If you had to shield but are fully jabbed, how careful are you being?

As someone who shielded for most of last year, I'm finding it really hard to adjust to the new policy which seems to basically be "covid is over, you're on your own" Hmm I suffer terribly with anxiety and am very risk averse, so although I am double jabbed I have no idea how cautious I should be now case numbers are going up so much, and after the Euros they will probably be astronomical. Any other shielding people going through similar, how cautious will you be now?

Nope, not shielding again.

I've had both vaccines and will take my chances.

Can't keep living like we have been for the last 14 months (or whatever it is now). My mental health is important too, so for that reason I want to get back to normal.

Inthesameboat2 · 10/07/2021 02:43

Just seen post by @GenitaliaNotGender, and I fully agree.

Inthesameboat2 · 10/07/2021 02:54

Forgot to add, I'm CEV and immunosuppressed.

I caught covid19 (badly) in April last year and was ill for ~4 months.

My GP had me recorded wrongly somehow and assured me I was okay to go out, etc, so I slipped through the net until Feb this year (regarding cev lists and associated help).

Due to that I found it impossible to get online shopping slots in my area as you could only get them if you were on the cev list, which (officially) I wasn't, and so I had to go out to the shops on a bi weekly basis, which is where I probably caught it.

Luckily, other than food shopping I didn't go anywhere else, so I was kind of shielding, I guess.

@Beebityboo

It's just such a minefield with family who want us to go on trips to busy places etc. Any cancelation and I get passive aggressive comments about my "anxiety" and how there's no reason to be worried now I'm fully vaxxed. I was so looking forward to having a normal summer. I had no idea cases would get out of control again like this.
@Beebityboo you do you. Not quite the same as I’m a fit and healthy 28 year old but I’m third trimester pregnant and haven’t had both jabs yet.

I get the same passive aggressive comments when I cancel plans when rates spike and I’ve had to be very frank with family and friends who seem to say “it’s fine though” . Just because they feel they are safe to be around doesn’t mean it necessarily is

I’m not trying to scaremonger you as you seem (understandably!) anxious about this already but I do think you have to stick to your guns and make a risk based decision for each time you’re going out somewhere.
As long as you’re not using it as an excuse for not seeing certain people you don’t like (not suggesting you are!) and you’re consistent with your reasoning/ criteria for cancelling plans, I don’t think you’re being unreasonable at all!

The govt seem to have forgotten to give any advice to CV, CEV, or pregnant people, and pass the burden onto us to make our own decisions so they can’t be held accountable if they’ve got it wrong. That in itself is enough for me to continue being super careful x

I'm CEV, I only got my letter in March this year, I'm housebound due to disability so it doesn't make much difference to me. Ds is currently waiting for a PCR test as he has symptoms, he has volunteered to quarantine in his room, I send his meals up on the stairlift, he collects them & sends his pots back down. We are all double jabbed but a couple of students at his sixth form were stupid enough to come in to school after testing positive & the whole sixth form have been sent home, gradually more & more are having symptoms & testing positive.

Gingerkittykat · 10/07/2021 05:00

I am in an area of Scotland where the cases are the highest in Europe, one town near me had a rate of over 1500 per 100000, another over 1000 and my own village is around 400.

I'm double jabbed and now have no idea how cautious I need to be. I've cut out swimming because I think that even with restrictions it is quite risky. Otherwise I plan to stay away from crowds.

I am lucky I can WFH for now but once the autumn comes I will need to make some difficult decisions.

Iamaperiwinkle · 10/07/2021 05:46

@hopeishere

I've never really understood "bring back shielding". If you want to and need to shield you are free to do so. It's not and never was mandatory. Is there any advantage to "official" shielding?

DH is super vulnerable and careful anyway.

I was on the EVc list and shielding for 14 weeks. No shielding . Double jabbed and back in work - I’m in long term steroids which compromises my immune system - absolutely suck all for me - no shielding exists I can be as careful as I like but with three kids all in school I’m buggered
Bubblemonkey · 10/07/2021 12:04

I’m past giving a shit 🙃

nether · 11/07/2021 23:40

The PHE press release on which the BBC and Guardian reporting was based has now been amended to make it clear that immune compromised people may not respond well to the vaccine.

