My son tested positive on Sunday & today I started to feel congested & throat feels scratchy so did lateral flow & it's come back positive! I'm awaiting for a appointment to become available for a PCR. I'm really scared!! I'm overweight....I suffer with health anxiety so as you can imagine I'm absolutely petrified!!

faithfulbird20 · 26/06/2021 23:45

What does it feel like for you?
please don't be scared I totally get your anxiety my sister is the same...

Make sure you have a lot of chicken soup/broth and liquids and all of you rest. Your body will heal faster.

PacifyLulu · 26/06/2021 23:55

@Rainbowsandstorms because she had a choice. And by making a sensible choice )which I appreciate she might have needed help with) she would be in a better situation as would other people around her. Getting vaccinated is the responsible thing to do for ourselves, our loved ones and society.

Advice such as take chicken soup as pp suggests is ridiculous. If that really helped covid we wouldn’t be in a bloody global pandemic.

covidcloser · 26/06/2021 23:59

What's the thinking here? Chicken soup cures covid?

Namechanged4thi5 · 27/06/2021 00:01

@Roch91 I’m 40, unvaccinated, and very scared of Covid and the vaccine, have health anxiety - so you are not alone in this.

Now is not the time to think about the vaccine like some posts here suggests- do please ignore unhelpful posts- they won’t help your mental health.

If I tested positive I will be very scared as well because every news item around us has been repeating to us that it’s vaccine or death- so naturally we are primed to think this way.

Take it an hour at a time/a minute at a time if it helps- but focus on making yourself comfortable and monitoring your symptoms- if looking at the oxi meter increase your anxiety ask someone else in the family to keep a tab, so you don’t obsess over numbers

Eat if you can but keep yourself well hydrated

If you feel you need help please ring 111/999- the nhs is a health provider, as much as we are trying to save the nhs the nhs has a duty to save the citizens, this is not the time to worry if you are wasting time.

Put yourself first for the next few days and focus on getting better-

If it helps and only if it helps talk to people here in mumsnet-

I will keep my fingers crossed for you…

MyMabel · 27/06/2021 00:37

@Roch91

I’m in the same boat, petrified of reactions and side effects of the vaccine. I’m all for it, super pro-vaccine.. I just can’t bring myself to book mine because of my health anxiety. It’s really difficult.

I hope you’re feeling better soon Flowers

MaleficentsCrow · 27/06/2021 01:01

Not quite understanding why the people too scared to get vaccinated, are then saying everyone else should get vaccinated too.

So you aren't willing to risk the side effects but think the rest of the population should, just so you can be safe 😂 I've heard it all now...

Thegreymethod · 27/06/2021 01:13

We had it last month, me and 3 of my children, then as we were nearing the end of isolation (2 days before) my daughter tested positive and we were told by track and trace we could finish our isolation as planned but my daughter had to start again but if she'd tested positive the day after our isolation finished we'd all have to start again. She told me that although everyone in the family would get a text telling us to isolate due to being a close contact we should ignore all texts and she had made a note on our file in case we were questioned about us not isolating but that it probably wouldn't happen, I'm not saying your wrong but it's crazy how different people are told different things! No wonder people are confused! Hope you're better soon.

kwaziseyepatch · 27/06/2021 01:16

@Thegreymethod people who have tested positive can finish their isolation, it's the people within the household who have yet to get it that have to restart in case they get infected by the new positive case

Wishing you well OP. Stay well hydrated as per PP comments

victoriaspongecake · 27/06/2021 01:27

Why do you need a pcr test if lateral flow has shown positive?

Thegreymethod · 27/06/2021 01:37

I thought that would be the case but my husband didn't have covid (I don't know how with us all having it!) So I double checked that he didn't have to start his isolation again and she assured me he didn't, just my child who had tested positive after everyone else 🤷🏼‍♀️

Thegreymethod · 27/06/2021 01:39

@victoriaspongecake

Isnt is because LF's aren't as a curate as PCR's and can give a false positive? As soon as you log a positive LF you get sent for a PCR and if you don't go for the PCR they ring you and ask you why you haven't been.
SoSadAboutMyDad · 27/06/2021 02:06

