What is going on in Bolton?

Cloudsurfing · 18/05/2021 19:53

Over 300/100,000 rate now, and still rising. This surely can't just be the Indian variant can it? Nowhere else seems to be this high and 86 counties now have the variant. Will the government do a local lockdown? surely they can't let people meet inside when cases are so high there?

The most ill

Roussette · 19/05/2021 08:00

I am very very strongly pro vaccination, but I found Hancock's victim blaming very distasteful.
Perhaps if the Government has closed the border when they should've done, Bolton would not be in this position?

BoomChicka · 19/05/2021 08:01

Are there any reports on the % of people with symptoms? Are these cases being picked up on routine LFT then PCR? Obviously the small number in hospital are ill, but are the rest?

Nohomemadecandles · 19/05/2021 08:02

@BTV2000

So is the general consensus regarding the Bolton situation, is that the new variant isn't as rife or as bad as the media are making it out to be?
No. The bubbles have been bursting at schools in fairly wealthy "naice" areas too. At a rate of knots a few weeks ago. The rate of being actually poorly seems very low compared to the high figures of infection. The media fuelling horrible division.
Bluesheep8 · 19/05/2021 08:08

*Apparently the area I live in (south of England) is in the top ten areas for cases of the Indian variant. Very affluent, very "naice", very white, lowish housing density and lots of WFH.

Not the sort of demographic people are associating with it.*

Precisely. Because it's not the area/demographic that it's convenient to blame in order to detract from the fact that borders weren't closed quickly enough.

CutieBear · 19/05/2021 08:11

Cases may be rising, but hospitalisations and deaths are not. The lateral flow tests aren’t accurate and weren’t supposed to be used like this (as in used on masses of healthy people). So many false positives and school children in very large secondary schools are told to take several tests a week even though they don’t have symptoms.

We need to learn to live with this virus, like we have with other viruses and diseases. Not many people are dying within 28 days of having a positive test.

mrscee · 19/05/2021 08:13

It's my mil who thinks shes far to healthy to catch Covid despite being an ex smoker and getting a chest infection every year. She lives in Bolton and she been regularly meeting with other people throughout the lockdowns.

I know.

I was responding to someone mentioning that there were vaccinated people also in hospital.

And yes there are. However only 1 is fully vaccinated. The other 5 are partially vaccinated. And as a pp mentioned, we don't know how long ago those people had their vaccine - it may be less than 3 weeks ago, so not necessarily in their systems properly at the time of catching covid,

User135644 · 19/05/2021 08:17

@Gilly12345

Restrictions should be in place but unfortunately there is Andy Burnham there who will appose anything that is suggested.
Andy Burnham isn't the Prime Minister, so he can pipe down.
countrygirl99 · 19/05/2021 08:21
**@countrygirl99* @TheAlphaandtheOmega* @KaySam that’s awful. I would email the local MP and Matt Hancock if I were you - let them know the specific areas where there’s an issue, and their teams will have data to know whether uptake is low in these areas so could get a vaccine bus/local centre set up to improve uptake if it’s low due to poor access. At least I hope that’s how it would work, but there will always be oversights and it’s important to flag them as often as possible.
Our Toey MP is a brown noser with a massive majority. It would be a complete waste of time.

DumplingsAndStew · 19/05/2021 08:23

It's frustrating to read some complaints about having to travel an hour to get vaccinated. So what? An hour? Oh noes.

Some people need to prioritise. Not everything can be on your doorstep.

The Bedford MP and the mayor are brilliant and very on the ball. Matt H has a record of ignoring them.

Sadly we are North Beds and our guy only seems interested in the proposed rail route.
Zzelda · 19/05/2021 08:25

Why are the government to blame for not closing the border? WHY are PEOPLE not expected to take responsibility for unnecessary travel?

Because that would be a cop-out. You might just as well ask why should government have any responsibility for dealing with crime, why not cast the blame on people and leave it at that.

GnomeDePlume · 19/05/2021 08:25

@TheAlphaandtheOmega we had the same (also East Northamptonshire). For me to get to the vaccination centre in Northampton would have taken between 2 hours 10 minutes and 2 hours 30 minutes by bus each way. Also the bus fare would have been around £15 (given that I would would have wanted to get home again). It took 20 minutes by car.

Piggywaspushed · 19/05/2021 08:26

Oh God, yes : you got the one kicked out of Bedford didn't you? When poor old Alastair Burt was ousted by his own party.

Bedford MP now is really great : he ahs been personally translating vaccine info and knocking on doors.

KaySam · 19/05/2021 08:27

So you think it’s tough some have to travel, not everyone has a car, or able to travel through disability or childcare as you’re not supposed to take children or can afford the bus fare.

I’m disabled I couldn’t have gone alone,so had to wait for the husband to be available, otherwise I wouldn’t have had it until now.

Now closer places are open people are being vaccinated.

It should be if you're 90
Roussette · 19/05/2021 08:28

WHY are PEOPLE not expected to take responsibility for unnecessary travel?

Because if your Government tells you it's OK to come home from India after visiting your family.... you do just that.
It's quite simple to work out.

C8H10N4O2 · 19/05/2021 08:28

Oh well that must be true then.

The numbers don't supporting the government's attempt to blame patients for being ill rather than their own failure to manage incoming flights.

Being "eligible" doesn't mean vaccines are accessible, especially where people are not online, able bodied and car owning.

The overall numbers racked up as well provisioned areas were vaccinating the young and healthy back in Jan/Feb when my CEV 90yr old relative could only get an appointment an hour's drive away booked online. That requires someone else to book it and transport and the patient to be strong enough to withstand a 3hr round trip.

Piggywaspushed · 19/05/2021 08:29

I distinctly get the impression that the IV was seeded in Bedford via funerals : not sure whether in the area or whether funerals in India.

You do realise that for dome people even that's very difficult. There are only 5 buses a day from where I live so if the available times are early or late as they were when I got my appointment there is no option other than a taxi which is £25 each way, may be do able for someone with good income but that would wipe out the food budget for some. And it took me 3 days of checking online every hour or so to get that. You can't do that in many jobs even if you have Internet access. Please think outside your own little bubble.
Roussette · 19/05/2021 08:31

Given Matt Hancock blatantly lied on Andrew Marr on Sunday about India compared to Pakistant and Bangladesh, I don't believe a word he says.

x2boys · 19/05/2021 08:33

It may well be the case that people have to travel to get to vaccines ,how ever as I keep saying as an actual Bolton resident ,who lives slap bang in the middle of the local area of highest concern, the local vaccine hub is a walkable distance,or a short bus drive ,and bus,s are very frequent .

You do realise that the most vulnerable people are least likely to be able to book and travel long journeys or have the money to pay for them? And in some cases there was no public transport route to the designated centre?

Some people need open their smug little eyes.