But a journalists have already covered the story, before the later amendment, its likely a lot of people will have the wrong impression.

MRex · 12/07/2021 07:22

There are tables in the preprint linked here that shows vaccine effectiveness by vaccine and by CEV condition: www.pulsetoday.co.uk/news/coronavirus/covid-vaccines-74-effective-in-immunosuppressed-after-second-dose/.
Might be useful for individuals judging their risk levels.

Kitkat151 · 12/07/2021 07:48

@PrincessNutNuts

Surely they'll have to bring Shielding back if they are going to allow more cases than we've ever seen before?

It's about to be much more dangerous for people who were advised to shield than at any previous point in the pandemic.

Shielding will not come back....it will be down to the individual to make their own decisions.....and I say this as someone who shielded all last year
Egghead68 · 12/07/2021 08:27

Tom Newton Dunn hinted on Twitter they will bring shielding back in some form. It’s only ever been advisory (personal choice) though.

Egghead68 · 12/07/2021 08:28

It can’t just be left down to the individual as we will need legal protection from having to go into the workplace if we are to shield.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/07/2021 15:56

I get very frustrated by the way people imply that shielding is a lifestyle choice.

nether · 12/07/2021 16:02

Shielding really isnt a free choice. He's mentioned there is going to be new guidance, but yet again it's not been announced with the main announcement. Poor show.

And I hope the population at large realises just how much is being asked of the most vulnerable (remember, shielding isn't an age related category and nor are those asked to shield decrepit or terminal) and that all those things about restriction that are harmful, including to MH issues, will still apply to millions of people (including about 100,000 children)

Egghead68 · 12/07/2021 16:05

I certainly don’t mean to imply that at all. It doesn’t feel like a choice to me. However the government (while sending us scary texts/emails/letters) have always said that technically it is advisory not compulsory.

I too have had several people say to me it’s a choice and that I should be back in the workplace (during shielding). Fuck’em. They are no longer friends.

PrincessNutNuts · 12/07/2021 16:05

@Kitkat151

Shielding will not come back....it will be down to the individual to make their own decisions.....and I say this as someone who shielded all last year

Then it won't protect people who were previously advised to shield from having to go to work school or the supermarket.

Priority access to supermarket slots will go, shielders will be forced back to spending their days in offices or schools, whilst prevalence - and thus the chances of catching covid - are higher than ever.

Even the Great Barrington Declaration had a "focused protection" point. So even Libertarians weren't suggesting just throwing the most vulnerable to the wolves.

Egghead68 · 12/07/2021 16:08

Priority access to supermarkets technically went on June 21 I think.

nether · 12/07/2021 16:13

I think they need a 'masked only' hour in supermarkets tbh, and masks in pharmacies too.

New guidance for the CEV will be issued today.

As has been pointed out in The House, 'freedom day' is anything but for the vulnerable. Employment support and income protection for the CEV whose workplaces are not sufficiently covid secure, and online supermarket slot priority needs to be maintained. It'll still be pretty grim, so I hope there will also be priority access to MH services.

FourTeaFallOut · 12/07/2021 17:51

Oh, here we go again. Another round of headlines with "cev told to do this" making out like we are living under a different fucking law to everyone else.

Egghead68 · 12/07/2021 17:53

How the fuck are we supposed to know who is unvaccinated so we can avoid them?

There’d better at least be an ongoing recommendation to wfh if you can.

nether · 12/07/2021 17:59

Despite weeding out some from the list earlier in the year, I see that the total has now risen to 3.5 million people classed as CEV

As Whitty said, they evaluated a number of models and there wasn't that much difference. So any of these which don't have a cliff edge at a time when cases are already rising so sharply (doubling every 9 days, I think Vallence said) could well mean a considerably better quality of life for the very vulnerable.

Relying on people tomdo the right thing is not going to be as effective as telling them they damned well must

FourTeaFallOut · 12/07/2021 18:37

Vaping is bogging. Especially when you find yourself caught in a sickly bubblegum cloud. But it's no more a covid risk than, say, singing. Just shop elsewhere.
