What is going on in Bolton?

Over 300/100,000 rate now, and still rising. This surely can't just be the Indian variant can it? Nowhere else seems to be this high and 86 counties now have the variant. Will the government do a local lockdown? surely they can't let people meet inside when cases are so high there?

Its been confirmed many times in interviews and by local twitter pages that the issue has been low uptake in certain postcodes of bolton

An extension of this - "Covid scepticism" - was also the focus of the local MP's Guardian piece, which I linked yesterday

Interestingly there's been absolutely no comment on that ...

Arbadacarba · 20/05/2021 12:35

Who will find the businesses who will go bust as a result?
Who will pay the wages of the people working in these businesses?

The damage across the board will be worse in the long run if we have wave after wave of the virus. The same question applies to many businesses that have been impacted by the lockdowns - they have had to rely on the government's furlough schemes etc.

Because people like to try and explain what is going on whilst having no local knowledge ,I live in BL3 I can tell you exactly what the problem is but most of my posts have been ignored 🙄
Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/05/2021 13:49

Unfortunately your comments will be ignored, x2boys, because rather than looking at the bigger picture some prefer to look only at those aspects which suit
Perhaps this could be a factor in Yasmin Qureshi's comments about racism receiving such massive attention, and those about "Covid scepticism" hardly any at all

To be clear, it's quite right that racism should be addressed wherever it happens; however these issues are rarely about just one thing, which is why I suggested a broader view can be worthwhile

SofiaMichelle · 20/05/2021 14:52

The problem isn't that people have been allowed to travel abroad on business, it's that there have been bugger all checks on the person actually doing the travelling.

It should be, and should have always been, properly policed with documentation from a registered business proving the person is an employee and proving their genuine need to travel.

The fact Instafuckwits have taken the piss, and other people have blatantly ignored the rules and just gone on holiday regardless, is the problem here.

It's totally unrealistic to say that no business travel should be allowed. It would be catastrophic for many businesses which generate huge income for the country and if this had been properly regulated and policed it would have been an insignificant risk.

Think about it: Instaidiots and the sort of people who blatantly disregard the rules and go on holiday when/where they shouldn't are not the sort of people who will diligently follow self-isolation rules etc, either. They've already proved that they don't believe the rules apply to them.

Those think for yourself types calling people sheeple have lots to answer for

NoMLMbots · 20/05/2021 18:04

@PrincessNutNuts

What's going on in Bolton isn't vaccine hesitancy. They have 95.7% first dose coverage of over 50s.

That's better than half the country.

If you look at the highest rates of vaccinated people and search cases in area you will see very low rates.... so vaccines work
x2boys · 20/05/2021 18:06

Several local schools ,have now had burst bubbles ,here we go again 🙄

happytoday73 · 20/05/2021 19:17

👋 At X2boys... Its a small world... I grew up in BL3 1...(which seems much better for cases than many bolton areas) and also have two boys 😁.. I'm glad you got your jab earlier.. My former neighbours truly didn't.

I now work relatively local and after a couple of months of calm in last two days have seen huge upturn in school bubbles popping and people being told to isolate... Its worrying as sooner and faster than I expected. 😱

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 20/05/2021 20:24

@Badyboo

Our vaccination centre is only 2 miles away but may as well have been on the moon for how accessible it was via public transport for people who can't walk or drive.
But surely cheap enough by Uber/taxi? Even for the most deprived?

How much closer to each & every person do you expect them to be able to put a vaccination centre?

Did they not have any community groups doing lifts? Taxis offering free vaccine transports?

AlmostSummer21 · 20/05/2021 20:38

@KaySam

Must have been bad luck for us,I eventually got lever chambers ,husband got middlebrook another family ended up going to Burnley. Probably depending on when we logged on to get the appintment.

It’s a nightmare here now though,we are being blamed for the virus yet I’ve heard some people won’t take the tests incase they’re positive and have to be off work and can’t afford to.

Problem is, I'm not sure how you fix that.

If they pay people for positive tests, that's going to incentivise some people to start licking people.
But people need to be able to a) afford to isolate and b) not be penalised at work for isolating.

