Half vaxxed friends getting Delta

Porridgeislife · 05/07/2021 14:57

Has anyone had a notable uptick in friends getting Delta over the last week? I’ve now got 4 friends infected - one very sick (full week off work), two a bit under the weather and one only found out due to a PCR for foreign travel.

We are all mid to late 30s so half vaxxed with Pfizer or Moderna. One has a fully vaxxed mother & husband who haven't been infected whilst her unvaccinated young children have. All working from home and have been for 15 months.

I’ve been quite relaxed about Covid and just taking the usual masks, hands, space precautions suggested by the government (given my age) plus got vaccinated as soon as allowed. However throughout it all, I’ve never had so many friends sick at once - it seems Delta is much, much more contagious?

@Odisia @mumwon Living in South and working in Central (so colleagues are from all over), mainly people in their 20s/early 30s so half vaxxed. Other than people I directly know, the apps been pinging people all over the place too when it’s been quiet up to now so hardly a weekend goes by without plans being cancelled due to people isolating.

Daisy829 · 05/07/2021 16:11

Yes lots in the last month or so. It’s everywhere where I am. Fortunately nobody has been really poorly.

UpSlyDown · 05/07/2021 16:13

We have been in a high risk area throughout but only recently have I actually known anyone whos had covid but now its loads! Teachers, almost whole school closed due to bubbles being sent home, friends testing positive. Thank goodness no one is unwell (whether vaccination, half or not at all) but its a bit crazy! Does feel a bit 'whizzing through the whole school' right now.

Odisia · 05/07/2021 16:15

Mumwon I'm in South London but have friends all over and who work in the centre.

mumwon · 05/07/2021 16:18

@milinhas ditto ds his friends all live in London (ds was vaxxed a bit early because of childhood lung health history - he wouldn't have been given AZ if he had been vaccinated later because of his age)
I wish we lived nearer

tallduckandhandsome · 05/07/2021 16:18

Yes, I know two under 40s who were half-vaxxed and got the Delta variant.

I'm half vaxxed too and have massively stepped up by hand washing and mask wearing.

My mum is fullx vaxxed but gone back to shielding as Covid would be lethal for her and she managed it to avoid it by sheilding for a year. It's a blow for her.

mumwon · 05/07/2021 16:19

@Odias doh! I meant to send previous comment to you

BarbarianMum · 05/07/2021 16:22

@Dustyboots ??? Dont you think the whole reason we are seeing a huge uptick in infections without a huge uptick in deaths is precisely because the vaccine is doing exactly that? How else would you explain it?

WaterBottle123 · 05/07/2021 16:24

Positive tests here but no one really ill.
I think you perception of the situation largely depends on how much you want lockdown to end. Some folks like lockdown so have tuned their brains to filter in negative news. Some folks don't like lockdown so filter in the vaccines breaking the link between infections and death.

COVID ending is scary for some, but whether we like it or not it is time to learn to live with the virus.

galaxyfairy · 05/07/2021 16:27

I know more people than usual too. I honestly think it's spreading so quickly because so many people are half-vaxxed and believe they can't get it anymore so they don't bother checking. Which is pretty scary to think about!

changingstages · 05/07/2021 16:28

@Dustyboots

The double vaxxed colleague was very unwell so although that was a bit scary I guess it's good in a way as presumably he would have been even more unwell without the vaccination.

This mentality strikes me as brainwashed.

Sorry - whoever posted it. I"m not attacking you. I've read it so many times and it seems such a nonsense. It's a way of pacifying ourselves.

oh I am DEFINITELY pacifying myself! I just felt so very worried at how ill he was and then thought, well, perhaps if he hadn't been vaccinated it would have been so much worse so it's doing its job? I am keen to believe that you'd be less ill, because I'm double vaccinated and I'd really like to not get extremely ill.
MoreHairyThanScary · 05/07/2021 16:30

I know of 2 double vaxed people tested positive this week and 5 children in DC's school resulting in about 400 others self isolating! school is enormous and for its size has had very few cases since the start so this feels huge.

I don't think this is the right time to drop masks!

