This Indian variant is a disaster. I had thought that, with cases so far down, and the vaccine roll out going so well, that things would be back to normal a bit soon. But cases are up, hospitalisations are up, and the hospital in Bolton has gone from having 13 covid patients to 33 in a week. They're discharging everyone possible to brace for an admissions surge. I could cry my fucking eyes out. DH was so ill from covid, FIL died from it, and the cost to everyone's mental health is incalculable - plus the economy surely can't survive another lockdown. Selfishly, it looks unlikely that my DD will get her birthday party. I'm so fed up with it all.

Me too OP.

My mood is not helped by all the people on other threads living in hotspots bragging that because it "guidance not law" they will be off on their half term holidays in the UK as planned.

Well thanks for that! So we can all be in the same boat with the Indian variant soon. Brilliant!

This is why "personal responsibility" will not work. People are selfish

Bluntness100 · 25/05/2021 20:19

Really? Is this sarcastic? Are you ok? It’s clearly not a disaster. In fact we are in a fantastic position.

PurpleDaisies · 25/05/2021 20:19

The guidance on this has been absolutely all over the place (thank you once again, crappy government communications department). It’s pretty hard for people to take personal responsibility when the guidance wasn’t even announced and local directors of public health have been saying there are no travel restrictions.

Because it is only guidance, they’re unlikely to get a refund on any holidays they’ve booked.

Don’t blame the people. Blame the government.

WaterBottle123 · 25/05/2021 20:22

Hospitalisations aren't up OP. Nor are deaths. The vaccine works. Where are you getting your info?

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 25/05/2021 20:23

The government messaging has been crap yes.

But that doesn't take away from the fact that people living in areas with the covid variant are planning to go on holiday next week regardless.

They know they live in an area with a new variant and have been advised not to leave the area and they are doing it anyway.

That is selfish and the government being a shower of shit doesn't take away from that. Even if the guidance had been announced properly these people would still be doing it.

I've got everything crossed that the vaccines keep this at bay (and I'm so glad it's looking good so far)

PurpleDaisies · 25/05/2021 20:24

You’d be prepared to lose the cost of a week away when it’s only guidance not to go?

DixonD · 25/05/2021 20:25

I saw a headline that the Bolton hospital was getting busy, but COVID admissions were down.

XenoBitch · 25/05/2021 20:26

Avoid the news and MSM. I have done that for months and it has helped a lot.

Minstermouse · 25/05/2021 20:28

No, it just isn’t.

All vaccines are highly effective against it. Please, just stop with the catastrophising and get your free vaccine, open to all ages in areas where infection is high. No appointment necessary.

Exactly. We are amongst the most privileged, and protected people on the planet.
In areas where infections are rising anyone, of any age, can be vaccinated without appointment.
If you are posting from Niger or Mali, you have a point and I apologise.

Brainygaga · 25/05/2021 20:35

I'm getting a bit sick of reading sneery comments on here about people in areas of concern daring to want to have a bit of life back! I am in one of these areas and we have been in restrictions practically the whole way through. Government messaging has been a total mess so no, given that I am double jabbed, testing twice weekly and generally a sensible human being i am not changing my plans and losing money next week. Given that the indian variant has been in the country for weeks and people have been moving about freely any restrictions would be quite frankly arbitrary. So when you are posting on these threads even if you don't agree that we should be allowed to have the same freedoms as the rest of the country please could you try and have a bit of compassion in the way that you post...

Ugzbugz · 25/05/2021 20:36

There is another thread saying the government has back tracked on those certain areas.

picturesandpickles · 25/05/2021 20:40

Sorry you feel this way OP. And sorry you had such an awful experience with covid, and sorry for your loss Flowers.

I think what makes me worried is we have the scientific knowledge, but the government are an absolutely useless shambles. Today's episode is hardly confidence inspiring. I think we will know a lot more in a couple of weeks' time, by then the hospitalisation patterns on the hotspots will be clear, we will see whethere it has spread and how widely, we will have more data on vaccine efficacy/escape.

I guess what I would say is try to take it one day at a time and maybe the data will be more positive than some of us fear.

newnortherner111 · 25/05/2021 20:45

There are still people dying sadly, however the number is getting less and especially in proportion to the number diagnosed with the virus. The vaccination programme is still rolling out at pace.

The government messaging or non-messaging does not help I agree.

Minstermouse · 25/05/2021 20:46

Brainygaga

We’re just shy of Preston. No-one we know is getting in a state. Our only concern is our youngest, 18, who’s asthmatic. Our eldest, 27, had their jab last week so our 18 year old will probably be done within the month. Until then, we’ll be careful 🤷‍♀️

Good friends had their 18 year old jabbed today in Blackburn at a walk in cd few. They don’t even live there, they just work at a local school.

I really don’t understand where yire coming from.

bubblebath62636 · 25/05/2021 20:46

Op, don't believe everything you hear/read/see.

Personally I think this variant is a lie, constructed to amp up vaccination rates.

Overthebow · 25/05/2021 20:46

Cases are up a bit but not much at all, the are still very low. Today’s cases are only very slightly up on last Tuesdays, the vaccines work against the variant and the rollout is going very fast. It’s actually looking quite positive.

Minstermouse · 25/05/2021 20:46

Eek, posted too soon.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 25/05/2021 20:47

Yes I would.

PieElla · 25/05/2021 20:48

Why not have a search for all these nonsense posts? You'll find fifty thousand or so, all predicting the end of the world

U.K. vaccine uptake has been brilliant. Why would the government fake a variant to make things more difficult for themselves as today’s shambles shows?

What a load of utter nonsense.
