I’m SO mad. I haven’t been on this board for months and I was feeling really optimistic about life feeling like it was returning to normal.
It is criminal that they have let this variant in. It’s literally ground hog day. Playing politics with public health to do trade deals (because of bloody Brexit) with India.
I know there is hope that the vaccines will do there jobs but we shouldn’t be in this position. This wasn’t inevitable. Arggh so cross

Personal responsibility and lockdown are the antithesis to each other though.

And im talking about blame. You were a "good" person if you caught HIV via a blood transfusion but a "bad" person if you caught it through sex.
Same as now.................you are a "good" person if you caught Covid during your job in the NHS but a "bad" person if you caught Covid as a member of the public cos you must have broken the rules.

There was a NHS worker on ITV News back in January who said there were so many Covid patients because they were rule breakers. She hadnt time travelled from the mid 80s but she may as well have done. The attitudes from some of the blue tick medics on Twitter has been the same. If their motive is to cause resentment towards the NHS.............its working.

Today 09:15 Thefourbells

Do all the people saying "oh but there won't be any serious illness now the vulnerable have been vaccinated so does it matter if cases spread" genuinely think they know better than a group of scientists working at the highest level confused

I find it baffling.“

It’s not just “the vulnerable” who have been vaccinated. They are calling 30 year olds where we are (in the NW).
Yes, infection rates are rising but serious cases and hospitalisation aren’t, so the vaccine programme IS doing all we had hoped for and more.
My CEV husband and I, worst still our youngest who still lives at home, spent the past year shielding in strict lockdown, we followed every rule and will do so as long as they are required.
The balance has tipped now though . We owe younger people so much for all they’ve given up. Businesses can’t carry on with this stop/start regime , lives and livelihoods are at risk. Nearly half a million people have been waiting for over a year for their surgeries. Half a million, many in agony and distress every single day. Those surgeries will take years to catch up with.

Every scientist I have heard speaking on the Today Programme, Newsnight etc. has confirmed that hospitalisations are not increasing because of the India variant and that it is likely that whilst the vaccine may be less efficacious against new strains, they believe in the evidence they have seen so far that they will offer good protection. Of course, we need data but that will be available within weeks. New vaccines are being worked on now and will be available by autumn, possibly to be delivered with the annual ‘flu vaccines.

The balance has shifted and the economy, livelihoods and the well being of our young people are far more at risk now than the NHS and the population is from Covid. Those who are still vulnerable to more aggressively transmitted strains because they have chosen not to be vaccinated must come to terms with the consequences of their choice and not expect others to take up the slack.
I am very sympathetic to those who are unable to take vaccines but again, the majority can’t be expected to live severely restricted lives forever because of that.
(My husband has a life threatening genetic condition, it can be set of by any infection, he is allergic to the ‘flu jab so every winter we hunker down and keep away from people, no-one’s fault, that’s life).

Pinkcadillac · 15/05/2021 19:50

Sorry, made a mistake there. Spain isn't on the 'red zone' list

I know two people who cant and they dont expect you to. They are fucking fed up with it being assumed that they do expect this and they are also fed up with being used for emotional blackmail .

Livelovebehappy · 15/05/2021 19:54

I think one definite to come out of this covid situation is that there are a lot of idiots amongst us. The government can’t be responsible for the actions of the public if they don’t follow simple rules and advice. I’ve seen local shops and supermarkets, as well as NHS staff have to put up with frequent verbal abuse when they challenge people disregarding the rules.

Egghead81 · 15/05/2021 20:41

Well, you carried on using hairspray and deodorant because these are now CFC free.
Not at the time.

HipTightOnions · 15/05/2021 20:48

Boris has said that he will reduce the gap between first and second jabs for over 50s from 12 weeks to 8 weeks. This is just a lie.

I got my second jab at a walk-in clinic today. Anyone over 50 who had jab #1 at least 8 weeks ago was welcome.

Absolutely this. Let's judge who is 'bad' and who is 'good' from how they caught it (like they know for sure). Burning at the stake for the naughty lot.
MmeLaraque · 15/05/2021 20:58

@Xenia We have about 17m more people in the UK than when I was born (I preferred it with 17m fewer) and we have over those decades chosen to be an open nation and London like New York is a travel hub and people come and go all the time. I would not be against changing that and nor would environmentalists. I never had a night away from home until I was 10 and that did me no harm. However we are where we are and people have relatives from all over the world to a much greater extent than when I was born and will want to come and go.

