This Indian variant is a disaster. I had thought that, with cases so far down, and the vaccine roll out going so well, that things would be back to normal a bit soon. But cases are up, hospitalisations are up, and the hospital in Bolton has gone from having 13 covid patients to 33 in a week. They're discharging everyone possible to brace for an admissions surge. I could cry my fucking eyes out. DH was so ill from covid, FIL died from it, and the cost to everyone's mental health is incalculable - plus the economy surely can't survive another lockdown. Selfishly, it looks unlikely that my DD will get her birthday party. I'm so fed up with it all.

@Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady

You’d be prepared to lose the cost of a week away when it’s only guidance not to go?

Yes I would.

That’s very easy to say when you don’t have the money on the line.

I wouldn’t judge anyone who went in those circumstances.

We’re just shy of Preston. No-one we know is getting in a state. Our only concern is our youngest, 18, who’s asthmatic. Our eldest, 27, had their jab last week so our 18 year old will probably be done within the month. Until then, we’ll be careful 🤷‍♀️

Good friends had their 18 year old jabbed today in Blackburn at a walk in centre. They don’t even live there, they just work at a local school.

I really don’t understand where you’re coming from.
Anyone in vulnerable areas can just pitch up and get a free vaccine.

In no way, shape or form are we “screwed” so please, just stop being stupid.

🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

roguetomato · 25/05/2021 20:51

Wow, where did you get such a negative view?
I don't think we are screwed, we just need to hang in there and be patient until more people are vaccinated.

Poorlykitten · 25/05/2021 20:55

@bubblebath62636 this is lunacy. Jesus, where do you people get your ideas from?

XingMing · 25/05/2021 20:56

With the disclaimer that I am old and double jabbed already, I think your decision depends on where you live. If you live in an area where there's a constant flow of people visiting back and forth from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, and you're expecting visits from family members, then I would hope you'd play things cautiously. If you live in a rural backwater, go for it.

Nataliafalka · 25/05/2021 20:57

Please! The variant is not out of control. The vaccines are effective against the variant. Those getting ill either haven’t had the jab or have only had one. The virus is not running rampant and it will be controlled if we all get vaccinated

babbaloushka · 25/05/2021 20:58

@bubblebath62636

Op, don't believe everything you hear/read/see.

Personally I think this variant is a lie, constructed to amp up vaccination rates.

There's always one.
Poorlykitten · 25/05/2021 20:58

Or two...or three...or hundreds on mumsnet. 😞

Ha - this made me laugh. I work directly with the people involved with fighting this variant. It is very real.
Poorlykitten · 25/05/2021 21:00

Conspiracy theories abound on here.

BettyUnderswoob · 25/05/2021 21:04

ZERO deaths yesterday and a seven day average of ONE.

At one point it was 1800 ish in a day.

No, we’re not screwed.

AlmostSummer21 · 25/05/2021 21:04

@Bluntness100

Really? Is this sarcastic? Are you ok? It’s clearly not a disaster. In fact we are in a fantastic position.
Just stop it would you. Stop hiding behind your posting name to post hurtful unnecessary shite.

Clearly the OP isn't ok. Her DH was very ill from Covid, her FIL died from
It and she's clearly stressed and upset.

Behave.

Flaxmeadow · 25/05/2021 21:04

Deaths and hospitalizations are going down. Deaths (7 day average) are the lowest since the 15th of March 2020, a week before the first lockdown.

Bolton does have high numbers, but that is unusual, and also much higher numbers than the other areas of concern.

There is more testing in Bolton, and other areas, and so more having a positive result

PurpleDaisies · 25/05/2021 21:05

Those getting ill either haven’t had the jab or have only had one.

That’s not strictly true. Some double vaccinated people have become ill. That’s to be expected though and it doesn’t mean the vaccines don’t generally work-no vaccination is 100% effective.

We do need to make sure our cases don’t sky rocket now so the small proportion of people for whom the vaccine isn’t effective and those who have only had one vaccine doesn’t translate into large numbers in hospital. At the moment things look ok and there are plenty of reasons for optimism. We’re at a really important time for the public health messaging to be really clear though and the government seem determined to act like clowns.

3cats4poniesandababy · 25/05/2021 21:06

The vaccines work against the varient. If there is any problem/increase in serious cases it is those who were in the top 10 priority groups. They were a priority for a reason. You can't keep whole cities lockdown because some old and vulnerable people don't want to help themselves by having the vaccine.

Before I get slated I understand some vulnerable can't have a the vaccine but a lot of them could as demonstrated by the large queues that suddenly appeared in the areas with outbreaks. If they had taken the offer months ago when they should have then hospitisations would be lower.

Yes, of course it’s real but the (free, readily available) vaccines are highly effective against the so-called India variant (as it is against all known others).
If you really work in public health you’ll know that too.

So, I strongly suspect you don’t. Stop spreading BS.

AlmostSummer21 · 25/05/2021 21:07

@DixonD

I saw a headline that the Bolton hospital was getting busy, but COVID admissions were down.
No they're not, they're up week on week. There were slides on the politics channel today. Fortunately we were at a low starting point and the vaccines appear to be doing a great job, but hospitalisations are increasing in Bolton. I'm sorry I don't remember the exact numbers, the slides are probably available online.
Brainygaga · 25/05/2021 21:08

@minstermouse I never said we were screwed - i am not the OP? My post clearly said that as i'm double jabbed, testing and sensible i'm carrying on as normal despite living in an area of concern. What is starting to grate is those NOT in areas of concern thinking that those of us that are have to sit in our living rooms for evermore. I am not in 'a state' and i think you misread my post.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 25/05/2021 21:10

Op I think you need to step away from the news.
We are doing fantastic with the vaccine.
Bolton Royal do not have masses of covid cases!
And people are trying to get some semblance of normality.

AlmostSummer21 · 25/05/2021 21:10

@hamstersarse

Please watch or read something about rational thinking
You as well, just stop posting nasty crap on thread where people are worried. The OP has had her husband seriously ill with Covid & her FIL die. She's worried we'll end up like Dec-March again. If you can't help, just scroll on by.

Apologies, I think I did. Sorry.

We’re near Preston, which will be next. Not concerned.

Calmdown14 · 25/05/2021 21:11

For context, hospital numbers are just over 1,000. Earlier in the year they were 40k.
I like to look at the figures rather than read the hype. The numbers in the north west have gone up but are still low and seem to be dropping again.
We should be cautious but there's no need for panic.

PumpkinPie2016 · 25/05/2021 21:13

I don't think things are that bad OP. Honestly, I don't.

Cases are up slightly but the rate is still very low -about 23/100000(0.023%). Cases themselves aren't necessarily important- hospitalisations and deaths are what matters.

Deaths are thankfully down. If you look by date of death, it's very low e.g. 2/3/4. When you compare that to 1000+ in Jan, we are in a massively better place.

Hospitalisations look ok too? Latest on govt website (which lags a bit) says Bolton have 2/3 maybe 4/5 admissions a day with 24 people in hospital. I think there may be 30 in hospital now as the data on the govt site was last updated on 18th May. So, yes, a rise but 30 isn't that many, again, when compared to hundreds previously. Some other areas have 25ish people in.

The vaccines work. About 44% of people have had 2 doses and 72% one does. That's great and more and more people are having it.

The media do like stirring up doom and I have found it more helpful to look at the data myself.

Where’s this figure relaying to? It doesn’t seem to fit the data on the covid dashboard.
