Any anti mask people?

Just on the train back from London and there's a group of people on here who say they've been to a rally against wearing masks.

Ive been told I'm damaging myself by wearing my mask as I'm breathing in chemicals from the material which are harmful to me.

Just wondered - anyone been to this or feel the same way? And what are your reasons?

(Might regret this but genuinely curious) Not after a fight!!

For a while it's been easier for those of us who are exempt - nowhere near as much judgement and abuse as previously. But for some reason the tide seems to be turning again - even though all vulnerable adults have been double jabbed and the vaccines appear to be doing their job effectively. Just in the last few days I've seen the IF YOU DON'T WEAR A MASK STAY HOME posts creeping back on here. I really hope it's not a barometer of general, 'real life' feeling.

Same here

My DD is exempt and had been subjected to some pretty shitty behaviour a few months back but it had seemed to ease over the last few weeks and she was just starting to get some confidence back and go out and about again.

But it seems to be turning again - we went out as a family the other evening and had several comments from people about her not wearing a mask - DH, DD1 and I were all wearing them and she has a lanyard.

I think @alloalloallo it’s become more common knowledge that people are wearing fake lanyards to avoid the masks for no valid reason. I’m not for one second implying that’s the case for your family. I’ve seen people wearing Disney ones, plain coloured ones, poppy ones and assorted others rather than the actual sunflowers ones.

Wildswim · 29/06/2021 17:32

@AnneLovesGilbert

Do they worry about rolling over in bed and sniffing pillowcase or duvet?
What a daft thing to say.
Wildswim · 29/06/2021 17:33

@slashlover

Two years ago the conspiracies were about the facial recognition cameras and the government using them to monitor/control us. Now the conspiracies are about using masks to control us when they make the cameras useless.
No they don't. Cameras have now been developed that recognise faces even with masks on.
Wildswim · 29/06/2021 17:35

@Itsstartingtorainout

I’m exempt but I’m also a conscientious objector. There is no good quality evidence to suggest masks make any difference at all, they are just a tool of control.
Same here.

What other people do is not the exempt persons’ fault or their problem and it is not OK to abuse people just because others may or not be taking the piss

My daughter doesn’t have sunflowers on her lanyard (she has a Tourette’s action one). The ones with sunflowers aren’t some kind of official lanyard, they are simply the ones sold by Hidden Disabilities. She does have a card in it explaining that she is exempt and why though.

Once I have explained to the staff at the premises, that should be the end of it. We should not have to explain ourselves to random members of the public. My child should not have to put up with being called a cunt, selfish, that she’s killing people, told she shouldn’t be allowed to go to school or physically threatened

Orchidflower1 · 29/06/2021 19:48

@alloalloallo of course none of those things should be happening to anyone let alone a vulnerable child. I’m sorry that she’s been exposed to that. My point did not condone this in the slightest. I was just stating that more and more people are abusing the system of exemption. Mums I’ve seen on the school run that have previously worn masks are now sporting lanyards.

It’s not just myself that have noticed this phenomenon. Family members and friends have noticed an increase in lanyard wearers and it gives the genuine ones a hard time.

There isn't an 'actual' sunflower one, nor is there an official one.

I stopped wearing a sunflower lanyard when I heard that it was originally intended for those with conditions such as autism who required assistance when shopping/using public transport etc. It seemed unfair to co-opt it so now I wear a red lanyards with 'mask exempt' printed on it. No doubt you'd think it was fake if you saw it.

Incidentally, exempt people are not required to wear any sort of lanyard at all.

The sunflower lanyard does not mean someone is mask exempt! It means the wearer might need some extra support. You can buy masks with the sunflowers on. Sunflower does not mean exempt.

"Fake lanyards" is not a thing. I have one with aliens on, that I made myself. I have a card on it that I printed out from the official .gov site. I even put glitter tape on it to make it more 'me'.

Orchidflower1 · 29/06/2021 20:36

@TheVampiresWife there was no need for the snarky retort.

