Also, health anxiety doesn’t give you an excuse to be rude to others who don’t share your views. So many on here use it as an excuse to verbally abuse people and it’s vile.

LucilleTheVampireBat · 01/07/2021 15:40

Don't let it get to you Ginandfantalemon. It used to really upset me when I would read the things that were said on here about people who are mask exempt. I have learnt to switch off. They are ruled by either their own irrational fear (which, despite their protestations, is fear for themselves), or they are just the type of people who like to feel morally superior about whatever subject they can latch onto. They will find something else when this is over. Best ignored.

Laughing at the idea a first degree = an expert. I have a degree in English, I barely scratched the surface!

Degree, masters, PhD & significant time in either research or industry and I'll give someone expert status.

And then you hit the tricky problem when the similarly qualified experts don't agree....

Why the constant need for hyperboles?

No one is desperate to stick with masks, but it's very possible to think it's too early to get rid of them. Another winter wouldn't hurt.

No one is talking about "forever" either. It's been a drag, but it's been just a bit more than a year.

The lack of resilience is shocking, no one is talking about banning holidays, going into another lockdown or anything similar. Just keeping masks for a bit longer. No need for so much drama.

I agree. There was a thread recently where some believe it is their right to go up to anyone not wearing a mask and DEMAND to know what their exemption is - using the excuse that its about public health.

I suspect some of those who think berating random people in supermarkets are just natural bullies who have waited their whole lives for this opportunity to have a legitimate reason to abuse others

Why would you be embarrassed? If someone CANNOT wear a mask (and there are many of us), how dare you call us whiney babies. We aren't whining, we literally cant go out with one on. Do you even realise the impact masks have had on some peoples lives. Just because you can tolerate a mask, doesn't mean everyone else can. I personally cant wait until they are not mandatory.[/quote]
Very few people CANNOT wear a face mask.

And they're not the whiney babies I'm referring to.

And if they CANNOT wear a face mask then they're not mandatory for them so the ending of mandatory face masks makes no difference to them.

This thread isn't filled with the medically exempt. I'm confident of it.

WouldBeGood · 01/07/2021 15:49

Whereas I find it weird that people are so invested in what others do.

And how they place their faith in a piece of manky cloth.

Parky04 · 01/07/2021 15:50

@PixelatedLunchbox

Meh. I'll still be wearing mine in crowded places. I normally get the flu and colds every year, but not had anything since April 2020.
But if the majority are no longer wearing masks, you will probably still get flu/colds!

I agree. I barely notice if anyone else is wearing a mask or not. I genuinely just get on with my business and don't really take any notice

Ginandfantalemon (great name btw!) No one I know has any issue with people who can't wear a mask, it's the ones who complain they just don't like them whinging that are the issue. I've never asked someone why they don't wear one(and I wouldn't ever!) because I assume there's a reason I have no business knowing. But when someone is vocal about just not liking it or bragging about how they just lie because they can't be arsed it's completely different.

SirSamuelVimes · 01/07/2021 15:59

Surely trying to avoid catching big standard cold and even flu is going to be a bad thing long term? Isn't that how the immune system is strengthened, through regularly fighting off the milder stuff?

SirSamuelVimes · 01/07/2021 16:00

*bog standard, not big standard

SoSadAboutMyDad · 01/07/2021 16:01

@Wizzbangfizz

Why should we wear masks indefinitely though?! Why give up that freedom - covid is an illness we will have to live with like many others. No idea why mask wearers can't just crack on and let the rest of us live our lives normally.
Maybe because we don’t want all the germy anti-maskers breathing their Covid breath all over us when we pop to the supermarket thanks Hmm

Will you stop going after July 19? I suppose you can aiways take up isolation ft

memberofthewedding · 01/07/2021 16:06

Ive only worn one on one occasion when a tax driver insisted. At present less than 25% of people in supermarkets have one on and often under the nose or around the chin.

Funniest thing I've read today 😂

Ginandfantalemon · 01/07/2021 16:10

If you've been double vaccinated, it should be time to do away with masks, it's probably as good as it's going to get. We need to get on and move forward. Wear your mask if it'll make YOU feel safer, but I cant wait to be able to go out again - into a shop, restaurant, the bank, etc. And if everyone that can be vaccinated is, then I don't think anyone should be made to cover their faces just to protect' little Nelly up the road who unfortunately is vulnerable.' If I was vulnerable I wouldn't expect anyone else to look out for me, unfortunate as it may be.

We need to have more confidence in the vaccines. They are our way out of this. If masks are no longer the law, then nobody has the right to scoff or bully someone on their choice not to wear one or for their need to get on with living their life.

Anitawiglit12 · 01/07/2021 16:10

The bullying has been here since the start of the pandemic. This ‘teacher’s pet approach where they revel in telling people what they can and can’t do, pretending they care about the ‘greater good’ when it’s really just an excuse to be an arsehole to people. Labelling people as ‘thick selfish twats’ for daring to have an alternative view. They’re rife on here and I’ve bore the brunt of them too. It’s total bullying

kindaclassy · 01/07/2021 16:24

Wear your mask if it'll make YOU feel safer,

did you miss out that masks protects others? If masks only had an effect for their wearer, then no one would care if you wear one or not.

Twelvetimestwo · 01/07/2021 16:27

FFP2/3 masks protect the wearer I believe.
(I wore one for three minutes yesterday, couldn't breathe and the chemical smell made me almost sick) but some people might like them

BigWoollyJumpers · 01/07/2021 16:30

Just been into local Sainsburys. A very lovely elderly couple, entered without masks, and were asked very politely if they please comply with mask wearing rule. They very politely declined. No, they were not exempt, they had decided that they were no longer going to wear masks. Politely asked again, politely declined. Went on to do their shopping.

I suspect many will now start to politely decline.

Ginandfantalemon · 01/07/2021 16:30

@kindaclassy, yes I'm quite aware that masks protect others. but if they are no longer mandatory, then I need to get on with my life, so, therefore then, I will not care if anyone else wears one or not. It will be their choice and I wont judge.

nordica · 01/07/2021 16:36

We need to have more confidence in the vaccines. They are our way out of this.

Not everyone will be double vaccinated by 19th July though, that's the issue. 62.7% of adults have had their two vaccinations as of yesterday, so by the 19th there will probably be about 30% of adults and all children still not (double) vaccinated. That's a lot of people left to spread the virus. The first vaccine is also not as effective against the Delta variant, which is why cases are going up so much, although it sounds like it is highly effective after the second vaccine + a few weeks to build immunity.

Obviously the end goal is to "go back to normal" but the virus is not going away on 19th July just because the government decides it's freedom day. Hmm

How do you know whether they're anti-maskers or exempt? Do only those who refuse to wear masks have germy Covid breath? Does Covid differentiate? Do you?
