Announcement tomorrow?

Is there any definite plan for a formal announcement tomorrow of the plans for the next step? I haven't seen anything, just curious what time it will be (as that often indicates whether it will be major news or not!)

OP posts:

Hmmm, so what about the 12 people in the UK who have DIED OF DELTA VARIANT COVID AFTER BEING DOUBLE VACCINATED (to adopt your shouty caps). I have just a sneaking suspicion that some of those would have been ventilated before they sadly died (as well as likely having underlying conditions)

Let's take a moment to remind ourselves that they died with it and not necessarily of it. They are two very different things.

AND that's TWELVE people. Whilst very sad, many many more people die each day of other causes.

Interesting comparison with WW2 earlier in the thread. Blackout rules in the UK were lifted round about VE day, not VJ day- and it's arguable either way whether they should have been completely lifted earlier, not just eased a bit.

Yes covid is a global pandemic...but so is HIV and our response and resources dedicated to HIV control are presumably not exactly the same as the strategy in sub Saharan African countries. What is proportionate in one country at one time point is not the same as another country. Isn't covid more or less endemic here now?

I very much agree with the previous poster who wants to know the end goal. This needs to be clear otherwise how can we have confidence in the steps taken to achieve it.
Is the goal zero covid? Probably not realistic- now or probably ever, and certainly a month delay isn't going to make the difference in achieving it.

Flattening the curve and protecting the NHS? It's midsummer, they're as far from breaking point with the management of respiratory viruses as it is practically possible for the NHS to be.

So what are we trying to achieve?

[quote conkersarebonkers]Guess what the Indian variant STILL got in to Australia and they are experiencing their 4th wave!

Just looking at Australia on Worldometers and I don't see anything resembling a 4th wave there. TBH I can't even see a 3rd wave on the graph. Australia seems to have had < 20 cases a day for several months.

What am I missing?

Australia haven't had waves. They've had clusters and kept on top of them.

Boris's achilles heel is that he is obsessed with being popular. This is a government ruled by social media, rather than having the guts to make difficult decisions

He lacks the balls to make the tough decisions, especially if they're unpopular with his alt-right base (the likes of Daily Telegraph journalists and talk radio presenters).

That's why it always gets left to the last moment. It's pure expectation management. He did the same thing at Christmas because he didn't want the Boris Cancels Christmas headline and did want the Boris Saves Christmas. He wanted to usher in 'freedom day' piggybacking off the vaccine bounce for extra personal popularity.

WouldBeGood · 14/06/2021 15:49

I think in real life most people want restrictions lifted.

TFISunny · 14/06/2021 16:18

Where is the announcement being broadcast? I would assume it was on BBC 1, but can't see it. Not on BBC News either...

6pm BBC News Special on the news channel. I'm sure Sky News will broadcast it too.
Wanttocry · 14/06/2021 16:23

@TFISunny I think they’ve said 6pm so the 6 o’clock news I guess.

TFISunny · 14/06/2021 16:26

Oh ok, so it's not classed as a Covid Press Conference then?

Of course they do. I do too as it's been a painful 15 months, but I don't want us to blow it now. I want whatever we do to be well thought through and as balanced as possible, rather than a kneejerk reaction to frustration.
nolovelost · 14/06/2021 16:57

Yep conference after 6.

Snapemalloy · 14/06/2021 17:41

so if science followers knew it was going to be 2 years can you give some guess when things will get back to normal or will they never ?

Can't answer that. I think we could be back to 100% normality (ie no masks, no SD, everything opened with no restrictions and so on) by early next year/Spring but ONLY if most of the rest of the world has been double vaccinated by then

Or we could have mostly normality by Spring next year (or earlier) without the rest of the world being double vaccinated BUT there would be little to no international travel.

While ROTW hasn't been vaccinated and our borders are basically fully open, it will be stop start stop start.

sirfredfredgeorge · 14/06/2021 17:52

but ONLY if most of the rest of the world has been double vaccinated by then

It is impossible for the rest of the world to be double vaccinated by then.

so that's an utterly pointless prediction

PaulaStrandsDebut · 14/06/2021 17:55

@carrythecan

girasol the NHS have stated that the 12 deaths of fully vaccinated people have all been in people also suffering from "profound co-morbitities".

We really should be celebrating how well the vaccine in working. The fact that cases are rising but deaths are not rising accordingly is very good news.

That is indeed fantastic news.

I'm happy to postpone opening up things further. Everyone can meet with everyone now as long as they stick to the rules and remain sensible. Soon it's the summer holidays and even more people will have had their first and second doses. Softly, softly now just for a little longer. Frankly, I don't mind wearing masks in shops, and I am very happy to socially distance with people who are not my family or in my household.

It would be horrendous to have another full blown lockdown and if taking things slowly now means that we prevent further full LD, I'm all for it.

I have followed the rules to the letter. I know that when cases go up again, I will no longer comply and I know enough people who followed the rules who will arrange discrete playdates or come over for sensible small scale socialising.

bumbleymummy · 14/06/2021 18:03

What about the deaths in the non vaccinated people? We’re they suffering from profound comorbidities too or are we just supposed to focus on the fact that they were unvaccinated?

TFISunny · 14/06/2021 18:15

Did Boris mean to say July 29th? I thought the delay was until the 19th.

A very good question.

Yes I think July 19th

Bit tough to listen to tonight

PicsInRed · 14/06/2021 18:22

What's with the incredibly tame public questions?

We all know there are much more pointed questions to ask. It's such transparently staged nonsense.

ineedaholidaynow · 14/06/2021 18:22

He did mumble the 29th at one point, but he obviously meant the 19th

PawsQueen · 14/06/2021 18:22

The thing is, they say profound co morbidity - I kind of wish we knew what they were
Because I'm group 4, CEV and selfishly yes I shielded and then was happy to get the vaccine for my own protection (and others) but if it won't work for me then.. what now? Yes I know we can't lock down forever but on an individual level I'm a bit.. meh? If that makes sense

Pootle40 · 14/06/2021 18:24

@bumbleymummy

But we don't know why these people died, they just happened to have Covid in the 28 days before they died. How do we know the relevance of whether they were vaccinated?
Snapemalloy · 14/06/2021 18:25

Just so pointless announcing dates. As this whole debacle has proved people set store by them and are then wildly disappointed when they are inevitably delayed.
