God it just goes on and on. Who would seriously be able to stomach another lockdown

Ah I see. We get it out of the way now before normal cold and flu season.

Yes. Its going to happen. The issue is more management of it.

It's not inevitable that the U.K. will have another significant wave of covid

Why would it be? There are plenty of places on earth that won't.

It is however, inevitable with this government's covid strategy. They don't plan to stop it.

They're selling it as "have the wave now instead of in the winter - but their policy will lead to a wave now and a wave in wintertime. And the spring. And next summer....

You've just missed the point of where the conversation was at.

We were talking about a cold/flu wave and the implications of it.

I wondered if I could pass on some information that I learned from hard won experience in case it helps other parents?

My DS was terriby susceptible to viruses when he was a toddler and in his early school years. He lost an awful lot of school attendance and had just terrible illnesses all the time.

Anyway, we found out in the end that he was short of iron.

Once I figured that out, I started giving him measured amounts of fortified breakfast cereal, to get him the exact RDA of iron every day, and he became fabulously virus-proof and stopped getting ill (touches wood). It really was so much better and he went right up to 100% attendance.

So if your kid suffers with a lot of viruses, it might be worth checking their diet to make sure they have enough iron and B vitamins. It's worth remembering that all wheat flour is fortified with iron and some B vitamins, as a legal requirement. So if you are counting, you need to count stuff like bread, and if your child is off wheat then you need to count extra carefully because a whole lot will be missing.

I should admit at this point that he did get covid last year and had a really bad cough for a month, but other than that, he is good.

Hope that helps some folks out there.

I would hope that as a positive to take from this while covid situation is that in future flu seasons people are more aware of spreading and do things like wear a mask in enclosed public spaces, wash hands more and that folk don’t feel they need to drag their sick sorry arses into work and employers are more relaxed about people taking a sick day and working from home etc

That’s all very well, but would they be understanding about parents keeping children home when they have a cold? Because that patience wore out long ago with many employers with respect to covid isolations.
TheMawisbraw · 26/06/2021 22:29

Good point! I’ve only got one employee with children and it’s not been an issue yet and it’s also a trade job so home working isn’t an option for my employees. I just hope that as a nation we are a bit more aware about spreading our germs at least for a wee while

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 26/06/2021 22:53

Providing the parent can work from home I would hope most employers wouldn't have an issue. If they can't the I don't see why the rest of us should be expected to pick up the slack just because someone's kid has a cold.

My job can be done from home but not with my 1yo around