@XenoBitch last year at work I had been specifically told by our team leader that sunflower lanyards were to signify exemption, whilst people were waiting for their official exemption cards. I am aware of the sunflower link- it links with my field of expertise. I naively assumed it had been selected as the “official” lanyard. In my working life everyone I see who does not wear a mask wears a sunflower lanyard.

I wear a mask, on the rare occasion I go out. I hate them, with a vengance.

I'm quite deaf, though normally manage with hearing aids and lip reading. But masks prevent lip reading. As a result, my d d has to come with me whenever discussion is required (vaccinations, buying a stroller etc).

I also have copd and asthma. I know I could claim a dispensation, but I don't choose to.

I would sooner be uncomfortable myself, than expect the person next to me to feel so. After all, I know why masks are difficult for me, the person next to me does not.

I don't wear a mask to keep me safe, I wear one to keep others safe.

Fair enough as far as I'm concerned

Just wanted to post to say thank you. This is the most selfless post I’ve ever read on this topic - so appreciated Smile

The school my son goes to used to forbid parents from going in to the school’s very large, outdoor playground (to pick up up the children) unless they were wearing a mask.

Initially they would let you go and get your child without a mask as long as you verbally agreed to stay 2 metres away from anyone (easily done as the playground is huge) but then it turned into a complete ban. If a parent showed up without a mask they had to stand outside the school grounds and a teacher would bring the child out to the parents.

It was all so OTT.

Thankfully, common sense has prevailed and parents are now allowed on the grounds again with masks. I would say 90% still wear the masks, but the other 10% wander onto the grounds and the teachers manning the gate (three of them) don’t even bat an eyelid anymore.

I wear the mask because I’m “supposed to” but I think it’s bloody ridiculous.

duckme · 29/06/2021 20:48

@nomorecrumbs

I am more concerned about the environmental impact which disposable masks are having, and the additional laundry which the reusable ones are creating.
Me too! That and the tonnes of lateral flow and pcr tests being carried out each day. The environmental impact of this pandemic will be felt for many years after the last bubble bursts.

What snarky retort? Are you confusing me with another poster?

Your team leader wrong - there's no such thing as 'official exemption cards'. Never has been. Exemption is self certified. At no point have HCPs issued any official document regarding exemption.

Orchidflower1 · 29/06/2021 21:21

It was an EP who told me; I shall raise it on our teams meet tomorrow. It was portrayed to my group of staff that the young people we support would be supplied with exemption certificates from their gp. I don’t know if that’s what my leader thinks or if she is misinformed too.

I was told gp's are not allowed to do exemption certificates
TheVampiresWife · 29/06/2021 22:24

Neither my GP nor my neurologist would even though they both agreed I was exempt. My GP was very apologetic (she's fabulous) and told me to use a sunflower lanyard - I'd never heard of them until that point. Although as I say, I don't use one anymore.

The government website states that GPs aren't providing certification and that none is required.

MyBonfiresBiggerThanYours · 30/06/2021 09:01

Are there any studies on the efficacy of cloth masks that are rarely, if ever, washed, which encourage the wearer to keep touching their face to adjust it, and that are stored scrunched up in pockets with phones, keys etc?

Masks cause children to inhale dangerous levels of carbon dioxide at six times the safe limit.

Can't be good for adults either.

I'm exempt but even I know that's tosh.

more absolute absolute crap

note this is from the same anti-vax quack who published the "vaccines cause more deaths than lives save paper" of which the methods were so shockingly bad three editors resigned and the journal put up a warning. It will be retracted soon.

seems like he has agenda to minimise and deny COVID, yet to work out why though

JustABloodyMinute · 03/07/2021 12:00

Everyone still wearing them here, I do long for the day when young children no longer have to wear them on (long distance) public transport.

I'd like to see the end of disposable ones for public use too.

Chillychangchoo · 03/07/2021 12:02

I think they’re pretty pointless. They’re soulless, they’re restrictive.

I wouldn’t go as far to say that the chemicals are making you ill though, some people just take it too far.

If you want to wear one fine but I can’t wait to chuck mine.
