No legal compulsion to wear face masks once restrictions are lifted

Sky News reporting this morning that George Eustice has said with the removal of restrictions on July 19th will also come the removal of legal requirements to wear face coverings. I’m torn on how I feel about this.

@Poorlykitten

I’ve never once heard it referred to as a muzzle, people really are quite bizarre.
You can't have been on MN last year then. Or maybe you only saw the "face nappy" comment. Obviously, the masks cobbled together out of an old bit of cushion cover and the extortionate £20 a pop fashion ones have done very little to protect anyone. I remember being sworn at on here last year when I said that where I am only medical grade ones have ever been mandated. I was told "for fuck's sake you don't wear medical grade ones!!!!" If I hadn't, I really wouldn't have been able to go anywhere in the last 16 months! Bought my (hopefully) last packet of surgical ones just this morning. The FFP2/N95 ones are too tight and hot now.
Sparklingbrook · 25/06/2021 10:36

I bought a pack of fabric ones from M&S a week or so again. I also hope they will be my last purchase.
Work supply the blue ones but I don't get on well with those.

Ginandfantalemon · 25/06/2021 11:24

Muzzle, Gag, Face Nappy, Face Mask, Face Covering - whatever you prefer to call it doesn't change what it is. If you cannot wear one and despise them as much as I do as they cause so much anxiety, then you might not take the situation of 'having' to wear one so lightly. My life has been ruined by them, I cant go out. Imagine the fear of spiders, or snakes, but the government tells you you cant go anywhere unless you walk past hoards of them on a daily basis. Would it matter then, what the spider was called!

Sparklingbrook · 25/06/2021 11:49

If I had a fear of spiders or snakes, I would call them spiders/snakes. In fact I do have a fear of spiders.
Some people have a fear of facemasks.

looptheloopinahulahoop · 25/06/2021 12:20

Compliance has been high where I am.

I don't really see what all the fuss is about if you haven't suffered trauma. You wear them for a few minutes inside a shop and then you can take them off. Different if you have to wear them all day for work and I definitely get why you'll be celebrating when you don't have to. Last year when they first came in I said customers should wear them to protect staff precisely so they didn't have to wear them for 8 hour shifts, whereas I might only be in a shop for 5-10 minutes so it's not much of an inconvenience for me.

I think we should continue wearing them to help avoid transmission of flu.

Arrowheart · 25/06/2021 12:25

Can't wait to ditch the face theatre!

I have had to take my baby and toddler for a number medical appointments and it is extremely difficult to manage in a face mask. Where do I fall on your scale of acceptability about making a fuss?

Arrowheart · 25/06/2021 12:27

@NannyAndJohn

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

And let's see what happens with Delta+ before assuming that everything will open up, shall we?

Surprise surprise .
Poorlykitten · 25/06/2021 12:40

@RocheLobe just wear a lanyard like everybody else does?

RocheLobe · 25/06/2021 13:22
@RocheLobe just wear a lanyard like everybody else does?
Why the snark? I’m not exempt. I can cope, I just find it extremely difficult. I’m just wondering how much “fuss” I’m allowed to express this on here, given that I have no associated trauma.

RocheLobe · 25/06/2021 13:23

There are a lot of situations that fall between “a few minutes in a shop” and “wearing one all day for work” that are difficult when wearing a mask, and not necessarily optional. I don’t see a problem with people talking about that, but some see it as making a “fuss” clearly

Poorlykitten · 25/06/2021 14:12

It wasn’t a snark, it was a solution. Lots of people seem to find it difficult and there’s a way to resolve that. Thought I was being helpful. Saw a whole family with them on the other day….

RocheLobe · 25/06/2021 14:16

Yeah, I believe you

canigooutyet · 25/06/2021 14:54

My neighbours 17 year old daughter was physically and verbally abused for wearing the lanyard by a 40 something year old.
This was back when they were very popular as a solution to being exempt.

The girl suffered injuries including broken teeth, concussion and fractured eye socket. Never mind the mental impact it's had on her.

She was called all the selfish murdering cunts you can possibly think of. It's a shame she wont allow the footage to be published now it's been to court as it's horrific and shows the girl just trying to get away. Starts on CCTV and a security guard called police and followed them continuing to film. You can also clearly hear them shout to leave the girl alone along with another witness. The 40 something year old also argues with those 2 and encourages them to abuse the girl.

For those interested, 10 hours community service and not a first time offence.

Thats just one isolated incident of someone vulnerable assaulted for wearing the lanyard. THere was also a poster on here who would post various videos online showing abuse to lanyard wearers including spitting at them.

Poorlykitten · 25/06/2021 15:33

@RocheLobe good and you are most welcome. 😁

The violent person assaulting a stranger in your description is committing a criminal offence. You say, security called the police and another stranger shouted for them to stop; it's hard to know why either stranger didn't physically intervene to help the girl, but that's a bigger request and they clearly weren't supportive of the violent person. Presumably the judge had some reasoning for the low sentence, even if it seems disproportionately low to ask outsider. I'm not sure why you seem to be presenting one violent person's actions as though they represent anyone else though? You can't believe this violent person was actually motivated by the lanyard rather than just wanting to bully someone and choosing the reason later?

Surely you are exempt on the basis of your anxiety?
Middersweekly · 25/06/2021 17:33

Not in the UK but we are finally allowed to remove our masks from tomorrow but only outside when a 1.5m distance can be maintained. Inside shops etc it still has to be worn. It’s currently 30 degrees outside so wearing a mask is sweating hot and making people feel faint! I’m also asthmatic but I’ve worn one the whole time anyway to prevent mask Nazi backlash. Can’t wait to just be done with them and back to normal!

I wear mine as I feel I should but can’t wait to ditch them….I’m not sure how much protection they offer. I was keen to start wearing them as was so scared a year ago or however long it was. I feel less scared now, I’ve had both vaccinations, most people have had at least one vaccine, vulnerable and elderly have had both.

I have a “disposable mask” in most pockets….I wear them for weeks and weeks. They’re crumpled and grubby. When they get too grubby I wash them in the washing machine and wear them again. I can’t wear the fabric ones, my glasses steam up even with the metal bits. Plus I lose them and they’re expensive. Disposable ones are too expensive to only wear once.

You shouldn't put a madk on a toddler

Just read it. It's all conjecture with no evidence to back it up. It doesn't remotely resemble a scientific study. The author clearly has an agenda, you can tell from the spewing of loads of rhetorical questions towards the end.

Fluffykins2020 · 25/06/2021 17:48

Thank fuck for that, I'm 36 weeks pregnant and can't breathe properly with the mask on! I understand why they are needed but cant wait to set mine on fire. R.I.P mask!!

KittyTheBirder · 25/06/2021 17:49

Masks are not about protecting the wearer but rather the people they come into contact with. If you're ill (and don't know it - in the case of many people with Covid) and then cough or sneeze, at least some of your germs will be caught in your mask, potentially reducing the number of people in your immediate vicinity unwittingly breathing them in.

While I absolutely agree that masks are uncomfortable, it's a faff having to remember to have one on you all the time and the piety police constantly tutting and judging are a pain, I will happily continue to wear one if it means I'm less likely to transmit something to someone vulnerable. It's such a small sacrifice in the greater scheme of things.

I do find it so bizarre when folk go off on one about masks being some sort of infringement on their civil rights - imagine if the doctor performing surgery on you, or your dentist, had the same attitude! Wink
