No mine won't be

I honestly thought I knew what the government were doing. I thought they were ‘hedging their bets’ by vaccinating from the top end - and going for natural immunity from the bottom. Who actually knows how long natural immunity would last? There is evidence that natural immunity has lasted 17years from the original SARS virus. Surely this would have given us a shot at more long-term protection (Although risky) But then I don’t know enough about how each virus mutates and scientists seem particularly scared about the unusual, un-natural, unknown properties/genome of this virus. So I don’t have a clue what’s going on now! My eldest doesn’t want the vaccine. Not sure how to approach this with my other teen. They’ve had covid already too, has have many teens it seems. I thought that was the plan. Seems I was wrong.

Geamhradh · 05/06/2021 13:04

Yes
Our 18 year old students where I live were all done in a max-vax programme last week and I can book DD (17) as of next Friday.
It's fantastic news.

Lostinacloud · 05/06/2021 13:05

How can any health authority say that the risks outweigh the benefits when in under 6 months of vaccinating children, already more have been adversely affected by the vaccine than died in the whole of last year from covid according to data from the USA. It’s nothing short of criminal and I will not be asking my children to take this vaccine. Anyone worried about their own health in case of catching covid is welcome to get vaccinated themselves, including teachers. Do not ask my children to risk their own health for the sake of yours.

Through this whole episode I have been so grateful for the fact children did not seem affected by covid and now we want to risk their lives by giving them “protection” for something they don’t need protecting against? It’s actually astounding to me that it’s even being considered let alone carried out willingly.

Lostinacloud · 05/06/2021 13:11

We haven’t reached this age group here in the U.K. yet so there is no anecdotal evidence floating around and perhaps those on the ground haven’t noticed yet but Israel ate also investigating heart problems caused by the vaccine in young people and children.

EvilPea · 05/06/2021 13:12

I signed mine up for the trials.

Teens are affected though. There’s no way I’d risk long covid in them.
OrangeBananaFish · 05/06/2021 13:16

Apparently they will. I have left it up to them and they have both said they will. If they didn't want to then I wouldn't have forced them to.

13 and 16 Year olds.

Lostinacloud · 05/06/2021 13:20

I’d rather long covid post viral symptoms that eventually fade than permanent heart damage. And how prevalent is long covid in teens in actual numbers? One of my teens has had covid and had a headache for 24hrs, no lasting effects whatsoever. I tend to consider that his case is more common. Same for me, an otherwise healthy woman in my early 40’s. Had what felt like a 3 day hangover and a dry cough for a week and then once again, zero long term effects. These stories are the norm and it’s been lost in all the individual scare stories.

ineedaholidaynow · 05/06/2021 13:31

One of our neighbours’ daughters has long Covid. She has had the most awful year and has only just been able to start going back to school an hour a day.

Abraxan · 05/06/2021 13:33

Travel implications are also a factor for Dd. She lovely holidays and travel, and whilst we might not have different rules for vaccinated/unvaccinated some other countries already do and may well do going forward.

For example in Florida, where we often go, fully vaccinated people don't need masks and social distancing. In Portugal where she is currently visiting a friend have some different rules for vaccinated people to unvaccinated. Whilst for flying and some stuff you can bypass them with a negative Covid test it removed that need.

Lostinacloud · 05/06/2021 13:35

Not to downplay your poor neighbour’s situation at all but in a way this sort of thing is not new. I went to school with at least 4 girls who developed glandular fever and as a result went on to miss about 2 years of school and even when I was at primary school one of my friends caught a virus, reacted badly and ended up hardly able to stand for about 4 years. All awful cases but not new and not the norm.

kowari · 05/06/2021 13:35

DS is 15 so it would very much be his decision. It's not a topic that has come up yet though.

It's a wonder the well-known family doctor and self styled expert on Covid, Andrew Boston has time to think about vaccines when he's so busy writing his anti-Islam books, isn't it?
WuhanClanAintNothingToFuckWith · 05/06/2021 13:43

Maybe they should run more tests on (consenting) teens who have had covid (with varying levels of symptoms) to establish more data regarding risks of heart/lung damage and other long covid concerns. To be honest the long-term fatigue and loss of taste/smell is weird enough in itself and difficult to live with for a teen (who does nothing but eat!) Surely we need some research. Although I accept too that many youngsters will be living with underlying conditions that they are unaware of as undiagnosed at their young healthy age!

Lostinacloud · 05/06/2021 13:49

@Geamhradh it’s the VAERS report figures I’m concerned with, the person who is attempting to bypass the global narrative and post something that might not look as we are being told is not as relevant to me in this instance

Kolo · 05/06/2021 13:52

@RiskyReels

Yes absolutely dd14 and she's keen to have it. Concerned about long covid, further disruption to schooling and socialising if the new variants continue to circulate through schools. And it is the right thing to do, to help reduce virus transmission in general for our country and others. The more virus there is circulating, the more chance of mutations and nastier variants emerging. And I can't understand why people are willing to take the risk of unknown long term complications from a new virus, that is known to have weird effects across many organs and systems in the body and high prevalence of long covid, rather than the absolutely tiny risk of vaccine complications. If the chance to protect my kids comes up, I'll jump at it.
This is why I'd seriously consider it for my children. My kids have the flu vaccination at school each year, not for their own protection but because it's just good for us all to have less of a virus bobbing about. The better controlled the virus is, the less chance of mutations. We've been really lucky so far in that mutations seem to be held back by the vaccine, but it's a matter of time. I just want to be able to go back to as normal as possible, and if most of the population are vaccinated, normal will look more like it did before.
dementedma · 05/06/2021 13:58

My 19 year old has his second one tomorrow

ineedaholidaynow · 05/06/2021 14:00

@Lostinacloud I had glandular fever as a teen and I was lucky enough to only miss a term of school. But I didn't know anyone else who had it (who knows how I got it)

The other day there was a report that a school had 100 positive COVID cases, so I assume there is a risk if we let COVID loose on schools that a greater number of children will get long COVID than get long term impacts from glandular fever etc

Barbie222 · 05/06/2021 14:08

Absolutely, I know a fair few children with long covid. It's not nice.

I’m no expert. But I’d imagine that’s when variants flourish as well.

EvilPea · 05/06/2021 14:36

Long covid doesn’t fade away for everyone. One person I know with it is going backwards, they are a year on. That’s a year out of school.

EvilPea · 05/06/2021 14:37

I’m another who had glandular fever as a teen. It still affects me now
