Is anyone else still getting their DC to change clothes when they get home from school?

Just that, really. I can't work out whether I'm being ridiculous and storing up mental health issues for my poor kids in the future, or just being sensible. I am already feeling like I've mucked this up and scarred them for life, so please don't tear strips off me, but I'd be really grateful for a quick straw poll.

My 2 teenage ds always get out of their uniforms as soon as they get in. Not covid related, they've just had enough of anything to do with school & want to be comfy.
I usually find their school ties & socks sitting on the doormat or flung somewhere random so I think they start the process as soon as the front door shuts Grin
I think loads of kids do it. Your dc will be absolutely fine.

YetAnotherWalk · 20/05/2021 16:35

We never did and they both choose to stay in uniform on school days.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 20/05/2021 16:49

Yes.But that's because we've always done it , nothing to do with Covid. It's just our routine.

GintyMcGinty · 20/05/2021 16:51

no we have never done this

LadyPenelope68 · 20/05/2021 16:55

I’m a teacher. I still have a shower and change my clothes as soon as I get home. Think I’ll stuck with it now as well, as feels more like I mark the divide between work and home, plus feels a much longer, leisurely evening as well.

Nohomemadecandles · 20/05/2021 17:01

Yes but we always have. They smell of school when they come home so clothes straight into the washer. School smell is weird! Grin

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 20/05/2021 17:03

I was, but we stopped recently. It occurred to me that if they were going to catch Covid of a classmate, changing their clothes after 5 hours in their company wouldn't really help, so all I was doing was creating more washing for myself.

SemiFeralDalek · 22/05/2021 13:34

Yes. But more to do with just getting clean and comfy before tea than covid avoidance. Then just a face wash before bed. Top and tail and into clean uniform every morning.

Dh works on public transport /as security so has a shower when he gets in usually. Because people are fucking disgusting.

Girlmama3 · 22/05/2021 13:40

Yes. I did before covid. Why would they want to sit in their uniform all evening?

SpnBaby1967 · 22/05/2021 13:45

Nope.

Kids will occasionally change into other clothes or PJs when they get home if their clothes got muddy but otherwise never bothered.

My friend, her DP and both kids all change into PJs as soon as they are done with school & work. I always find it slightly weird if I pay an evening visit.

Monkeytennis97 · 22/05/2021 13:47

Yes.DH and I do. Both teachers.

SnowyPetals · 23/05/2021 14:56

No, and never have. The slogan isn't "Hands, Face, Space, Fresh air and Laundry" is it?!

TropicalFairyCake · 23/05/2021 15:51

At primary both my kids uniform were perfectly normal clothes so fine for sitting at home in the eveningn in! Might do pjs after dinner if having a bath. Secondary child took blazer off but rest of uniform was okay for mooching about in.

I love countries with more practical uniforms (trainers over "school shoes) and home clothes or comfy clothes partly for this reason.

Thewiseoneincognito · 23/05/2021 16:06

Covid aside surely kids school uniforms are dirty under the best conditions, get them changed it’s gross! I hated being in my uniform at home as kid, I always felt scruffy sitting watching CITV in uniform. I had a friend who lived on an estate nearby who played out in theirs 😳

stayathomer · 23/05/2021 16:11

We do but not because of colvard it is something we've always done. I do think it's mad that people give their opinion as if it's absolutely fact, surface transmission could possibly be a thing, it's just if we go down that road it could drive people crazy!

User3456 · 23/05/2021 16:17

Yes. DS has a shower and gets changed as soon as he gets in from school since covid started. It's actually working really well for us as a general routine as it was always a battle to get him to have a shower each day anyway. So now that's what he does, no fuss, it's great. I do think fomite risks are less than originally thought so it might not be making much difference, however it works for us and if it's even a tiny reduction in risk that's all good for now as far as I am concerned. I don't think you will have mucked them up/scarred them for life. The past 12 months generally haven't been that great and we've all muddled through as best we can.

lanbro · 23/05/2021 16:27

Mine have always got changed after school, nothing to do with covid. It's just part of our routine, uniform off, casual clothes on, I did it myself when I used to wear a uniform, both school and work

Killahangilion · 23/05/2021 16:42

Yes, always have done. I used to change out of uniform when I got home and that was years ago.
However, they wear the same uniform clothes several days running apart from socks and pants.
I'm not washing uniform after it's only been worn a few hours.

tentosix · 23/05/2021 16:44

Hand wash only but we do that anyway

TropicalFairyCake · 23/05/2021 17:01

I love threads like this. School uniform is simulaniously...

  • Only worn a few hours so can be reused several days if taken off.
  • So disgusting it has to be taken off straight away to wash!

We don't rewear shirts/polo shirts but they do rewear a pinafore or skirt. Blazer is reworn.

autumnboys · 23/05/2021 17:03

Mine always have. I’d rather they got dinner down scruffy clothes than their uniforms.

Taswama · 23/05/2021 17:06

Nope. It was proven months ago that the virus doesn't stay on surfaces, so changing clothes / wiping down surfaces / quarantining homework etc is pretty pointless.

NotBot · 23/05/2021 21:41

Nope. I did this for the first two days my DD returned to nursery & then realised it was ridiculous, I didn’t care & I didn’t have time 😂 I’m not remotely anxious about covid personally. I accepted once DD was back at nursery, we opened up the ‘risk’. And it certainly wasn’t from her clothes! If she caught it at nursery, her sneezing or coughing on me was how I was going to catch it, not her clothes!

We used to wash her hands frequently but we don’t even do that anymore really.. just at appropriate times, before eating etc..

Wellbythebloodyhell · 23/05/2021 22:18

I like my dc to get changed as soon as they come in from school, nothing to do with covid just something we've always done. tbh its more to do with if its still clean i can give it a febreeze and get another day out of it or if I'm unlucky and its dirty I can put it on a quick wash ready for another day. I do use the dettol spray and wear stuff on the blazers every day but more because I like the smell than it being a covid preventative measure.

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 23/05/2021 22:26

No. Surely if Covid was on their clothes they would have it anyway. Most transmission is airborne.