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 20/05/2021 20:50

Yes, cases are rising, but deaths “with Covid19” are only in double figures in the UK

@CutieBear

Well rising cases is going to end up with rising hospital numbers & rising deaths.

Would you rather just wait & see how many deaths we have in another 28 days?

IcedPurple · 20/05/2021 20:57

Well rising cases is going to end up with rising hospital numbers & rising deaths.

Not when the most at risk have already been vaccinated.

3asAbird · 20/05/2021 21:04

Surely big issue rising primary age kids is many parents maybe under 40 and not vaccinated..

Kids are vectors he said but schools are safe.

What is going on in Bolton?
AlmostSummer21 · 20/05/2021 21:08

@Thewiseoneincognito

Sorry to dampen the flames of hate for Bolton but this isn’t solely down to Boltonians breaking rules, it’s the nature of the variant itself.

This situation is very different to previous outbreaks because of the higher transmissibility of the Indian variant.

You think the schools and supermarkets in Bolton are not the same as the ones in your town?

You think people in your town weren’t doing the ‘it’s only a quick brew and we were sat apart on two separate sofas’ indoors gatherings whilst we were told not to? The explosion of numbers are not indicative of mass rule breaking in one northern town, far from it.

The variant is easier to catch, much easier than the Kent one that spread very quickly here at Christmas. What is happening in Bolton will happen pretty much everywhere, it’s called exponential growth 📈 their numbers are higher because clearly someone brought in the variant there and didn’t follow and quarantine guidelines properly, or they did and this thing still managed to get out of control.

If we see this high rate of transmission continue around the country then every town and city will be in Bolton’s position in a matter of weeks especially now we are mixing more freely indoors and so many people travelled from India to the UK.

We may also end up being caught off guard by the rate the variant will progress. I expect Covid fatigue has started to set in for many people who may now pass off a cough or sore throat as being nothing more than a ‘summer’ cold over the coming few weeks because the numbers may appear lower when in actual fact they haven’t yet caught up. Add to the mix a false sense of security because they may have had a vaccine and we’re looking at a potentially difficult situation.

Yep they've been saying this for a couple of weeks now, hence the talk of another wave. They have said the IV will be the dominant variant within a couple of weeks!

We need to slow down the spread as much as possible do more people are fully vaccinated before it spreads too far.

It's come at a very bad time or rather Boris should have had the balls to stop the May 17 lifting of restrictions everywhere!! And everywhere with the IV should have been locked down harder to reduce its spread as much as possible while we get as many
People vaccinated as possible & have as much time as possible to let the vaccine do its thing!!

Watapalava · 20/05/2021 21:11

rising cases will not equal rising deaths at all given 90+% of hosptalisations andalmost all deaths were in group 1-9.

During the entire pandemic up to March 2021 (so part peak of second wave) only 89 people in England had died under 40 (without underlying issues)

89 out of 67 million people!!! No chance of lockdown or further restrictions

Watapalava · 20/05/2021 21:12

past peak

AlmostSummer21 · 20/05/2021 21:29

+The government will learn a big lesson about over promising to the public when variables are too high over this. Allowing May 17th to go ahead wasn’t just adding fuel to the fire, it was a flame thrower. Please stay vigilant everyone*

You're more optimistic about them
Learning from this, they have had plenty of opportunities to have learnt before now.

So angry with them

Bluntness100 · 20/05/2021 21:32

Cases are not rising, they have plateaued. The numbers being quoted for the Indian variant are cumulative. Cases have plateaued. Hospital admissions are declining and and deaths have plateaued at low single digits.

I think people are getting confused because the Indian variant numbers are cumulative, it’s total since it was detected in the Uk, it is not daily cases.

um I take it you haven't seen today's figures. Nearly 300 new cases. Massively up.

The local news wasn't particularly positive tonight ,and the Royal Bolton hospital have apparently opened another covid ward ,I'm trying to stay positive,but I have two kids that go to school in BL3 and BL4 I am fully vaccinated,but it is a concern .

Nohomemadecandles · 20/05/2021 21:50

Underlying health condition,s can be something like Diabetes ,high blood pressure ,you know manageable conditions in non covid times.

I believe so and that new kings academy in Great lever ,think they have cases at Smithills too.
