Is this really the end

It look like. It’s finally the end of this and everyone will be getting back to normal.

OP posts:

I don't think it's the end of covid, but I do think it's the end of harsh restrictions in the UK. We will need to be careful for some time with testing and monitoring for varients and outbreaks, but overall we will largely go ahead with life pretty much as normal from June onwards.

Always the same misery from same posters. Wise incognito will be along soon with more doom ...

Baseless optimism buttered no parsnips last year, and it still doesn't.

Given the choice between the comforting lies of "3 week lockdown" "break the back of the beast in 12 weeks" "normality by Christmas" "nightclubbing in June" or reality, I'll always choose reality.

What about the government picking a date in June ended the pandemic exactly?

Bordois · 06/05/2021 16:12

As if by magic... 🤣

There’s a very significant difference between now and last year incase it escaped your notice. Hmm

Topseyt · 06/05/2021 16:16

I certainly hope it is at least the beginning of the end.

I do enjoy being able to get out occasionally and mooch around a town or city centre without it feeling and looking like a ghost town. I’ve enjoyed the odd coffee with a friend even if we did have to sit outside (it was a nice day, thankfully).

There’s a much happier feeling around despite the doom mongers on here.

GoldenOmber · 06/05/2021 16:19

Q) What's better now than the autumn/winter of 2020/21 where the peak was allowed to build so large that 80,000 British people died, and most of us were in restrictions most of the time?

A) 23.8% of the U.K. population I has had two doses of vaccine. 52.1% have had the first dose.

Well, yes? That’s a fairly big improvement, that makes things very substantially better than pre-November 2020 no matter what else you stick in the ‘worse’ column.

Why do you feel ‘pandemic fatigue’ somehow balances this out? “On the one hand, we have this near-miraculous scientific breakthrough of multiple highly effective vaccines, already being rolled out at considerable pace - but on the other hand, people are a bit fed up of restrictions now so it’s all a bit swings and roundabouts.”

Yeah, plus optimism in the vaccines turned out to be fairly well placed, didn’t it?

“There won’t be a vaccine for several years at the earliest, I’m afraid” has turned to “okay there will, but it’s unlikely to be highly effective, sorry” to “okay it’s highly effective but we’ll cock up the rollout” to “okay, we have rapidly developed highly effective vaccines and been very successful in rolling them out, but it’s still all going to end in tears somehow, I just know it!”

IcedPurple · 06/05/2021 16:23

I think that testing, vaccines, increased hygiene, and possibly masks and social distancing will be needed for a while.

If social distancing goes on much longer, thousands of businesses will not survive. Whole industries - entertainment, the arts, hospitality, transport, tourism, hairdressing, lesiure - simply cannot operate profitably with SD in place.

And why would it be needed if the vaccines work, as it very much appears they do?

IcedPurple · 06/05/2021 16:24

I really do think there are quite a few people on MN who are bitterly disappointed that the vaccine roll-out has been an almost unmitigated success. They'll deny it, but they do exist.

We are nearly through it and if it’s not let’s have a fucking ball whilst we can.

Always followed by ‘I’m afraid’ despite being typed out with glee

RedcurrantPuff · 06/05/2021 16:34

It looks pretty good BUT I wish the government would just say no to foreign holidays for a good few months longer. I’m worried we will get so near the finish line and they’ll fuck it up.

Or “believe me”/“Mark my words”.

This is what I want to do. The fatigue has kicked in and I want to kick it out by going to a huge underground rave for 3 days. I’d take a dinner out if that’s not available.

It’s only the end when we all stop complying The more we comply the longer it lasts.
ilovesooty · 06/05/2021 16:41

The acute phase thankfully seems to be almost over and everyday life will gradually feel more normal which will be very welcome.

The fallout from it will unfortunately be with us for a very long time, economically and socially.

Sillysop92 · 06/05/2021 16:41

I know, I’ve got theatre tickets booked , a holiday to France (going if I can ), a musical event plus a party and meals out already planned. I’ve had Covid I’ll soon be doubled vaccinated so low risk, so I’m off out there!

Perhaps you missed my earlier post....?

It's only a few back. I'd assumed you were replying to it when you tagged me just after it.

You'll need to quote where I said any of that if you want me to respond to it.

And as if they had some special authority or expertise, when they're just random MNers like the rest of us. Why are you 'afraid'? Your opinion is no more or less relevant than anyone else's here.

No. Have you seen what's happening in Derbyshire right now?

A major outbreak in school.
