I've seen one poster say this and I'm curious what other people will answer

OP posts:
allfineanddandytillitsnot · 28/06/2021 21:01

Both. I wasn't too worried about catching CV but I both live and work with people more vulnerable than me who I was worried about passing it on to. I'm also desperate to go abroad on holiday and to see live music again!

allfineanddandytillitsnot · 28/06/2021 21:02

(Ultimately vaccines are the main way out of this mess)

pourmeanotherglass · 28/06/2021 21:03

Beacause I work in a building with vulnerable cancer patients and dont want to give it to them.
Both the other reasons ( my own health and increased freedom) apply too though.
Also, the hope of reaching high enough levels of vaccination that circulation is reduced and kids dont miss more school.

dudsville · 28/06/2021 21:03

All sorts of reasons. I wasn't worried about me statistically, but I had in mind the few outliers that died from it, I wanted to protect others, but mostly I wanted to be able to travel.

TreaslakeandBack · 28/06/2021 21:06

Health and to protect my loved ones

MancyNitford · 28/06/2021 21:07

Personal freedom and to help get us all out the other side of this asap.

TillyTopper · 28/06/2021 21:07

For my health. The freedom thing doesn't bother me much, the only thing I'd like to do is go to Asia on holiday, and that won't be for a while. I can do everything else I want to.

LubaLuca · 28/06/2021 21:08

Both. I'm in a vulnerable group and I want to go on holiday abroad next year.

greensnail · 28/06/2021 21:08

To protect others. I've had covid, it was hideous but I was ok. Family member died from it, don't know for sure whether they caught it from me or someone else, but it's a pretty shitty feeling and wouldn't want to risk passing it on again if I were unfortunate enough to have it again.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 28/06/2021 21:08

I didn't rate having Covid the first time round. I'd rather both avoid having it ever again and avoid potentially killing DP's family with it.

I wouldn't feel great about myself if I killed somebody else by passing it on either, but the odds are that I wouldn't know about them. Additionally, being potentially able to get jobs in multiple sectors is a plus for me, as unlike a lot of people on MN and generally, I know exactly what it's like to be in a position where I've only just managed by the skin of my teeth to avoid homelessness and had to rely upon other people's generosity to feed me.

It's the same reasons why I have my other vaccinations - self preservation, protecting nice people and not wanting the feeling of responsibility for harming others.

MaBroon21 · 28/06/2021 21:09

To be able to travel. Otherwise I wouldn’t have had it and I’m no anti vaxer.

CharlotteRose90 · 28/06/2021 21:09

Did it for my health, my elderly parents health and the ability to travel for my job.

lljkk · 28/06/2021 21:10

Only due to False promise of freedom.

I tend to doubt that I will bother getting 2nd one unless there's a specific benefit. I've never felt we had the best balance of harms & benefits in what really happened to control covid. Getting jab felt like I was being a huge hypocrite, no need to rush to that again.

I thought I'd need vacc for travel insurance to be valid but in fact there are other huge covid-control barriers to any type of foreign travel or seeing my family. Travel insurance not reaching a relevant threshold.

TheKeatingFive · 28/06/2021 21:10

Mostly to get out of lockdowns I suppose.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t particularly want Covid, but getting my and everyone else’s freedom back was top of mind. I had to put my money where my mouth was.

MaBroon21 · 28/06/2021 21:11

Oh, and I’ve had COVID but I still live my day to day life wearing a mask and being observant of social distancing in order to protect others.

greenlynx · 28/06/2021 21:12

Health first. I have a child with additional needs, it affects how I view my freedom.

Livpool · 28/06/2021 21:13

My health as I am CEV due to severe asthma. I also hope it will allow us to return to a sense of near normality. I don't want my DS to grow up in a world this is so restrictive

megletthesecond · 28/06/2021 21:13

Both.
I can't afford afford to get ill (lone parent) and the sooner we can get back to a fairly normal life the better. I never go aboard and rarely go out but it'll be nice when it's safe to go to the gym again and schools have almost no cases.

PuzzledObserver · 28/06/2021 21:14

I think the question as posed is a false dichotomy.

I was initially quite anxious about catching Covid as I am 57 and have a couple of added risk factors, Then I caught it. While it certainly wasn’t nothing - it took me quite a few weeks to get my energy back - I wasn’t desperately ill. So then I was no longer afraid of catching Covid.

Then I was offered my vaccine, and I went. Why? Because I believe in science and medicine, and while I know there are risks in any medication I perceive them as minuscule and because having the vaccine would strengthen and lengthen the protection I presumably had after being infected. And because this is a global pandemic and the more people are vaccinated, the quicker it will be over and the fewer people will die along the way.

So whether that’s protecting my health or for freedom, I don’t know. It really never occurred to me not to have it.

OrangeBananaFish · 28/06/2021 21:14

Definitely not for my own health as I'm not concerned about me catching Covid and I never have been scared of it for me. I did it as I feel it was my duty to have the vaccine in order to A. not spread it to vulnerable people and B. The more people have it, then the better it is for society as a whole.

However, since having the vaccine and seeing the deaths and hospitalisations remain low, but still having restrictions (while all the time the government and certain ex MPs not following the same rules) I don't see the point of moving my second forward. Just like I've stopped doing the LFTs too. I've just given up now. Still wear a mask when I have to, but that's it now.

CinderFuckingRe11a · 28/06/2021 21:15

Freedom to go to the theatre or wherever they undoubtedly will want a COVID passport

chipsandgin · 28/06/2021 21:15

Health and to protect people I love.

PicsInRed · 28/06/2021 21:16

Future planning - to protect against a potentially more severe future variant. Travel would be a welcome bonus.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 28/06/2021 21:16

Bit of both tbh, I've never ever thought that covid was a potential killer for me but I didn't quite fancy being quute ill (albeit probably at home) with 3 dc to look after. Admittedly I also fell for the vaccine will mean freedoms/less restrictions bullshit, thus far its made no difference whatsoever

SockQueen · 28/06/2021 21:17

Because I was about to be redeployed to Covid ICU. So yes, my safety and that of my family.
