I really don’t want my second jab

I’m due to go and get my second Oxford jab on Saturday and I really don’t want it. I’m 30 and have been put off getting it 😩 work is really pushing me to have it. Not sure what to do :(

OP posts:
RosieRoww · 28/04/2021 12:29

Your body- your decision- no one else can command you what to do.

TheWhalrus · 28/04/2021 12:35

I think you should have the second jab.

The blood clot risk is mediated by a certain antibody that a very small percentage of people have. Therefore, if you didn't have blood clots the first time, there is no risk of blood clots the second time, so you might as well have the jab and benefit from better protection from COVID.

Imissmoominmama · 28/04/2021 12:41

I had my second AZ jab yesterday OP. The signs of a blood clot will be fully explained to you, but it is stressed that it is extremely rare.

I felt like I’d been hit by a bus after the first vaccine, but other than I slight headache, have been absolutely fine since this one.

I didn’t want to go for it either- now I’m just relieved.

But ultimately, it’s your decision- don’t let anyone bully you into it.

Totalbeach · 28/04/2021 12:42

Honestly the massive cries for censorship of ‘wrong think’ on here do more to put me off having my second vaccine than the anxious posters (or even anti vax posts). I find the ‘just roll up your sleeve and be grateful you’re not in India’ mentality unhelpful at best.

People like me had this vaccine at a time when they were told that we knew a certain set of facts about it. After it was injected into us, the story changed and new information emerged. The scientists didn’t know it would happen and at first we’re sure it wasn’t connected. Now they admit it must be connected but they don’t know why. The risk ratio keeps getting revised. Does anyone really not see how that could be unsettling? What else don’t they know?

My personal feeling is that at the moment they probably just don’t know everything they need to know to let me make an informed decision.

And it’s still moving. At first it was all after first doses. Now there’s one after a second dose. As more second doses get rolled out what will the updated position be? I am struggling to make a decision that weighs up the evidence as the evidence is still emerging. I don’t want to be part of the ‘evidence gathering’ phase of the vaccine. I didn’t volunteer for the trials.

Totalbeach · 28/04/2021 12:44

Also, do people really think that the thing that will make people hesitant is reading about other people on Mumsnet being hesitant? And not the knowledge that in almost every other country in the world that vaccine is no longer being used in their age group (even in the face of a third wave) or in quite a few cases not being used at all?

Stepawayfromdrgoogle · 28/04/2021 12:44

@MrsKeats

These threads need to be zapped.
People need to be able to discuss concerns about the vaccination process. All of my vaccinations and those of my DC are up to date so I’m not ant-vax
PurplePumpkinDream · 28/04/2021 12:46

If you don’t want it you don’t have to have it as it’s not compulsory at the moment. It might become essential for some jobs, travelling, admission to some places etc. This is just the mundane reasons. Not sure whether it’s possible/advisable to have a different vaccine at this stage.

99victoria · 28/04/2021 12:48

OP - If you don't want it, don't have it. Fine. Most of us probably don't have an opinion one way or another about whether you have it.

It certainly doesn't need an eleventy-millionth thread discussing it!

SpnBaby1967 · 28/04/2021 12:48

ALL the blood clot events have been on the first jab.

Just have your jab and get on with your day.

poppycat10 · 28/04/2021 12:56

@Thedarksideofthemoon30

Blood clots I think. I was fine the first time :(
They can be treated now. And the risk is miniscule anyway.

Go and get the jab. If you are 30 you obviously need it for your work.

mimbleandlittlemy · 28/04/2021 13:08

GP friend of mine says you have statistically more risk of dying from falling down the stairs in your own home than from getting a blood clot from AZ - which is quite a useful perspective I think. Though it might make you immediately want to go and live in a bungalow of course.

Tal45 · 28/04/2021 13:27

My advice would be to get the jab, there are probably hundreds of things you'd do without even thinking about it that are as risky if not riskier. You've had the first one and been fine so why should the second be any different.

Emma2021 · 28/04/2021 13:32

I prefer to listen to Professor Chris Witty et al than someone going on about their own anonymous 'research' on here. Seriously, if 33 million people are given a vaccination at pretty much the same time then of course you will get a few people who react badly. It's miniscule the risk compared to the disease. I refer you back to India...

or as the Queen quite rightly said a few months ago, get it done to protect everyone not just yourself.

