@herecomesthsun what about those without asthma, or immune suppressant medication? Ones who were shielding with their families?
I think many parents might be more worried about getting their children vaccinated than on getting themselves? as the vaccine has been less tested on kids (timewise) and if the incidence is low where they live the isolation time might not happen? I've got 3 nephews, 2 in secondary and they've not had to isolate cuz of the school

I'm only doing my guesses, my child is too young for the vaccine so not in the position of having to decide

Firefliess · 04/06/2021 14:25

@MRex

Why do you think they would wait for 12-15? Earlier doses will build immunity before going back into school. I think they'll target all willing arms by end of July (but call it end of August).
Depends whether they think they'll do better going via schools or just via GPs/vaccination centres in the same was as they've done the adults. Might be more efficient to do them at school, but I agree with you that getting them jabbed before the start of the autumn term would help stop school outbreaks better
Piggywaspushed · 04/06/2021 14:31

A question re students... are they not going to reach the student age group when most of them are residing away from their GP area? How does that work? And what about the second dose?

DS1 is due home this Sunday. Not jabbed yet (19). GP 100+ miles away once he is back.

Do they just register online and go where is convenient?

On the one hand, I think people need to have choices. Their choices will depend in part on their circumstances. All of the above issues apply to us, so rob my DC will choose to go for Pfizer (but it's up to the DC).

I don't think you should or could insist that someone vehemently opposed to a vaccine should have a jab, but there might be consequences for example around holidays, outwith our government's control. For instance, we might eventually find that the US or EU countries are asking for people to have been vaccinated in order to travel.

when you select the vaccine yoou input the postcode of the place where you want to have it so your kids can have it near you despite their gp is 100 miles away

He is coming back to a place calling over 18s but from a place that hasn't got to them yet... complicated...

Seems encouraging, but it looks like the hospitalisations haven’t been updated since 31st, why would that be?
MRex · 04/06/2021 16:15

It's not looking good.

I think you’re right my kids are younger but I’d be far more hesitant about vaccinating my kids than myself

wintertravel1980 · 04/06/2021 16:24

Blackburn is a problem.

Vaccination levels there are lower than in Bolton so reversing the trend will be much harder. We can also see from the heatmap that the virus has spread to older groups (which again was not the case in Bolton).

Press reported earlier than Blackburn stopped getting extra vaccines for surge vaccinations. If it is the case, it is a very bad decision and I hope it will be reversed soon. We have got the supply (this week has been a very big week for vaccine deliveries!). We should be able to act quickly.

If we're basing it on hospitalizations and deaths which is the only important factor then I would suggest quite the opposite.
PatriciaHolm · 04/06/2021 16:27

The hospitalisation number is only updated when they have data for all 4 countries, and the latest data the board has for Scotland is 31st.

Looking at England only admissions (fromwww.england.nhs.uk/statistics/statistical-work-areas/covid-19-hospital-activity/)

shows the 7 day average of admissions to Jun 2 up 3.5% on the week, and beds up 3%. So going up, but far more slowly than cases at the moment, or have been for the last fortnight.

wintertravel1980 · 04/06/2021 16:33

If we're basing it on hospitalizations and deaths which is the only important factor then I would suggest quite the opposite.

Hospitalisations and deaths are both lagging factors.

The countrywide hospitalisation numbers on the UK summary page are skewed by Wales admissions (which are based on a different methodology and make zero sense) so they should be ignored.

The England hospitalisation picture is very mixed. Bolton's declining trend still looks very reassuring but (i) it suggests other places will go up before they go down and (ii) it is not clear whether areas with lower vaccination rates will be able to follow the suit. I am a bit disappointed we are not making use of the 5 million vaccine doses we received this week. Actually, I am not entirely correct - Wales is moving ahead as fast as ever - but the other nations are lagging.

MRex · 04/06/2021 16:53

I want to be optimistic, but there is a lag factor and there is a fair amount of spread with schools back from half term on Monday. I'm concerned some of these outbreaks will get significantly bigger when schools go back and I don't understand the variant impact on spread, where these are not all B.1.617.2. Selfishly, I'm also concerned about the risk of isolation periods, for DS nursery in particular.

PatriciaHolm · 04/06/2021 16:59

The England hospitalisation picture is very mixed.

Indeed - in the North West, the 7 day average of admissions is up 7% on the week, and beds occupied up 10%. That's still considerably lower than the growth rate in cases has been for several weeks, but its not great.

wintertravel1980 · 04/06/2021 17:01

DD's nursery has just sent an email suggesting that we all do LFTs this weekend.

My DD's nursery and the whole primary school completely avoided Covid during the winter wave (not a single child had to isolate after a contact at school - very few confirmed cases were children already staying at home and isolating with their families). I can only hope we will be equally lucky again this time.

NannyAndJohn · 04/06/2021 17:02

4 day doubling time.

So on the fateful day of 21st June we'll be at 100,000 cases a day.

Hello lockdown.

PatriciaHolm · 04/06/2021 17:05

We've just had an email saying masks back in school (secondary) as of Monday in our area - interesting, as we are not in an area of any particular concern at all, but have had some rapid growth the last week from a low base so it seems PHE here are being proactive.

NannyAndJohn · 04/06/2021 17:07

In the other hand, it's reassuring to see that some on the so-called "Good News Thread" have finally woken up.

lonelyplanet · 04/06/2021 17:08

I'm not sure Bolton does look that reassuring. The number of pcr tests has gone down considerably; this could be due to fewer people with symptoms (which is obviously positive) or due to surge testing being scaled back. The positivity rate however, is still increasing so the drop in cases might just be down to fewer tests being carried out.

Don’t think we ever went to sleep mind , we celebrate good news in the good news thread and worry in the non good news threads. We’re capable of separating the good from the bad news. Unlike some people that only see the bad news
Bordois · 04/06/2021 17:10

Stop shit stirring.

The good news thread was never about denying what was happening it was simply about reporting any good news amongst all the shit going on

starfish4 · 04/06/2021 17:16

Students will be vaccinated where their doctors are registered. My friend's DD had to do a five hour journey. DD will have her first vaccine near to us. Her doctors anticipate inviting them mid June so hopefully can get second one in August. If not, I think she'll delay going back as she wants her vaccine (7 hour train journey).

KickBishopBrennanUpTheArse · 04/06/2021 17:35

My dd had the opposite experience starfish. She's still registered at her go at home but has had both vaccine doses at a centre in her uni city 5 mins from her halls.

She just registered on the national booking website and put in her uni postcode. She was eligible due to volunteering she does when home with vulnerable clients and had a letter from the charity with an address from local to her home. A flatmate who has had asthma did the same.
