@TheSunIsStillShining

If I was an A-level English teacher I would include this whole DC story in the curriculum. Unfortunately it is almost perfectly built, orchestrated and put on display. And I guess ppl will be swallowing it hook, bait and sinker.

To rebuff even just some of the blatant twists to the actual facts someone would need to fact check and publish a counter "testimony".
I'd guess I'd expect BBC to do that at least.

But that is never going to happen.
I do wonder what his end game is though?...

Cummings is like a Shakespearian plotter. Iago? Or a villain from a Jacobean tragedy. De Flores?
JanFebAnyMonth · 28/05/2021 08:24

Parents United (Fb group) data guy has posted this, is he correct, ie is the growth of IV cases outstripping the capacity of the genomic testing system?

*Variants of concern or under investigation: data up to 26th May 2021

UK total distribution

HUGE increase in the Indian variants Bi.617.2 up 157% 152% 160% and 103% this week growing from 192 to 6959 between 28th April and 26th May....

2 new VUI's added Yorkshire and Thai.

Factor to remember despite the speed of growth of Indian variant it may not show in this data in recent weeks - approx 9100 cases are sequenced each week according to the past 2 weeks so with a number limited data set huge growth will not be so apparent now ie doubling will not occur next week as not enough sequencing available.....

VOC-21APR-02 N/A B.1.617.2 India 6959 + 3535 up 102.9%*

JanFebAnyMonth · 28/05/2021 08:25

*presume he means “doubling will not appear to have occurred next week”

JanFebAnyMonth · 28/05/2021 08:31

Also, I heard a news article a few months ago about a new sequencing process, which only takes 24 hours as opposed to the existing 5 days, and that it would be brought online quickly. But this, from the Sanger Institute, says 24 hrs to sequence but the “whole process” takes 5 days:

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/sangerinstitute.blog/2021/02/05/sequencing-covid-our-latest-stats/amp/

Anyone know?

MRex · 28/05/2021 08:33

The genome testing capacity was being expanded massively, any cap might be short-term and is mostly linked to surge testing demand, where once you know that area is all IV there isn't much value in checking them all. We reached 75% of cases and sufficient geographical spread, so we must accept it's the dominant strain now and variant testing is more interested in the prevalence of other variants.

JanFebAnyMonth · 28/05/2021 08:57

Ah so you think we won’t be told in future what percentage of new cases are IV, because it’s not a significant fact? Does that mean the end of surge testing, or is that still needed to at least increase the proportion of positive cases detected so that isolation (hopefully!) happens?

Really what’s needed, as has been the case for a year, is a fully functioning T&T system, including proper support for those who need to isolate. As is being currently trialled in some areas.

Cornettoninja · 28/05/2021 08:59

Does that mean the end of surge testing, or is that still needed to at least increase the proportion of positive cases detected so that isolation (hopefully!) happens?

I don’t know for certain but I’d hope the surge testing strategy remains in place. It’s at its most effective when case numbers are relatively low.

MRex · 28/05/2021 09:08

Percentage of variant cases will be available, I had a response from the data board that they are considering including it. With that, the absolute number sequenced of that variant is less significant - when it's 90% then take 90% of the total case number instead. Surge testing is about finding cases rather than variants, that'll hopefully still happen in any areas of high community spread along with surge vaccination.

Really sensible and basic point made about the 4 Steps...... (although he’s maybe over emphasising how safe concerts etc are):

This is looking good ❤

So far only ONE overnight hospitalisation for a patient who had 2 doses out of total of 5599 sequenced cases of B.1.167.2

TruelyStruttingHotpants · 28/05/2021 12:38

Someone is saying we have around 8 million second doses left to finish the priority list. Does that sound right?

TheSunIsStillShining · 28/05/2021 13:14

@herecomesthsun
Iago def, but also if you look at the big picture it lends itself to both satire and dystopian drama, like Ionescu.
Or, if you will, it would make for a good comedia dell'arte piece with DC frequently hissing out secrets to the audience :)

Culture difference: had no idea what Jacobean drama was, so thank you for broadening my horizon :) I will have to read some of those!

Similar to Elizabethan tragedy but more cynical and bloodthirsty, with a hint of the Addams family to it. And lots of illicit sex.

Excellent news:

Public Health England (PHE) data shows that the majority of people with the Indian variant have not been vaccinated, with just 3% of cases (177 out of 5,599) from February 1 to May 25 having received both doses.

Of 201 people who ended up in A&E, just five people had had both vaccine doses, while 138 were unvaccinated and 45 had had their first dose more than three weeks previously.

Of 43 patients who needed to be admitted to hospital overnight, only one person had had both vaccines, the PHE data showed.

TheSunIsStillShining · 28/05/2021 15:07

@herecomesthsun
I am going to love it :)

AbsolutelyFudged · 28/05/2021 16:20

I know rising cases was expected and to a degree, accepted, but what degree of rising hospitalisation rates do people think will be acceptable, as they obviously are rising now?

I don’t know, I’m gutted they’re going back up and can’t see June 21st easing will happen now.

It really is a direct race between infection and vaccination rates.

Bloody variants throwing a spanner in the works Sad

Back down below 900 again
Bordois · 28/05/2021 16:33

Hospitalisations look to be fairly static so far?

Frazzled2207 · 28/05/2021 16:35

@Bordois
in the NW patients on ventilation have shot up from 21 to 30 overnight which is not good

PumpkinPie2016 · 28/05/2021 16:37

More cases and admissions today but actual numbers in hospitals are down, back below 900, and numbers on ventilators are down too - 120 from 125.

So, not all bad news (I think!). I guess hospitals are managing to send people home as others are admitted rather than just having more and more coming in.

Deaths still low.

Let's hope that as vaccines continue, it stays that way!

Frazzled2207 · 28/05/2021 16:46

thinks are heading in the wrong direction all across greater manchester now. Is a worry for the kids in schools I think most of all. At least they are off for half term now (two weeks where I am).

Needanewhat · 28/05/2021 16:56

This is starting to feel a lot like autumn last year.

Bordois · 28/05/2021 16:58

What actually constitutes an admission into hospital? Is someone turning up because they have breathing difficulties but are sent home after overnight observation shows they aren't in any danger classed as an admission?

lunar1 · 28/05/2021 17:03

I'm in the NW any the hospital data is worrying me. I think it's really important to remember though that not every admission is equal. When hospitals have less Covid patients, they have an easier criteria for admission.

In January my friend was turned away while really very ill with covid, if he was in the same condition now he would be admitted immediately. He ended up with a PE when he was turned away.
