I wondered if it was worth keeping a list of which cos are keeping masks? So that we can use/avoid depending on preference?

Eg, Ryanair are keeping them as mandatory

Absolutely agree FoolShapeHeart, i work not only in retail, but clean for 3 elderly people who are there when i am.. its not easy hoovering and cleaning showers in a mask for 6 hours a day, but its not going to kill me.. however if they catch anything from me, its a possibilty.
Thats the bottom line.

I don’t understand why people get so arsey about it! If you feel safer wearing one, wear it just don’t expect everyone else to feel the same. I for one can’t wait to ditch the bloody thing. This pandemic has brought the worst out of people so much judgement and vitriol, you do you!

I think retail staff have a right to be a bit arsey if they are suddenly surrounded by people without masks all day every day. They don't have much choice in that do they?

I just think ‘you do you’ doesn’t work when you are part of a society. Or shouldn’t anyway.

Sparklingbrook · 09/07/2021 22:38

'You do you' just means 'do what you like I don't give a shit' doesn't it? All over MN like expression of the moment. Along with 'let it rip'.

If you refuse to wear a mask once the plane has taken off are they going to throw you off?

What I don't understand is that according to MN, nobody wears a mask anyway. Since last July the Coronavirus board has been full of posts berating the public as selfish superspreaders for not wearing them. So why is everyone so up in arms now?

What's been happening is the aircraft calls ahead to the authorities on the ground and then when you land they remove you first to process any fines etc according to the T&C. If you have a return journey booked with the same airline they can cancel it. Obviously mask refusal tends to happen before the plane takes off so they just have you removed then.

Nightclubs, birthday parties, religious services, choir practice, smoking clubs, popular restaurants, pubs, indoor sport fixtures, indoor music performances, crowded public transport --

I don't understand people fretting about sodding "masks in shops" when all of the above will return to BAU. All sense about relative risk has gone.

CataclysmicVariable · 10/07/2021 11:48

Probably because those things are optional, or more easily avoided, than shops and workplaces. I would love my workplace to do away with masks but it probably won’t and I’m a conformist. I am CEV but my risk exposure via my husband’s job and children has been high all along so I can’t get too worked up about mitigations for my own sake.

It's ever been thus on here. Whenever exemption comes up some bright spark will always pipe up 'just get your shopping delivered' or 'get a friend to do your shopping', conveniently forgetting all the other things people need to do that have fuck all to do with shopping.
GirlAloud · 10/07/2021 12:16

All U.K. based airlines will retain masks as a compulsory part of their ‘conditions of carriage’ for the foreseeable future. It’s a no-brainer commercial decision for them.

The reasoning is that mask wearing will reassure the majority who are still somewhat concerned about Covid. The vast majority of those who don’t care about Covid will grumble about masks but comply, because that’s what British people do. A tiny minority will refuse to fly if it means wearing a mask, but their numbers are negligible.

I'm exempt from wearing a mask and flying with Ryanair. Had to get a letter from my gp stating my medical conditions that make me exempt. I'm still nervous about it. Hate feeling this way. I fainted 3 times when I tried wearing a mask, so I physically wouldn't be able to. They'd have to throw me off
BoomChicka · 10/07/2021 15:23

I won't be wearing a mask in shops, pubs etc. Mine will be binned so if a venue tried to insist they will have to provide them. I'd choose to spend my money elsewhere than wear a mask though. I've avoided all indoor things like cinema, indoor golf etc. As I can't see a bloody thing with a mask and glasses on, so I wouldn't spend money there either if they choose to keep masks compulsory.

SueSaid · 10/07/2021 18:51

Fainted 3 times? That is very unusual isnt it. People usually faint just the once. Sounds awful though Flowers. I'm not sure I'd want to get on a plane if I had such extreme reactions to things. Have you tried cbt and counselling?

I think she means she tried 3 times and fainted on each occasion.

Sainsburys have already said its personal choice. If tesco doesnt I will do my food shopping at sainsbury's. If theres a mask free option I will most definitely be choosing it!“

Was just looking at another thread where someone was wondering which pubs would attract more custom. I noted that on BBC paper review last night polls apparently indicate an even split with 50% of the public believing the Govt. have got it wrong.
So presumably people will vote with their feet and shop where they are comfortable. Enough customers for each shop. Maybe not a bad outcome. Just a shame the population has to work it out for itself rather than being able to rely on decent leadership.

Tbh the anxiety works both ways. I’m currently a carer for a family member who has recently come out of hospital. She has a hole in her stomach that is packed daily by a district nurse. A section of her bowel has been removed and reconnected, she is incontinent. Internally she is still healing and any reopening in her bowel could be deadly.
I dread to think what would happen if she had even a mild case of Covid. Not only that, but the district nurse visits daily - so if the nurse contracted it from my mum, via me, other vulnerable people could catch it too.

Last week I was trying to buy essential items in a supermarket and a group of loud people, in their twenties, all unmasked, laughing, and not distancing from me - surrounded me as I tried to pay.

So I sat in the car afterwards, sanitised my hands and cried. I really had to get myself back together before heading back.

Why people (except anyone with a medical exemption) refuse to abide by a pretty simple safety measure is completely beyond me.

I hope masks stay in places that vulnerable people need to access.
