Half vaxxed friends getting Delta

Porridgeislife · 05/07/2021 14:57

Has anyone had a notable uptick in friends getting Delta over the last week? I’ve now got 4 friends infected - one very sick (full week off work), two a bit under the weather and one only found out due to a PCR for foreign travel.

We are all mid to late 30s so half vaxxed with Pfizer or Moderna. One has a fully vaxxed mother & husband who haven't been infected whilst her unvaccinated young children have. All working from home and have been for 15 months.

I’ve been quite relaxed about Covid and just taking the usual masks, hands, space precautions suggested by the government (given my age) plus got vaccinated as soon as allowed. However throughout it all, I’ve never had so many friends sick at once - it seems Delta is much, much more contagious?

If I’m honest, I don’t know anyone personally who has received a positive test recently. I live in one of the ‘hot spots’ too.

givemushypeasachance · 05/07/2021 15:02

I indirectly (via people on my small work team) heard of two of their relatives who are fully vaccinated and tested posted last week, plus a half vaccinated positive. It was a bit close to home after not really know anyone who'd had it before with a positive PCR, just the early days of matching symptoms but couldn't get tests.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 05/07/2021 15:03

I don't know anyone who has it.

changingstages · 05/07/2021 15:05

Yes, it's quite... well, not weird, because we know there's an increase in cases, but I know more people now sick at the same time than at any other point during this whole thing.

I know seven people - three work colleagues and four friends. All have had at least one vaccination and one of the work colleagues is double vaxxed (Pfizer).

The double vaxxed colleague was very unwell so although that was a bit scary I guess it's good in a way as presumably he would have been even more unwell without the vaccination.

One friend has just been admitted to hospital, I'm not sure how she is, just waiting for an update from her husband. That's quite frightening as she's very fit and not old (39).

The others were all mildly unwell to varying degrees.

Panicmode1 · 05/07/2021 15:05

Three of my (double jabbed) friends have tested positive in the past week......having had AZ. I was feeling a bit more relaxed as it has been 3 weeks since my second jab, but am being a lot more rigorous about social distancing etc and paying that my children don't catch it I the last 2 weeks of term....!

Panicmode1 · 05/07/2021 15:06

Praying...paying for them to get it would be odd!

INeedNewShoes · 05/07/2021 15:07

I know 6 people who have/had it within the past week or so. 4 out of 6 are double vaccinated. Although no one has required hospital treatment it has still made them feel very unwell.

I certainly still feel wary of catching it, even after 2 jabs.

This is also the first time I've known more than one household at once with it.

That’s a good way to describe it. We’re in London so I guess about 50% of people I know have had it at some point in the last year, but never so many at once.

I also know quite a few people in the same situation. I’m surprised how many people aren’t aware that you can still catch it - even after the double vaccination. I have heard “I have a cough but I’m double vaccinated so it can’t be Covid” a couple of times, it’s worrying

IDidntFloatUpTheLaganInABubble · 05/07/2021 15:19

I'm double jabbed (AZ mid 40s) and have been off work for 4 days with it after testing positive 10 days after my second jab. Lots of symptoms, the latest one being tinnitus.

MikeHat · 05/07/2021 15:22

My DS is a teacher and most of his friends are teachers. Majority are half vaxxed and more of them have it now than at any time since it started. None seriously ill thankfully.

Paddling654 · 05/07/2021 15:22

Yes it's much more contagious and carries a greater risk of hospitalisation. Surely you and your friends picked up on this in the news?

I find it sad that anyone would become really ill when a few more weeks would see you fully vaccinated and less likely to suffer.

That is worrying. We still need to be a bit careful. I'm in a delta hotspot and several friends have caught it recently (all had only the first dose of vaccination, AZ I think). Hopefully the school year ending soon will reduce numbers a bit...
TheOrigRights · 05/07/2021 15:23

Well yes, I think we all know that this is the case.

Dustyboots · 05/07/2021 15:26

This mentality strikes me as brainwashed.

Sorry - whoever posted it. I"m not attacking you. I've read it so many times and it seems such a nonsense. It's a way of pacifying ourselves.

traumatisednoodle · 05/07/2021 15:26

DB has tested positive today he had second AZ 9 days ago. So far very minimal symptoms.

mumwon · 05/07/2021 15:28

OK ds has caught it with some of his friends (all double vaxxed ds AZ) apparently (emoji of raising eyes to heaven & waiting till he feels better so I can say what I think) they went to the pub to watch the first England game (they live in London) - he says he feels a bit better -thank goodness.
The vax doesn't stop you getting covid but, cross fingers, it stops you getting really ill.
This shows you how contagious it is & watching Wimbledon crowds - I keep thinking insanity especially because of Boris announcement
today
Personally - we will continue to be careful & wear mask

This is being reported in quite a few places at the moment.

Foobydoo · 05/07/2021 15:30

I know loads at the moment. The majority have had a least one jab and several fully jabbed.
I've never known it as bad as this. Around half are feeling pretty ill but not bad enough for hospital.
Im in the North west.

mumwon · 05/07/2021 15:31

@Dustyboots lower number of deaths & hospitalization! & because of ds health history he would have been a bit more vulnerable

brainwashed my ass, it's how the vaccine works

On average, a person will experience a lower severity of symptoms once vaccinated. Of course for a certain % there's vaccine failure where you don't get any protection - but that's rare and tends to occur in older folk and those who are immunosuppressed

OliveTree75 · 05/07/2021 15:36

I know loads atm, probably the most at once since this all started. Most are kids though. 3 mid 30s adults have had one vaccine, still symptomatic but quite mildly so. One colleague double jabbed feels like she has a chest infection.

I agree.

It’s all you ever hear when someone who is double vaccinated gets ill. Either that or “well they could have died without the vaccine” (heard that twice in RL).

ollyollyoxenfree · 05/07/2021 15:40

to answer OPs question yes I know quite a few, fortunately no one with severe symptoms

I've had one jab and after getting trapped in a football mob on Saturday (lot's of beery breath and chanting), I wouldn't be at all surprised if I'm shortly to follow!

Thisisthemonth · 05/07/2021 15:41

im in a big organisation and we've had as many colleagues off in the last 3 weeks as we have had over the previous 6 months (North east)