Brexit gave you what you yearned for. People who've made their homes here are forced to apply for residency, which means that they have to apply to stay in the homes they paid for, with families they raised here. Doesn't matter how long they've been here. They have to apply. They also have to pay (usually thousands of pounds each person, not just each family) to apply. The application can be rejected. So well done you. You got what you wanted, at the expense of thousands of other people.

Your post is such an insular load of tripe.

VenusTiger · 15/05/2021 20:59

I wish ppl would go and learn what a variant is.
FFS!

Iseestupidpeople · 15/05/2021 21:05

Not surprising they once again don’t act in time. After all the PM has a CCJ only in the UK would this be possible. A county court judgment for not paying for stuff, doesn’t shout here bribe me I’m as corrupt as can be, does it?!

MmeLaraque · 15/05/2021 21:09

I'm over 50. So is DH. Our second jabs are for 3-4 weeks from now. 12 weeks apart. 8 weeks apart would mean this weekend. Nope. Johnson lied about that, too. Is there anything he didn't lie about?

FunnyWonder · 15/05/2021 21:10

@Egghead81
So you were still using aerosols containing CFCs, even though they were banned and therefore unavailable? Aye, alright.

Zoolife101 · 15/05/2021 21:11

And yet people keep voting them in.....
Even after he's killed off half his own voters.

Mandalay246 · 15/05/2021 21:13

People in red countries are flying to turkey etc to be able to get flights back - I know this for a fact , but let’s blame the government , of course it’s their fault , I doubt that any other government could have done any better - this is a once in a lifetime situation, everyone is still learning.

And yet clearly some governments (in other countries) have done better!

Ontheblink · 15/05/2021 21:17

Very very angry about this too. They dilly dally around variants before doing anything, it is so frustrating. Why wasn’t india on the red list much earlier? Because they always always wait till the damage is done.

Egghead81 · 15/05/2021 21:24
@Egghead81

No!

Ok so there was a massive thing about using aerosols and the ozone. Yes?
The removal of CFC didn’t happen over night.
It was a campaign that took ages.
And during that time.... I carried on despite the “omg we are all going to burn to death because of the ozone hole. It’s too late. It’s ruined forever!”

Then they removed CFC and I carried on.

Didn’t stop me either way.

Same with air travel. I hear all how we shouldn’t go on our annual holiday. And I shrug and every year - I book a beautiful holiday abroad.

AmongUs · 15/05/2021 22:18

I can’t believe a red flag didn’t go up for the government scientists after seeing scenes in India and in the absence of information they should have been way more cautious without delay rather than other way round. With all they know so far about covid and like those initial scenes coming out of China, they acted like they didn’t have a clue.

Plus the trade deal was going on, that may have had something to do with it too as why was Pakistan put on the red list but India left out.

Maybe they wanted the variant here so they could study it first hand. Maybe needed to develop future vaccine tweaks. We don’t seem to be following a zero covid policy. I don’t think they will properly try and keep out any variant. I would say Australia is trying it’s upmost to keep covid and all its associated variants out.
Each government does as it sees fit.

Doomsdayisstillcoming · 15/05/2021 22:23

Wow what a fucking mis-step by the govt that is.

Blatantly allowing as many first doses as possible in areas with high covid rates is the right strategy.

But an over 50 in Cornwall with a rate of literally fuck all covid/100,000 people can get a second dose early?

Running out of words to describe their incompetence.

Kendodd · 15/05/2021 22:37

As an aside, does anybody else think Boris Johnson has some sort of speech impediment?

I was listening to him the other day compared to the other politicians in the HoC, he just doesn't get his words out properly and fluidly at all. Thinking back, he never has. Its really noticeable during prime ministers questions. And I don't mean what he's saying or his lying, I mean his inability to get his words out easily.

rossclare · 15/05/2021 22:39

If you are high risk then why haven't you been offered a jab?

rossclare · 15/05/2021 22:41

So what if he does have a speech impediment? What has that got to do with anything?

MsTSwift · 15/05/2021 22:43

I thought Xenia was a poster with 5 children?! Seems odd to complain about overcrowding! Happy to be corrected
