How long before the UK become India

The scenes coming from India right now are petrifying.

Takes me back to the scenes from Italy last year.

My question, how long do you think we have until we are seeing similar scenes here.
Do we need to be prepared for this?

I read yesterday that scientists are urging the government to ensure all restrictions are over with after June

Yes I read similar. Tbh though from what I read what they stated is broadly in line with the current plan anyway so I’m not entirely sure why it’s made the news other than to back up what’s already happening?

noblegiraffe · 25/04/2021 11:56

Which to me sounds like a dates not data approach and doesn’t sound particularly scientific. Of course you can always find ‘scientists’ to agree with any particular agenda so more info about who these scientists are would be informative.

BusLaneLady · 25/04/2021 12:16

No we will never be like India unless we have a population over 1 billion. India has 25,000 deaths per day at normal times. They don't have the test and trace, the accelerated vaccination programme, any basic healthcare for the majority of the population, no sanitation, bad air pollution and other illnesses that entails because of the factors I've just mentioned. This is the same for Brazil. Covid right now in India is crumbling them because of these factors, not because it's sweeping through the air and it's airborne where it kills people as soon as people breathe it like in films. The best thing the world could do right now for them is send vaccines and help out with the vaccination programme through volunteers etc but the world is busy with their plates full with their own vaccination programme. It's really distressing to read and watch because this was going to happen and hit countries like India and Brazil who have fragile infrastructures. Even countries like the UK have shit infrastructures but we are lucky because we have 68 million population, clean water and we stuck to the rules and most importantly, we have been very good with our vaccination programme!

It was tiny minority fringe. All 22 of them. The vast vast majority of scientists completely disagree with them.
HelloMissus · 25/04/2021 12:36

India are in the situation they are because

 • the majority of their huge population is unvaccinated.
 • there are very few restrictions or social distancing (mass events are being encouraged).
 • the majority of government hospitals (of which there are actually plenty) have no drugs/oxygen/ICU/PPE
 • the beds in private hospitals are currently being used by many patients who are not critical (just in case they become so.
 • as a country there health is generally poor.

Does anyone really think only 185,000 people have died of Covid in India? When nearly 130,00 have died in the UK.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/04/2021 12:56

Personally I'd say that's highly unlikely, not least because a number of deaths will probably never be registered

Sadly, there'll be some who live and die without the authorities ever having been aware they existed

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/04/2021 12:58

Good grief; if this is reliable, it's even higher than I thought Sad

BunsyGirl · 25/04/2021 13:11

You only have to look at the difference between excess deaths and Covid deaths for other countries to understand that the official death rate in India is unlikely to be accurate: www.economist.com/graphic-detail/coronavirus-excess-deaths-tracker

Russia and Mexico are particularly bad.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 25/04/2021 13:17

It’s really interesting how little people in general understand about India and it’s very poor infrastructure. I had a conversation with a senior manager in a finance company yesterday who is absolutely cacking their pants because they outsourced jobs there.

Baileysforchristmas · 25/04/2021 14:36

They say it’s 10 times that amount so would be 1.8 million?

SpnBaby1967 · 25/04/2021 16:27

The OPs post perfectly demonstrated that our biggest issue will always be peoples inability to understand the information in front of them.

India is HUGE, the UK isnt.
India has extreme levels of poverty, the UK doesnt
India has one of the lowest bed to resident ratio of any nation, the UK doesnt
India is very slow on the vaccine rollout, the UK isnt
India lockdowns will directly lead to huge levels of people dying from starvation, the UK hasnt
India has an abundance of multicultural households, the UK doesnt
India has a 2 tier medical system, the UK doesnt.

Understand yet OP? Hmm

Method · 25/04/2021 16:28

It was like Italy here last year at the top of the pandemic. Now half of the population is vaccinated, we hopefully shouldn't see anything like that and certainly not like India. Their population density is much higher.

Againstmachine · 25/04/2021 16:45

People misunderstand how big India is it's a huge country With about 20 times amount of people here., It has vast differences from place to place and the pretty racist caste system doesn't help.

Baileysforchristmas · 25/04/2021 17:32

1.2 billion people is twice the size of the whole Europe’s population, 800 million in extreme poverty which is more than the whole of Europe, why people want to compare the UK to India is beyond me 🙄

Waxonwaxoff0 · 25/04/2021 17:39

The UK won't become like India. Simple as that.

You're being rediculous. I'm familiar with India as I have relatives there. The UK and India are completely different countries. Therefore have will have totally different pandemic profiles. It's a bit embarrassingly scare mongering of you to post this.
MrsHastingslikethebattle · 25/04/2021 20:43

@bumbleymummy

Oh for goodness sake. Why on Earth would we be anything like India? Honestly, some people just seem to want something to worry about.
Yep!

India is a third world country with a shit health system and not even close to having a significant amount of people vaccinated...

Why the fuck would UK be like this when half of our population are vaccinated?!

Scarletbutnotohara · 25/04/2021 20:57

I have relatives in Delhi, so I’m very worried for them right now. As for us, I don’t think we will see anything like it on that scale. But at the same time, I do worry that our cases will rise and another lockdown is imminent. Seeing the footage of the protests in London yesterday and then seeing the footage of India... I still have no idea why protests are even happening here. Crowds of 10,000 will be to blame if we end up with another wave!!

But there have been protests ever since the pandemic began - many for BLM last year and they never caused an increase in cases.
@daisychain01

The OP deliberately worded their Title as click- bait and to wind people up, and many people including me saw through it from the start. It's obvious they have nothing else better to do with their time. Poor them.

Oh for goodness sake.

I’m reporting this to MN. This is just nothing other than intimidation!!
It isn't intimidation when there is a majority view on here that your thread title and content is scare mongering.

It's called "reading the room" OP.

In a global pandemic. Be responsible.

JanuaryJonez · 26/04/2021 00:34

I've managed to read about two thirds of this thread and I'm convinced the OP may have a point.

How do we know that the Indian variant isn't more contagious and more deadly (and is already here in the UK)?

I'm quite surprised at all the optimism on here!

Despite the quote that I posted from a scientist who said that we will not see scenes like those in India here?

Despite the fact the issues in India are apparently seemingly caused by the Kent variant?

Nothing to do with optimism and everything to do with actually trying to find out what’s going on before scaremongering

Outside crowds and mixing didn’t cause a wave last year.
