It look like. It’s finally the end of this and everyone will be getting back to normal.

OP posts:
@CarrieAntoinette how is it preventable ? Unless you mean continue to lockdown for many months , lockdown is not attainable for years you know
Australia, New Zealand, East Asia, and Africa have shown how it's preventable.

Border restrictions. Proper quarantine. Good test and trace. And then fully vaccinate the majority.

vera99 · 06/05/2021 23:00

I use the nifty bypass paywalls add on to chrome which does what it says.

Here's the BBC on the same story.
@CarrieAntoinette Your the one who is negative and yet again you fail to say what you want them to do
Have a look at worldometer and you will see lots of countries have suffered and very few haven't , some have fared better and some have fared worse
Suppress the virus.

Stop the next wave.

That's what I want them to do.

worriedatthemoment · 06/05/2021 23:01

@CarrieAntoinette how ?
They are just words

Tealightsandd · 06/05/2021 23:02

New treatments are coming too. So it's all just a matter of time. When Australia and New Zealand and others open up properly, it will be with a well vaccinated population - and by then the new treatments will be available as well.

worriedatthemoment · 06/05/2021 23:02

@Tealightsandd we are not nz or australia and that has its own issues
And we are way passed that

Border control with real quarantine (this is the key). Good test and trace. Get majority fully vaccinated (we're on our way so it's not an impossible far off task).

sleepwouldbenice · 06/05/2021 23:04

@CarrieAntoinette

Although I really wouldnt throw caution to the wind and share your scepticism that Boris can ever be trusted to get it right..... you are being over cautious. A rocky road ahead rather than a smooth path to full life I would agree with

But for example we are getting close to herd immunity - please take a look here: covid.joinzoe.com/post/is-the-uk-close-to-herd-immunity
and yes variants are an issue but the whole point of the 3rd vaccine is to boost immunity and to pick up dealing with variants that they can at this stage. In an odd way something to be celebrated that we can react so fast before the autumn puts pressure on infection rates again

RedAzalea · 06/05/2021 23:04

just reading on other threads about the Indian variant and how it can /will affect the UK

changed my mind.....think we will be hit again

worriedatthemoment · 06/05/2021 23:05

@Tealightsandd depends no one knows or they could have cases as look at the link vera has provided
But comparing the uk to NZ or australia is crazy, both vast countries and miles away from other countries
And not all of africa has under control at all
We are most comparable to europe in every way

Tealightsandd · 06/05/2021 23:05

That's what was said in summer and again during the winter lockdown. Deja vu.

Well word are the only way I know to communicate, but please see attached pic from the other thread cos I cba to keep typing the same words.

Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea.
Densely populated. Next to other countries.

worriedatthemoment · 06/05/2021 23:07

@Tealightsandd there your words not carrie
Tbh I am leaving these threads as not good for my mh and that isa bigger risk to me than covid in all honesty
Im not stupid and know Other waves are possible and variants etc , but the pure negativity from some just gets me down, another few months locked in and away is not doable for a lot oF us now

worriedatthemoment · 06/05/2021 23:08

@CarrieAntoinette of which most we are doing ffs ,

Tealightsandd · 06/05/2021 23:09

Why fall at the last hurdle? We're doing well with vaccinations. New treatments are being developed. Temporary border control would be worth it but the government has clearly prioritised international travel above lives, health, the NHS (including the staff), and businesses. They will continue to do so. Which is a shame.

tobee · 06/05/2021 23:09

The boosters are not 100% nailed on necessity yet.

I'm also optimistic about treatments which rarely get mentioned. Bridesmaid to the vaccines. Studies have been going on into treatments for as long as Covid has been recognised.

worriedatthemoment · 06/05/2021 23:10

Like I said leaving the thread as the negativity is more damaging for me and the comparisons to countries so very different to us has been done time and time again

tobee · 06/05/2021 23:11

The school outbreak in Derbyshire is like manna from heaven for some mumsnetters. Just when they were getting all despondent about the good news. Hmm

Tealightsandd · 06/05/2021 23:14

If we had border control, we wouldn't need to be locked away. We never needed it. Not long term, like we did.

Still, it's unlikely the government will change approach now. International travel above all else for them. Fingers crossed the vaccine rollout will help us avoid a third wave. It might well do (we just have to hope the border weak point doesn't impact too much). I'm sorry you're struggling worried I had a day or two off these threads. Only because I was busy but it's no bad thing to take a break.

bunnytheegghunter · 06/05/2021 23:17

I'm not entirely sure tbh, I've seen lots of stuff about this India variant taking hold here and it's taking off orrery quickly.

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 06/05/2021 23:22

In all honesty I think we will have another lockdown in the autumn. I don't think this is the end of it. I see this going on until at least 2022 sadly

I can't be arsed to read that because I don't find them a trusted source of information.

We're in lockdown. So things may well look good on some level to someone there - or it might be ideologically motivated bullshit. Either way I no longer bother with them.

Herd immunity is not a fixed point.

The % that need to be vaccinated to reach the herd immunity threshold depends on the R which depends on what level of restrictions are currently imposed.

So if you loosen restrictions and raise the R the % of the population that needs to be vaccinated in order to reach herd immunity goes up.

So we have to aim high so that we can safely open up.

Israel are aiming for 90%

Here's where we are:

Is this really the end
tobee · 06/05/2021 23:25

We're not in lockdown

Tealightsandd · 06/05/2021 23:30

@tobee

We're not in lockdown
The UK never really has been. Not with the lack of border restrictions. More accurately, we, the majority of the public, were in lockdown. The international travellers weren't.
