Is anyone else still getting their DC to change clothes when they get home from school?

Just that, really. I can't work out whether I'm being ridiculous and storing up mental health issues for my poor kids in the future, or just being sensible. I am already feeling like I've mucked this up and scarred them for life, so please don't tear strips off me, but I'd be really grateful for a quick straw poll.

Dc change soon as they get in, something they've always done. Nothing to do with Covid. Very sensitive noses here and none of us like that weird school smell which lingers in worn uniform.

TheSmallAssassin · 20/05/2021 00:13

I always asked mine to change out of uniform when they got in/before tea, especially when in junior school, to keep them clean-ish, but don't bother now and wouldn't do it just because of COVID.

Hidingunderablanket · 20/05/2021 00:23

Yes, but I always have. Mainly because they stink of school and school stink. It’s grim, honestly I can’t bear it.
Covid-wise I make then wash their hands once home but that’s more because the sanitiser they have in school is horrible and dd seems to react to it, so need it gone.

strangeshapedpotato · 20/05/2021 00:30

By all means tell your kids to change - my mum did lol.

But please don't tell them it's in case of virus on their clothes! It really isn't a thing. Surface transmission of covid has actually never been observed - it's a theoretical possibility, but lab tests have shown it's quite unlikely.

RainbowCrayons · 20/05/2021 03:10

My mum made me change out of my uniform back in the 90s so you can totally do it it a non-covid related way.

Next year DS goes to nursery but the uniform is just shirts/joggers and a t-shirt. (not UK, he won't freeze!) so I may not change him after. It depends how messy he is but if he was in something smarter like a shirt I would for just for comfort. Covid doesn't really factor into it as the risk is so low.

DNTSleepingDragons · 20/05/2021 04:17

Nope, never did

AIMummy · 20/05/2021 04:32

Yes but they did anyway before the pandemic as I feel school uniform is not very comfortable clothing to lounge around in (I used to do the same when at school).

SavingsQuestions · 20/05/2021 04:51

No. Surface transmission, particularly on clothes isn't a thing.

However mine will change after a bit if going out or into pjs if they feel like it. No hard and fast rule.

Mandalay246 · 20/05/2021 04:55

I don't have kids, but when I was school age I changed the minute I got home from school from my uniform into something comfortable! Ditto when I was working, always changed straight away. It's just a ritual of getting home and getting comfy.

I'm the same. Spending the late afternoon/evening in school clothes sounds awful to me. I change out of my work clothes the minute I get home, always have.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/05/2021 05:05

Never did it at any point. Sometimes he gets changed into lounge wear anyway just to be comfortable.

DorotheaHomeAlone · 20/05/2021 05:08

No they don’t and never did.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 20/05/2021 05:12

I never did, not due to covid anyway. They normally get changed into something more comfortable but not because of infection risk.

picturesandpickles · 20/05/2021 05:16

@GreyhoundG1rl

Well, they do, but only because they always did.
Yes here too, you get home, get changed. Always was like this.
CarrieBlue · 20/05/2021 05:40

Yes. We’ve always changed once we get home, usually due to some other activity going on but not always washed uniform. We do now. There are 4 of us in 4 different schools and it seems sensible to reduce risk when it’s something we pretty much do anyway,

Others may be dismissive, and it may not be something they’ve ever done, but it brings a little peace of mind to me and my family when we’ve had no choice but to be out mixing the whole way through with no mitigation for most of the time. I’d probably not bother with washing each day if we’d not been mixing so much, but changing is a normal thing here anyway.

CarrieBlue · 20/05/2021 05:42

We don’t all shower when we get in now though which we did when rates were at their highest.

spaceghetto · 20/05/2021 06:19

Yes, since before covid. Ds says the boys in his class like to sit in the urinals with their trousers on... they then sit on chairs, the carpet etc.

Nonmaquillee · 20/05/2021 06:20

No, never.

Roonerspismed · 20/05/2021 06:22

No and it still uses me that reading books are “quarantined” for three days

Nonsense.

Oblomov21 · 20/05/2021 06:26

No. Never did.
Didn't wipe down shopping either.

megletthesecond · 20/05/2021 06:36

Not anymore. I think surface transmission has been shown to be very low risk.

Lockdownlifting12344555 · 20/05/2021 06:37

Nope never a thing and DS went throughout all the lockdowns. Never wiped down shopping either! Nor “quarantined” anything

HollyBollyBooBoo · 20/05/2021 06:37

Yes but nothing to do with Covid just to be comfortable for 6 hours before bed!

roguetomato · 20/05/2021 06:44

Yes, but as others said, it just became a habit and dc found out it's way comfier to get changed into something else than school uniform. It just became the norm. And I never wiped down shopping either, so nothing really to do with covid anxiety.

kowari · 20/05/2021 06:46

Still? Never did. My teen didn't even change everyday when in as a keyworker child.

StuntNun · 20/05/2021 06:47

No but my kids quite often want to get changed into "civvies" as DH calls them, when they get home from school. My mum always insisted my brothers and I got changed when we got home so we wouldn't get our school uniform dirty. I don't think that's an unusual thing to do.
