So angry at the Government this evening

I’m SO mad. I haven’t been on this board for months and I was feeling really optimistic about life feeling like it was returning to normal.
It is criminal that they have let this variant in. It’s literally ground hog day. Playing politics with public health to do trade deals (because of bloody Brexit) with India.
I know there is hope that the vaccines will do there jobs but we shouldn’t be in this position. This wasn’t inevitable. Arggh so cross

OP posts:

You can have an opinion but it sounds depressing to think so lowly of where you live.

I don't. Where I live specifically is great.

MarshaBradyo · 14/05/2021 22:01

@Thefourbells

I do think it is very telling that, in a discussion about immigration when I have set out the history of my family, people are instead choosing to get defensive regarding my own opinion of the country I've lived in my entire life.

Kind of proves my point tbh.

Not defensive just sounds sad and depressing for you.
kingat · 14/05/2021 22:03

@Dragongirl10

I agree, just close our borders to all unecessary travel and strictly enforce the quarantine of the absolutely essential travellers. How hard can it be?
Pretty hard, you expect a lorry driver to quarantine? Not to use service stations, buy food? Anyway, for the past few months travel has only been permitted for a number of essential reasons.
Doomsdayisstillcoming · 14/05/2021 22:04

@Thefourbells

Have you thought of moving? Doesn’t sound like you like it much

No I haven't, I was born here and my family are here.

I'm allowed to have an opinion on the country I'm a citizen of. Lots of Britain is great. Sadly lots of it is incredibly small minded and unable to look past itself, as this thread demonstrates.

Good luck with that. Pretty sure opinions are going to be banned in the next Queen’s Speech. That and constructive criticism, or any sort of criticism.

Except on Mumsnet. We can all vent here forever, as it’s like shouting into a vacuum, except probably more pointless.

Thefourbells · 14/05/2021 22:04

I'm not sad and depressed. I'd wager I'm a lot less sad or depressed than a lot on this thread, most of whom can't seem to countenance the idea of delaying restrictions for a fortnight until we have conclusive proof that the new variant doesn't evade vaccines. Hey ho.

You sound it tbh

Angry and annoyed at people, relaying all the bad stuff about where you live.

Hey ho

kingat · 14/05/2021 22:07

@Thefourbells

Go on... What do you mean by "close the f*ing borders properly!" ?

No international travellers unless UK citizens or essential workers. Met at airport by airport workers in full PPE, tested, transferred to government quarantine for the full ten days and tested again at the end. No exceptions.

Lol,all these lorry drivers will deffo do that to deliver us some tomatoes.
Sidesaladofchips · 14/05/2021 22:07

Utterly incompetent lying useless government. Just history repeating itself now.

Staffy1 · 14/05/2021 22:08

@thefourbells, yes I do think lots are coming here for the second to none benefits system, and openly admitting it. The rest of Europe is as safe as it is here for a refugee, but many choose to travel through other European countries to get here. I agree, the streets aren't paved with gold here, but many seem to be under the impression they are. Anyway, this wasn't supposed to be about "those evil immigrants". It's about border control in all ways, or not bothering at all.

Thefourbells · 14/05/2021 22:09

Have you seen the other angry and annoyed posts on this thread, or are you picking up on mine because they don't agree with your opinions on this situation?

As it happens, I don't really care. If everything opens back up again that won't affect me, and it everything closes back down again it won't affect me either.

I am merely listening to what the scientists are saying.

lljkk · 14/05/2021 22:09

Is G7 in Cornwall going ahead in June?
Speaking of international travel.

LadyWithLapdog · 14/05/2021 22:09

Here we go again. Let’s dump on the immigrants.

Doomsdayisstillcoming · 14/05/2021 22:10

Weird that Boris waited until today to give us the shit news.

Guess he was busy last week electioneering.

Your list about what you dislike about where you live stood out. Thought you might be happier elsewhere. But up to you as I say.

What are the scientists saying exactly?

Thefourbells · 14/05/2021 22:10

It's about border control in all ways, or not bothering at all.

Actually I don't agree with this. Something is better than nothing.

It's like people who say unless you live off the grid in an eco hut you aren't entitled to speak about the environment.

EssentialHummus · 14/05/2021 22:11

I feel the same OP. I'm not sure if it's a parallel that will chime with anyone else but I immigrated to the UK 12ish years ago, as a student. The rhetoric quickly morphed around that time, to fears of hordes of illegal immigrants overwhelming the UK, claiming benefits rah rah rah. During this time the UK did no exit checks - ie they had no idea who was still in the country at any given time, who had arrived from outside of it. Tbh I'm not even sure if they do exit checks now. Pretty basic thing, no? If you're stressed about your immigration numbers, use a very simple system to at least attempt to understand and manage information.

Now we come to the pandemic. It's non-stop talk about variants and quarantine, and has been for months. If you arrive to, say, Australia or Israel, quarantine means being taken from your flight to a designated bus and then hotel and staying there until the quarantine period is up. In the UK? Arrive, go through security on your own, and make your own way to wherever you fancy quarantining - feel free to lick the Tube on your way through London, why not - and then quarantine, or not, because let's be honest the chance of anyone checking up on you is pretty minimal. Oh, and we'll be sure to spend an extra few weeks dithering over whether country x represents a threat despite plague-like conditions being reported on international media, give people a good chance to get over here if they'd like.

If overseas variants are seen as a threat/potential threat, let's treat them accordingly.

Useless fuckers.

It does. I see it a lot on mn.
Thefourbells · 14/05/2021 22:12

What are the scientists saying exactly?

That opening up should either be delayed or done cautiously until we have firm evidence this variant does not evade vaccines.

That international travellers (essential ones) should be quarantined OR tested (lorry drivers, for those of you who keep wanging on about lorry drivers)

That masks should remain in schools

That international holidays should not be allowed to take place at the current time.

Hellcatspangle · 14/05/2021 22:13

You can't blame the government for a public who won't make the right choices and think the rules don't apply to them.

Bollox. They've been incompetent from the get go.

Can you link to this?

Which scientists are saying this. Government advisors?

Yep, I'd agree. I think a lot of people should step away from mn as it clearly is making them feel bad.
Thefourbells · 14/05/2021 22:14

The UK government doesn't give a single solitary fuck about illegal immigrants, it is simply used to appeal to voters who want to blame everyone else for their own problems.

MarshaBradyo · 14/05/2021 22:14

Sonnet cough I think you can talk you’ve been railing fairly consistently Grin

SonnetForSpring · 14/05/2021 22:15

Marsha, we had this discussion earlier. Independent sage and now sage. Hence the press conference.
