Not that I or DS (17) have much of a choice. We live in central London, do not have a car and DS won't be vaccinated till next year.

For me yes as I’ve been vaccinated. I will rethink plans in the holidays with the kids now though.

Pinuporc · 05/07/2021 10:14

There's no reason why we should stop face mask now, it should be continued well in to 2222

I dont think I've seen anyone propose restrictions for the next 200 years before now!Wink
I'm presuming this was a typo but with some of the more cautious posters you can never be too sure.

FWIW I travel by train and they are not especially busy. Half the people, as pp say, have a mask under their chin, hanging from their ear or under their nose. I think I will feel a bit cautious when no one is wearing them anymore but it's the only method I have of getting to work so will have to get on with it.

LizJamIsFab · 05/07/2021 10:15

Yes I’d have no hesitation. My only concern is that I’d have to self isolate and the work/school implications.

Poppins2016 · 05/07/2021 10:33

I wouldn't use the tube with unmasked passengers at the moment (pregnant in third trimester, asthmatic, don't want to increase the risk of illness due to covid)... I don't use the tube regularly, though (only for day trips into London) and it's an easy thing to eliminate.

On the order hand, if it was my only method of transport and I lived in London, I suppose I might have to put up with the risk.

I guess this highlights the pros and cons of a one size fits all approach. Pros: the majority of the population will be vaccinated and will be comfortable with no social distancing or masks. Cons: the minority are put at higher risk (if vulnerable) or have to put up with situations they're uncomfortable with.

Yes people are already not wearing masks in shops etc. Makes no difference if its thr tube.

Only thing id do is carry hand sanitiser cos of the germs on handles etc. But I did that pre covid anyway.

PurpleDaisies · 05/07/2021 10:45

An enclosed carriage with no ventilation and no social distancing is not the same as most shops.

sashagabadon · 05/07/2021 10:51

Yes

LakeShoreD · 05/07/2021 10:51

I’ll personally be quite pleased to not have to wear one on the tube as it’s so hot and stuffy. I was on a main line train late on Saturday night, the carriage was packed and not one person was wearing a mask so clearly a lot of people have already given up.

LindaEllen · 05/07/2021 11:00

Absolutely! You've been risking catching a virus for years by being unmasked on the tube, why should this one - given you've double vaxxed - cause any anxiety?

GreyhoundG1rl · 05/07/2021 11:04

Quite a lot of people already unmasked on the tube...

wintertravel1980 · 05/07/2021 11:12

I know a lot of people who live in zones 1/2 who had taken up cycling to avoid the tube.

Yes, I even tried to be one of them. Last summer I got a fancy electric bike to cycle to the office. On my very first day of the new commute I saw a cyclist who was hit by a car. It was not a bad accident but it made me realise my personal risk of having a serious Covid case is likely to be much lower than of getting injured on a road. I am "fit, athletic and healthy" but I also tend to be clumsy.

I have switched back to public transport for my office commute and am now using my bike over the weekend.

yepitsmey · 05/07/2021 11:14

Many people on the tube during rush hour are already unmasked and I don't blame them. It's July and people REGULARLY faint on the tube when it gets too hot.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 05/07/2021 11:27

I admit that if there’s no one directly opposite me on the tube I regularly take off my mask. It’s hot, I’m pregnant, i want to be able to sip my water.

bluechameleon · 05/07/2021 11:42

I'm a bit anxious about this. I'm starting a new job in September in London and will be using a commuter train, then either two tubes or one tube and a bus. I've felt fine doing this for the interview and visit but I'll be anxious if there are no masks in September.

BigWoollyJumpers · 05/07/2021 11:46

DD tells me pretty much everyone is unmasked in London now. She avoids the tube when possible, but always did even pre-covid, because of claustrophobia and anxiety, and by choice takes an overground, a bus, and walks the last bit. Buses are crowded and mostly unmasked now. But she is back in the office, and very happy to be so.

UnChatNoir · 05/07/2021 11:48

I wouldn't care less really

loulouljh · 05/07/2021 11:51

Yes!

NearlyAlwaysInsane · 05/07/2021 11:52

You do what you do to get to where you need to go.

dreamingbohemian · 05/07/2021 11:57

I disagree that everyone in London is unmasked now. Most people I see on public transport are still wearing masks, though more people are not.

I will probably still wear masks on public transport for a while. I guess I'm a weirdo because it doesn't really bother me.

The transport workers unions are asking the government to maintain masks on public transport for the sake of transport staff, quite a few of whom died last year. Yes yes we have the vaccine now but even if drivers and staff get only mildly ill from covid, absences could really cripple the system.

Jourdain11 · 05/07/2021 12:45

I definitely see a lot of people unmasked (or semi-masked, lol) on the tube. I don't think it will make a lot of difference when the restrictions are lifted.

megletthesecond · 05/07/2021 12:47

Nope.

lop124 · 05/07/2021 13:21

Yes, I'm happy not to wear masks on the Tube. I find them quite annoying in hot weather and I've been vaccinated. I'm not that convinced most of our masks (mine included) are as effective as intended, including disposable masks being worn multiple times, washable ones not being washed etc.

Suranjeep · 05/07/2021 13:39

@PurpleDaisies

Yes people are already not wearing masks in shops etc. Makes no difference if its the tube.

An enclosed carriage with no ventilation and no social distancing is not the same as most shops.

Many sub surface “underground” TfL services are now air coned as much as your local Tesco.

The other deep tube underground TfL services are probably more draughty in the summer than Tesco due to the carriage end windows.

redglobox · 05/07/2021 13:45

I'm much more worried about an accident, fire, terrorist attack than catching covid on the tube.

Remmy123 · 05/07/2021 13:46

Yes of course
