Half vaxxed friends getting Delta

312 replies

Porridgeislife · 05/07/2021 14:57

Has anyone had a notable uptick in friends getting Delta over the last week? I’ve now got 4 friends infected - one very sick (full week off work), two a bit under the weather and one only found out due to a PCR for foreign travel.

We are all mid to late 30s so half vaxxed with Pfizer or Moderna. One has a fully vaxxed mother & husband who haven't been infected whilst her unvaccinated young children have. All working from home and have been for 15 months.

I’ve been quite relaxed about Covid and just taking the usual masks, hands, space precautions suggested by the government (given my age) plus got vaccinated as soon as allowed. However throughout it all, I’ve never had so many friends sick at once - it seems Delta is much, much more contagious?

The vaccines don't stop you getting the virus and we're all doing a lot more testing.i hope your friend who is very sick is better soon.

@ollyollyoxenfree crosspost Grin & much better (blunter!) put - Delta (or whatever) is another variant & variety of variants (!) are increasing with number of people infected - nb when we have flu jab each year it vaccinates against 3 or 4 possible flu variants usually based on the Southern winter outbreaks from flu but other variants can take off & flu vaccines do not work as well (this happened a few years ago -30%?I think) the flu jab is now configured differently (3 variety jabs plus adjunctive addition to make it work better for older people). Yes I know its flu & not covid but the vaccine protects in the same way & flu variants occur

It's not peer reviewed yet but this is positive on Lambda,

Yes there has been a bit of an outbreak here lately. One friend 50 tested positive a week ago after having 2nd jab 18 June. Second friend, similar age so I think probably similar timing. Daughter just tested positive after having first jab 4th June. All a bit unwell but not seriously. Nobody ever said the vaccinations would stop all infections or illness. And none of these people had reached peak immunity yet (takes 3 weeks after 2nd jab? or thereabouts?)

OliveTree75 · 05/07/2021 15:44

@Thisisthemonth

im in a big organisation and we've had as many colleagues off in the last 3 weeks as we have had over the previous 6 months (North east)
Yeah I am North East too. It seems quite rife here atm
PSSN · 05/07/2021 15:46

I have had one AZ vaccine and tested positive 3 weeks ago. I have been very unwell and still struggling now. My husband and kids also had it.

HarrietOh · 05/07/2021 15:46

Newcastle currently has the highest rates in the country.

Orchidflower1 · 05/07/2021 15:47

It’s crazy isn’t it to think that in two weeks time masks may no longer be a legal requirement! Stupid idea!

NaToth · 05/07/2021 15:47

I live in a major city and haven't heard of anyone getting any variant of COVID since January.

Grin

yes exactly!

TheOrigRights · 05/07/2021 15:48

@Dustyboots

The double vaxxed colleague was very unwell so although that was a bit scary I guess it's good in a way as presumably he would have been even more unwell without the vaccination.

This mentality strikes me as brainwashed.

Sorry - whoever posted it. I"m not attacking you. I've read it so many times and it seems such a nonsense. It's a way of pacifying ourselves.

What do you mean?

Being vaccinated helps keep you from getting seriously ill even if you do get covid.

irregularegular · 05/07/2021 15:48

“well they could have died without the vaccine”

What makes you think that isn't true? My daughter is currently slightly unwell after a positive Covid test. Obviously we are trying to quarantine her as much as possible. But as my 60 year old husband pointed out, it is MUCH less worrying than it would have been a year ago. Maybe he will still become infected, but it is far, far less likely to become seriously ill. A year ago he would have been quite high risk.

Orf1abc · 05/07/2021 15:49

In summary, we've got a new mutation that the vaccine may not be effective against, so the government is removing all mitigations.

It's like they've not learned a thing.

milinhas · 05/07/2021 15:49

Absolutely loads of people getting it that I know in London when I haven’t really known that many have it previously. The thought of masks being made non compulsory on poorly ventilated and busy public transport just as everyone goes back to work is frankly insane.

Odisia · 05/07/2021 15:50

I live in London. I've only heard of 1 person having covid in the last 6 months.

Odisia · 05/07/2021 15:51

Milinhas I posted before I saw your post. It's interesting that we are both in London but have such different experiences.

XiCi · 05/07/2021 15:52

Yes it's absolutely raging through our primary school. 5 year groups off and parents and siblings all affected as well. Another local primary is completely shut. My nephew and his mum currently have it as do a couple of friends both of whom wfh. Seems so rife at the moment. The children are getting ill from it as well which didn't seem to be the case with the other variants.

it's as the government has learnt nothing in the last 18 months

I know the current restrictions are impacting people & businesses, and extending them isn't to be taken lightly, but the repercussions of letting it get out of control will be another national lockdown which will be so much more damaging. We don't have enough people double vaxxed yet.

mumwon · 05/07/2021 15:57

@Odias & @Milinhas
what part of London & what age group (mixing more likely in younger & under 40 )
Ds lives S London

Lizzie523 · 05/07/2021 15:58

Yes 22 year old colleague off work with covid for a week months after getting the vaccine. Just starting to feel better now but no sense of taste still

emmathedilemma · 05/07/2021 15:59

Yes, quite a few in the last couple of weeks. That said, our case numbers locally are higher than they've been at any point in the pandemic!

mumwon · 05/07/2021 16:00

@NaToth YET!

HelloMissus · 05/07/2021 16:01

I know quite a few who have tested positive recently. 2 double vaccinated, two who had one jab.
Mixture of severity, from in bed with stinking cold to no symptoms. No one needed a doctor etc.
Then I also know my DD who tested negative twice after sharing a bed and water bottle with one of those people (before they found out obviously).

Thankfully that isn't the case in my experience with children atm. I know 5 kids who have it now and they either have no symptoms at all or very mild ones.
OldTurtleNewShell · 05/07/2021 16:04

Yes, definitely seeing an uptick IRL. No one seems to be in life threatening way, thank goodness, but definitely seeing younger people who've just been jabbed or only had one getting quite ill.
I think if the jabs weren't in place for so many, we'd be in a bad way.
