Any anti mask people?

Just on the train back from London and there's a group of people on here who say they've been to a rally against wearing masks.

Ive been told I'm damaging myself by wearing my mask as I'm breathing in chemicals from the material which are harmful to me.

Just wondered - anyone been to this or feel the same way? And what are your reasons?

(Might regret this but genuinely curious) Not after a fight!!

@lljkk

it's all kicking off again about masks, isn't it? :( I feel slightly sick about this specific debate point kicking off again.
Me too.

For a while it's been easier for those of us who are exempt - nowhere near as much judgement and abuse as previously. But for some reason the tide seems to be turning again - even though all vulnerable adults have been double jabbed and the vaccines appear to be doing their job effectively. Just in the last few days I've seen the IF YOU DON'T WEAR A MASK STAY HOME posts creeping back on here. I really hope it's not a barometer of general, 'real life' feeling.

Hopefully all restrictions will go in a matter of weeks, and that includes compulsory mask wearing. What with that and vaccine efficacy I've no idea why suddenly it's a hot potato again.

Two years ago the conspiracies were about the facial recognition cameras and the government using them to monitor/control us. Now the conspiracies are about using masks to control us when they make the cameras useless.

@NotSoLongGoodbye

I tolerate but struggle with masks and find my life has become limited as a result. I have quite poor eyesight, wear varifocals and find masks make the whole situation worse with the constant steaming up. I needed to return something to a store last week, only option for returns was a touchscreen that I couldn't actually read because my glasses were steamed up and I can't see anything without my glasses. I had to ask for help and just wanted to cry. I felt so useless. So I don't really go anywhere I need to wear masks for any length of time now. And people don't understand because they see the masks as a symbol of preventing covid.
I use varifocals. I bought reusable masks from etsy (which were recommended on here), they were designed to be used with glasses. They come slightly higher up on the face and don't cause my glasses to steam.

Why are people's masks getting soaking wet?

memberofthewedding · 27/06/2021 21:12

I think they look ugly and sinister.

Ive only worn one once - in a taxi where the driver insisted. If it hadnt been dark he might have noticed that my "mask" was made of thin lace. I may as well not have worn it for all the good it did.

I do feel sorry for taxis drivers being trapped in a situation where people don't take precautions if they're able to

Masks looking "ugly and sinister" doesn't seem like a reason to exempt yourself

Bryonyshcmyony · 27/06/2021 22:00

I think it's childish to fuss about masks. If they are uncomfortable and get wet then try some different fabrics. Mine are cosy and I barely notice them. I do feel like I'm about to rob a bank when I put it on before I get out of the car though.

Mine don't look sinister, I have various ones with rainbows, unicorns and I even have a Buzz Lightyear one.

No just my opinion which I’m entitled too, you carry on wearing yours but I’m not wearing one and that’s my choice.[/quote]
So in other words 'you carry on protecting me but I won't protect you. My choice '.

Any idea how much of a selfish knobend you sound?

MercyBooth · 28/06/2021 00:00

Ooh a thread to get people frothing about masks started the day after Hancock is revealed as a raging hypocrite.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 28/06/2021 07:52

I wear one because I have to, not because I believe 2 layers of cotton is going to do much. I can't wear the disposable ones as they make me cough.

I wear mine for a few days (only for a few minutes each time) and they go in a normal 40 wash at the end of the week so they don't create any extra washing. I'm sick of the idiots dropping masks, usually the disposable ones, and not bothering to pick them up.

CrunchyCarrot · 28/06/2021 07:59

My personal view is that masks aren't very effective, especially not the cloth type that are worn by most of the public. It makes sense to me that they may cause more problems than they solve, as one's breath is warm, moist, and contains bacteria, these can colonise the fabric, and so washing it very often and changing masks very frequently would seem to be the only solution if you have to wear them for any length of time. How they would prevent viruses going through I've no idea as the weave is so large compared to a tiny virus.

dementedma · 28/06/2021 08:02

You only have to see the gapping at the side of the paper ones to see how useless they are,not to mention the environmental waste.
We dont need them.

Orchidflower1 · 28/06/2021 12:06

@PinkSparklyPussyCat I’m with you on the dropping the mask thing. It’s lazy and revolting.

Oneearringlost · 28/06/2021 12:14

@womaninatightspot

I work in a tourist town and there are groups of people who don't wear masks. Mainly from Glasgow and surrounds going by the accents. Everyone had a mask on in the supermarket though. Not sure if there is a particular demographic, day drinking beligerents, is that a demographic? However I was told that apparently well to do families are having covid parties for their teens to build up some immunity now that the parents are vaccinated, all v. middle class and outwardly conformist I'm sure. I'm hoping that is just made up nonsense but it wouldn't surprise me tbh.
Totnes?
TheGenealogist · 28/06/2021 12:26

Yup, everyone from Glasgow goes on days out to Totnes, in Devon, 450 miles away.

Ormally · 28/06/2021 17:08

Masks can work. They can work even more reliably with further precautions, such as the 2 metre distancing or being in a well- ventilated area.

Statins for high cholesterol can work to prevent serious cardiovascular events. The success rate is not really that high when you look into it, and people can still experience heart attacks even though they take the preventative. They can work even better combined with changes such as stopping smoking, or weight loss. Different studies have both debunked the link between LDL cholesterol and unhealthy organs, and on the other hand shown that improvements in cholesterol control could be more dramatic if statins were started earlier and taken for longer, so that isn't an unequivocal bill of success for the drug.

If a doctor identified a risk from your body (a major risk, for some) that comes from cholesterol levels, with age and lifestyle a factor, citing statins as one measure to work against it, I suspect you would respect the research and the odds and take them - even though, actually, they can't work magic and promise perfection in every case.

Oh, and a virologist laughing off that it’s not a “killer virus” (bit difficult to explain all the deaths then?) and I see the famous ‘conscientious objector’ never returned to explain how masks are a “tool to control” us, unless such control is an attempt to keep us alive.
DancesWithTortoises · 29/06/2021 07:31

Oooh look, here's some science-

www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-57636360

WeatherSystems · 29/06/2021 11:16

I'm not an anti-masker. I wear mine everywhere I'm supposed to and have done from the start, even though I absolutely HATE it.

I fully and completely support people who choose not to wear one though, whatever their reasoning, it's their business and not for me to know. Plenty of people have reasons that make masks unwearable for them, physical or psychological, and they don't owe anyone their personal medical info. And if someone genuinely believes that they shouldn't be wearing one for other reasons, well I support that.

Mask wearing never needed or was expected to get 100% compliance. Just enough compliance to make an impact. Where I'm from the vast, vast majority wear it. I think I see maybe two people in the entire supermarket without one.

vodkaredbullgirl · 29/06/2021 11:24

Got to wear them at work for 12 hours, changing them throughout the night shift. All though we can take them off, when not seeing to resident.
As long as we keep our distance from each other.

shewalkslikerihanna · 29/06/2021 15:00

I don’t understand why schools insist on them for the school run
If you’re not going inside then they aren’t needed