That is a fair point but can we trust them as they are not in control number 10 is. You've seen how the pm and his gang hold back, dither, delay and most recent exmaple is the quaratine for those coming, returning from India a long list of mistakes IMO

Below a link, read and you will note many more people want to know what is happening but most do accept that vaccines is the way out but we need info right now as it stands

Rainbowsandstorms · 28/04/2021 13:47

@Totalbeach as someone in the same boat as you I couldn’t have put it better myself. It’s an ever changing situation and the risk ratio is constantly being revised, as we start to vaccinate younger groups. I find it insulting that it’s assumed anyone who is concerned is incapable of processing the available facts. I also feel that many people are over looking that the most recent rate is now 7.9 in a million up from 4.9 in a million. Personally I’d like to see if this increases further now we are vaccinating younger people and I’m keen to monitor the situation re second doses.

@SpnBaby1967 there has now been one after a second jab, it’s an ever changing situation. The stats are published weekly by the government. www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-vaccine-adverse-reactions/coronavirus-vaccine-summary-of-yellow-card-reporting

OP when is your second dose due? I’m in my 30s and had my first 4.5 weeks ago. I agree it’s so difficult to weigh up especially as all of us are having it are forming part of the trial. I have another 6 weeks until my second dose is due and I’m keen to monitor the stats during that time. Please fact check this but I read that the first dose provides protection for 16 plus weeks, I’m sorry I didn’t save the link so please do your own research but if that’s correct it may buy you some time, though obviously the second dose boosts the protection provided by the first. Depending on if I feel like I have enough information to make an informed decision by the time mine is due, I will consider postponing it for an extra few weeks. Lots of second doses are now being given so I think risk associated with second doses will soon be much clearer. I think the next gov report on the yellow card stats is due out tomorrow and that is broken down into clots associated with the first dose and the second dose. So far there has only been one associated with the second dose which is hopefully good news for those of us due the second. As with so many risks it’s a decision only you can make but it’s always helpful to have enough facts to feel like you can make an informed choice.

ImTheWolfToday · 28/04/2021 13:59

The scientific and medical advice on this is absolutely clear, on a balance of risks the best option for you and those around you is to have your second jab.
Of course you are entitled to make whatever decision you like, but for me the basic facts are very very clear and I am happy to trust the experts.

Anon778833 · 28/04/2021 14:01

I’ve got my second one in a few weeks. I’m still going to have it.

Doesn’t Covid itself give more risk of blood clots anyway?

Cas112 · 28/04/2021 14:49

If you don't want it OP, don't have it and do not let anyone make you feel guilty about it. Choices are your own and no one else's.

Im in same position although in my 40's so risk of covid probably higher
I will prob have second jab but am keeping an eye on the data and will be keeping an eye on any symptoms after 2nd jab and will present myself straight to a & e if I have any concerns
I feel I should have the second to at least complete this part, but if we need further jabs will be looking much more closely and weighing up
The risk may be small but its understandable people are concerned

worriedatthemoment · 28/04/2021 15:51

@Covywovy thats really helpful its just purely your opinion most of it

BiggerBoat1 · 28/04/2021 15:53

Don't have it then. Plenty of people grateful to get your dose.

StressMagnet · 28/04/2021 16:00

Hmm there has never been any side effects to any medication ever OP. Look at the pill for example. Everyone should be forced to have every vaccine or be shot in head. If you dont like that then you should be imprisoned for saying so on a public forum.

Meanwhile, back on earth....

I'm not anti vax as I have the privilege of a Biology degree so able to look and understand data. OP the risks are minimal but if your not happy with that risk it's your choice to make. Dont let some aggressive dick on a website dictate how you should feel.

This site is so fucking toxic

I’ve got my second one in a few weeks. I’m still going to have it.

Doesn’t Covid itself give more risk of blood clots anyway?

Yes. My friend has long covid and that has caused blood clots on the lungs.

Don't be such a twonk!!!!

My mum died of blood clots on the lung BECAUSE SHE CAUGHT COVID.

She didn't even get the opportunity to get the jab.

Read up on the stats and evidence.

You are more likely to have a blood clot from taking the contraceptive pill for Christ sake or flying

MintMatchmaker · 28/04/2021 16:20

@SimpleWayOfLife

It really worries me that people are being put off having this vaccine by social media/tabloid drivel rather than actually looking at the real facts in a sensible way.
This!
