Is anyone else still getting their DC to change clothes when they get home from school?

Just that, really. I can't work out whether I'm being ridiculous and storing up mental health issues for my poor kids in the future, or just being sensible. I am already feeling like I've mucked this up and scarred them for life, so please don't tear strips off me, but I'd be really grateful for a quick straw poll.

Mine have never changed.
My DS2 takes all his clothes off when he gets home (but doesn't put new ones on - he just stays in his pants)
My DS1 leaves his school trousers on and takes off his shirt (but has a vest on)

C152 · 20/05/2021 10:00

I've never done this, unless the clothes are dirty/wet.

amicissimma · 20/05/2021 10:04

We've always changed into 'normal' clothes when coming in from school or work. Nothing to do with Covid.

And I've always insisted on handwashing when we come in the door, specially after a journey on public transport.

MonsterMash2210 · 20/05/2021 10:04

No, I never did make my son.

Sometimes he will want or need to get changed, but Covid doesn’t come into it.

On the outside I have remained very calm and indifferent about Covid, especially around my son.

Pinksmartie230316 · 20/05/2021 10:36

No, and I never have. They get changed out of choice into more comfy clothes.

daisyducky · 20/05/2021 10:50

Yes but not because of covid. Comfy clothes as the uniform is difficult to dry and can't be tumbled. So I get DC to change to keep it cleaner for school. Messy eaters 😂

ChocOrange1 · 20/05/2021 10:53

Didn't even know this was a thing.

Thefifthbeatle · 20/05/2021 10:53

Thanks very much for the responses. That solves that one then.

Since covid my school age kids get home and take a shower straight away and then get into something comfy. I’m keeping that habit not because of covid but because it saves me the arguments over showering / bathing nearer to bedtime and it just gets that faff out of the way and they can get on with their afternoon / evening. If I make them do it last thing they drag it out because they don’t want to go to bed whereas if they do it straight after school they get on with it quickly so they can start playing. I bath my younger child just before he goes to bed.

I was giving them all clean uniform each day and I’ve recently stopped doing that. They come home looking clean most days and so I don’t think they need a change of uniform each day anymore.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 20/05/2021 11:11

The advice at the start was to change, wash and have fresh uniform each day. Little from home or schools was to go either way bar essentials but that seems to have relaxed now on recent newsletters.

Kisforkaylied · 20/05/2021 11:14

We've always got changed after school, even pre-covid. Uniform isn't comfy for hanging round the house / playing outside! I don't wash uniform every day any more though, gave up on that ages ago.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 20/05/2021 11:21

Nope. Never had done. Never will. What ridiculousness. You do know the science shows covid on items like clothes is extremely low risk. Otherwise all those masks thrown away would need to be in clinical waste bins!!

Daily showers are terrible for the envoy and got your skin and totally unnecessary. Every other day is fine.
MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 20/05/2021 11:22

Environment not envoy

Comefromaway · 20/05/2021 11:38

Ds is at college. He wears the same pair of joggers for 3 days until I nag him to change them. He's think I was loopy if I got him to change when he got in from college every day. (He does wear a clean t shirt every day.)

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 20/05/2021 11:56

We do. Clothes straight off & into the shower.

It is because of covid, (I notice nobody scoffing has posted a link as to the relative likelihood of surface transmission), but they like it now.

You do you, OP.

DappledThings · 20/05/2021 12:18

Never have done. Never did when I was a child either, couldn't be arsed.

Intrigued by those who think there is a school stink. I've never noticed it.

Theonlyoneiknow · 20/05/2021 12:19

No, I did when they went back to school last August but not anymore

freeez · 20/05/2021 12:21

Yes, straight out of uniform and into the shower. This started off as a covid precaution but it also works well to get the daily wash out of the way without too much resistance.

OliveTree75 · 20/05/2021 12:23

We always change into comfy clothes but not because of covid

PeraltasWife · 20/05/2021 12:23

Yes, but only because I was always brought up to get changed into 'normal' clothes when you get home from school. Nothing to do with Covid

Seriouslymole · 20/05/2021 15:01

Yes, but not because of covid but because they only have a certain number of school jumpers and if they get dirty then it's a pita to wash them mid-week.

TortoiseShed · 20/05/2021 15:45

@Seriouslymole

Yes, this is part of the reason we do it too. We end up having to wash mid week anyway as mine are still quite young (6&3). Between them, they've lost so many school jumpers and I refuse to buy any more this term tbh.
TheKeatingFive · 20/05/2021 15:57

Nope. Never did it in the first place.

They’ve realised that transmission from surfaces is extremely unlikely and something they wildly overstated initially. I don’t think anyone in the know was ever concerned about transmission via soft surfaces, it was just part of the optics to make people feel in control early on.

ISaidDontLickTheBin · 20/05/2021 16:22

Not school age, but we still put DC age 3 straight in the bath after nursery and then into clean clothes/PJ's like we were told to when they returned to nursery after lockdown 1. These days it's more habit and getting rid of mud/paint than Covid though.
