaisy123456 · 14/07/2021 06:09

@boon thats an interesting article and thats how I feel now. As my healthy friends without health issues worlds are expanding after the 19th I feel mine will have to shrink again after Bojo’s latest cock up date this coming Monday.

Bagelsandbrie · 14/07/2021 06:21

I was / am in the clinically extremely vulnerable group and never shielded in the first place. I was careful, kept distance at the supermarket and didn’t go anywhere busy. I don’t work either so that helped and live rurally so exercising without being around others was easy. But I couldn’t stay in the house, my mental health would be in pieces and I have a disabled son (autism) who cannot stay home - needed school / respite etc so it seemed pointless me trying to shield. (I have lupus, Addison’s, asthma, pituitary tumour, take immunosuppressive medication etc).

I’ve now had both jabs and go out and about everywhere. I refuse to put my life on hold. The way I see it my conditions could kill me without covid, I could spend the next year or so of my life living in fear staying home and die anyway. I want to live my life. I’ll still wear a mask and distance as much as I can but I’m not staying at home.

That pretty much sums it up. Thanks @Egghead68

Oblomov21 · 15/07/2021 16:39

What is your health condition?
What are the risks?

Chris Whitty has twice mentioned diabetics in his speeches. Hadn't stopped me, from doing anything! Although I've respectfully obeyed the rules, but not been worried or anxious.

From your posts it does sound like anxiety is more the issue. Have you spoken to your GP about your anxiety?

Oblomov21 · 15/07/2021 16:43

My post is the same as bagelandbrie. I've gone to work 2 days since the start, limited supermarket shopping, because I couldn't even get a sainsbury delivery pass. Angry worn a mask, distanced, been sensible.

Now I'm double jabbed, out and about socialising with friends.

Mickarooni · 15/07/2021 17:04

@Oblomov21 were you in the shielding group? Are you considered to be immune suppressed or immune compromised? If neither of the latter, the vaccine probably worked well for you or as well as other people. It’s CEV people with immune system problems who remain at high risk.

Egghead68 · 15/07/2021 17:52

Not just them. CEV people in general who remain at higher risk, as you are (say) 90% protected relative to your baseline risk, and our baseline risks are massively higher than the general public (10% of a lot is still quite a lot).

There’s also the finding from Israel that the Pfizer vaccine starts wearing off after 6 months (people vaccinated in Jan/Feb, but not later, are the ones ending up in hospital there). As we were vaccinated early (I was vaxed in December) our protection will wear off sooner (those of us that had Pfizer, anyhow).

FourTeaFallOut · 15/07/2021 17:55

We're you in the very first round of vaccines that didn't have the 12 week delay egghead?