No sympathy Hmm

Lostinacloud · 27/06/2021 02:25

OP, look at the statistics for your age group. They speak for themselves and I would guess that you are somewhere around the 99% of people for whom covid is not fatal.
In case it makes you feel any better, I had symptomatic covid last October and honestly it felt like a 3 day hangover and no worse. It started with a cough and scratchy throat like you and then I had a headache that lasted around 3 days on and off but which was easily controlled with plain old paracetamol. No breathing problems whatsoever and no extreme fatigue just standard tiredness from feeling under the weather. I did lose my taste and smell for about 2 weeks but felt pretty much back to normal after a week and suffered no long term effects. The media has primed us all to believe that everyone is going to need a ventilator if they get covid and that simply isn’t the case. Just rest and drink lots of fluids as you would for any other illness and I’m sure you’ll be fine.

mog27 · 27/06/2021 02:28

@SoSadAboutMyDad

No sympathy Hmm
No help either. I don't know why people can't just shut up if they have nothing useful to say.
faithfulbird20 · 27/06/2021 05:53

@PacifyLulu no what is ridiculous is you thinking you can come on the internet and manipulate people by guilt to get the vaccine!

As for the chicken soup comment don't knock it down till you try it! My sister had COVID in December and she had it everyday even twice a day to get better in the early stages!

faithfulbird20 · 27/06/2021 05:55

@covidcloser can you read? We're not a panel on mock the week mate. I said to have liquids too. The whole ideas of having liquids when you're sick. Chicken soup or BROTH does help.

faithfulbird20 · 27/06/2021 05:58

@mog27 exactly I honestly don't get people. We've had the vaccine and sometimes I wish I didn't because the side effects aren't amazing either!

GiantToadstool · 27/06/2021 05:59

How are you feeling OP? Day 10 was the worst for me and then I picked up.

Treehaus · 27/06/2021 06:10

@boogiebogie

Get the vaccine on top of having the virus? Bit nuts. The latest data is same no of deaths for vaccinated and non vaccinated people?
Even if that's true, it's good news for vaccines. Everyone who is vulnerable has been offered one now, so if the deaths of those match those of low risk ones, it shows they're doing a great job of reducing serious illness.
covidcloser · 27/06/2021 06:40
@covidcloser can you read? We're not a panel on mock the week mate. I said to have liquids too. The whole ideas of having liquids when you're sick. Chicken soup or BROTH does help.
Well you are a charmer, aren't you Hmm

PacifyLulu · 27/06/2021 07:54

@faithfulbird20
Oh well then, if it’s liquids AND chicken soup or broth, you’re probably right Hmm
I wonder why the WHO hasn’t made an announcement on this yet?
Just because your sister took it and got better doesn’t mean it works. I ate a lot of chocolate when I had covid and I got better. Does that mean that’s a cure too?

And to whoever said I was trying to manipulate people to get the vaccine through guilt - no, I stated the situation. If that makes someone feel guilty it’s probably because they have something to feel guilt for.

@covidcloser - you were much nicer to @faithfulbird20 than I was tbh so I’m not sure why you got a rude response.

The thread is ridiculous.

leafygarden42 · 27/06/2021 08:11

The latest data is same no of deaths for vaccinated and non vaccinated people?

Really? That's news to me.

Silly old me thought that having the vaccine reduced your chances quite considerably of even going to hospital. Like - that is the whole point of having a vaccine.

Hey ho - those daft scientists with all their work at getting an effective vaccine.....

leafygarden42 · 27/06/2021 08:12

@PacifyLulu

You're right - the thread is ridiculous.

UnaOfStormhold · 27/06/2021 08:21

@boogiebogie there are a lot more vaccinated people than non vaccinated, particularly in high risk groups so saying "same number of deaths" doesn't give you a fair comparison. Say you have 10000 vaccinated people with a 1 in 1000 chance of dying and 50 unvaccinated people with a 1 in 5 chance of dying, you'd get the same number of deaths in each group but I know which group I would rather be in!

LEMtheoriginal · 27/06/2021 08:28

Re the chicken soup issue? Should that be home made chicken soup or tinned? I can't imagine tinned chicken soup doing much more than send people on their way Envy

Joking aside, OP , i had covid it Christmas. I am overweight and also have health anxiety. It was pants and i felt rubbish for a good few weeks, couldn't get out of bed for lack of energy for a week but if im honest, ive felt worse with colds if that makes sense. Luckily for me it didn't go to my chest, although my chest felt tight on day one that was it.

I hope you feel better soon.
