Well this is fun:

You can click on an area - such as say Bolton - and you can watch B1617.2 arriving in April then spreading out to the surrounding areas.

(It's nothing, nothing, nothing, then it suddenly bursts into colour.

And/or look at your own area and see if it's reached you yet.

covid19.sanger.ac.uk/lineages/raw?latitude=53.762878&longitude=-2.675077&zoom=6.82&area=E08000033&lineage=B.1.617.2&view=map&colorBy=p&date=2021-03-06

Curious. None in my area despite us having the highest rates in the country not that long ago!

PrincessNutNuts · 17/05/2021 23:46

@VenusTiger

Why are we so obsessed with variants? They're a tiny deviation.
The "tiny deviation" called B117 the Kent variant has kept us in restrictions for nearly 8 months and killed 80,000 British people because it was more contagious than original covid. .

This is 50-60% more contagious than that.

It's a big deal and we have a very small window to stamp it out now that it's in 86 different locations in the U.K.

Which percentage are we talking about? (And it's not being thick. We're all learning in the time of covid.)

It's only been a month or so, so it's only in 86 areas at the moment. It was 48 not long ago though so we'll have to look again next time there's a new Sanger update. (Every two weeks)

when you hover over the area you want it gives a percentage

PrincessNutNuts · 17/05/2021 23:54

@GabsAlot

If is this percentage thenI think it literally means that 72% of Chelmsford's sequenced cases are the Indian variant B1617.2

(But remember they only sequence a selection)

Curiosity, and just general nosiness for me.

Last one before my bath!

Yeah, that's the percentage of the cases they sent for sequencing that turned out to be that variant.

What does the genomes number mean? What are genomes?!

GreenTeaPingPong · 18/05/2021 00:08

It's odd that Bedford has such a big cluster when London boroughs are much lower. Any ideas why?

Sobeyondthehills · 18/05/2021 00:13

I have the joy of being in an area with nothing. But all the surrounding areas have it.

GabsAlot · 18/05/2021 00:36

thanks again princess appreciate it

PrincessNutNuts · 18/05/2021 00:44

@SunglassesSeventy

It's the genetic make up of the virus. The DNA.

You know they mapped the human genome, and now they know there's a gene for being able to smell asparagus in wee? And we haven't all got it?

Well it's the same for the virus. They've mapped out its DNA.

I think it might to do with there still being a lot of B117, the Kent variant circulating in London.

The Indian Variant hasn't out-competed Kent in London yet, but possibly has in Bedford.

As we open up the more transmissible Indian variant will have the advantage.

There are loads of factors involved I'm sure but that's what I think it boils down to.

damn. It does explain our local surge.
A couple of places I keep an eye on because family live there are having sudden surges too. Great.

@purplehulahoop

Sorry 44.00
I get 4.00 for Coventry.

The B117 Kent variant still looks dominant there.

@MadMadMadamMim

0% in our area.

I'm not stressed about it, to be honest. We've all had Covid and have now also had vaccinations. I appreciate it's a different strain, but I'm assuming my antibodies (which have been checked by blood test) will mean I don't get it, even if it does appear over here.

Fingers crossed.

It's my understanding that you can catch it but previous antibodies will see it off quicker so you won't get as ill.