Picklesbaby · 05/07/2021 16:31

It’s the worst it’s been in my area since the pandemic started. Nearly all School Years are managing days in before going off for 10 days again. The full Nursery shut last week for 10 days . half of us off work isolating.
less people seriously unwell/dying than just before Christmas though thankfully

cabinetofgits · 05/07/2021 16:32

So the announcement tonight about mask-burning and nightclubs and crowded bars is VERY badly timed.

Especially with hundreds of thousands of 'not at risk' school pupils locked in their houses to protect people who are now free to drink in bars and chuck out their masks.

While people with one vaccine are getting quite ill still.

But still JCVI won't green-light vaccinating under-18s, despite the transmission and variant-risk of this reservoir of infection. But oh well, let's just lock them all up at home so the adults can go drinking and on holiday.

I don't believe that Covid ENDING is scary for anyone. I just think this 'lockdown lover' narrative is absolute rubbish. Who loves lockdown? It's absolutely fucking horrible. So I'd really prefer not to have another one.
ICECream821 · 05/07/2021 16:37

Not known so many people with Covid. It’s another ball game. Have a family friend with 4 kids all have it and double vaccinated parents have both got it. Friend is GP and said initially mild but not now. Feeling very rough!

Zilla1 · 05/07/2021 16:37

@ollyollyoxenfree I suspect they have learned one thing, to ask the question they asked the new Health secretary before finalising their appointment after the entirely unconnected political execution of the incumbent.

SecretKeeper1 · 05/07/2021 16:37

I know more people with it this week than throughout the whole pandemic. 3 of them are double vaxxed (strangely, all Pfizer) the rest have had 1 jab, plus there are a handful of kids. It’s definitely spreading through households more now, too.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 05/07/2021 16:38

How do you find out what variant you have? Just wondering as my DS has covid (no symptoms at all but positive lateral and PCR tests) but we weren't told whether its the delta version or otherwise.

Keepgoing88 · 05/07/2021 16:38

Me and my Hubby are examples of this altho I don’t know anyone else with it at the moment other that the person we caught it off who doesn’t seem to have given to anyone else but us! I actually had my second jab a few days before testing positive and my husband had his literally 2 days before testing positive :s!! Both late thirties / early 40’s. Not sure if it makes any difference but I had Pzifer whereas he has AZ … he feels awful whereas I feel fine ! Also his lateral flow tests are so dark whereas mine are all negative despite positive PCRS on the same day

Keepgoing88 · 05/07/2021 16:39

Should also say we all have it in a household of 5 apart from the youngest altho he’s the only one who hasn’t done a test as he has had no symptoms so he could well have it

TheVanguardSix · 05/07/2021 16:40

I too am in London. DDs primary year has just come out of isolation and gone back to school, but it's still popping up like popcorn in her class (those kids who are still positive or just testing positive just haven't come back to school, so classes remain small- 3 form entry). Entire families have it. My dear friend down the road and her whole family have it. My neighbour up the road was hospitalised last week (double vaxxed). It's funny because I went home to the States at the very end of April and did not feel anxious at all about Covid (unvaccinated at that time). I felt very confident with my PCR tests and empty flight (you could only go home as an American citizen for a 'life or death' situation).
I've been invited to Maine this summer. Would LOVE to go, but I feel much more concerned about the high risk of bringing this variant home to the States with me... to a very small island, I might add. I mean, I'd feel like the Tour de France placard lady. I'd never be invited back if I brought them the gift of the Delta variant!

Katie517 · 05/07/2021 16:40

@changingstages plenty of people love lockdown, they enjoy being told what to do and love the opportunity to virtue signal to anyone who even dares believe that our response to covid has been an over reaction. It’s like a religious cult to some people and it’s rife on here! They are usually people that had very little going on in their lives pre covid and get some sort of enjoyment seeing others forced to live the way they do!

For what it’s worth I haven’t heard of any one with covid in this “wave” and non of our local schools have had bubbles close over the last month or so (south midlands with below average case rates and high vaccine take up)

changingstages · 05/07/2021 16:40

@BabyDubsEverywhere

I think it's just assumed to be Delta now as that's the dominant strain in the UK.
RuthW · 05/07/2021 16:40

I know a few double vaxxed that have it.
